The Imaginarium of Doctor Gilliam

Terry Gilliam's latest film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a work of art. It is probably a masterpiece but it's too early to say. Movie critics see it somewhat differently because, as a result of their job description, they are judging it by the wrong criteria. Gilliam's film is like a rose entered in a competition for vegetables: it's never going to win 'best in show' but that doesn't mean it isn't a pretty good rose.
The word 'masterpiece' is generally associated with great paintings or great pieces of music and, occasionally, great works of fiction. Motion pictures, the product of collaborators and the result of compromise, don't generally qualify for the epithet, even if they are called Citizen Kane, On the Waterfront or Battleship Potemkin. There are many truly great movies which

Director Spike Lee recently talked to IGN about some of his rumored/announced upcoming projects. Here's the rundown from the man himself:Inside Man 2Spike Lee: Waiting on Universal Pictures. They have the script. They have the budget and we'll see if they wanna make it. Denzel's ready. Clive Owen's ready. I'm ready. Jodie's ready. Everyone's ready. It's like, "Coach, put us in!" Save Us, Joe Louis [biopic] Spike Lee: I've been unable to get the financing. What's really sad about that is that I had made a promise to the late great Budd Schulberg that we'd get it done and Budd passed recently. He was 95. Budd being, of course, the screenwriter of On the Waterfront and the novelist of What Makes Sammy Run. Great, great, great, great writer. James Brown biopic Spike Lee: Financing. I had the all-time biopic trilogy: Jackie Robinson, Joe Louis and James Brown.

The Birthday Boys and Girls of 11/11
1821 Fyodor Dostoevsky, legendary Russian author of Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov fame. So many movies inspired by his work. But he's not the legendary Russian author that'll be getting all the press this next couple of months. That'd be Leo Tolstoy, soon to be chattered about when The Last Station emerges as an Oscar contender.
1887 Roland Young, popular 30s and 40s character actor (Topper, The Philadelphia Story, Ruggles of Red Gap)
1898 René Clair, (pictured left), wonderful French writer/director. If you've never seen Le Million I urge you to rent it maintenant. His Oscar nominated films include The Gates of Paris (1957) and À nous la liberté (1931)
1899 Pat O'Brien --Ewwww, not that one people -- the actor! whose film career stretches alllllll the way from the 1931 classic The Front Page to 1981's Ragtime.
1901 Sam Spiegel, powerful producer. Boy was he on fire in

Yesterday I sat down once again to watch Martin Scorsese’s 1980 masterpiece Raging Bull, taking my viewings somewhere into double figures. I consider it to be the director’s finest film (just edging out Mean Streets), and De Niro’s titular Bull, Jake Lamotta, the actor’s premier performance. It is a film that exercises an extraordinary hold, drawing me in time and again in search of new meaning. And it never fails to deliver. But as the credits role I always ask myself the same question: “Why does the film industry have such an abiding love affair with the sweet science?” Like a punch-drunk journeyman surviving on a mix of experience, gut instinct and crude reflex, the fight film, despite its often indelicate and rough-edged familiarity, continues to bewitch filmmakers and confound audiences with an Ali-esque dexterity.

Watch This: The Golden Age of Video

I have an odd fascination with fan made videos. I don't care if it's a 12 year old who got his hands on a copy of Adobe Premiere or a grown man who edits together fan made trailers for films that never existed (I love me some Raiders of the Lost Ark 1951 or Ghostbusters 1954), if someone spends enough time to put together a video born out of their passion for film, chances are I'm probably going to watch it at least once. Now, if you happen to edit together a music video for a catchy song comprised of film quotes, well, I'm probably going to play it on a loop for at least half an hour.
That is exactly what I've been doing with the below music video for Ricardo Autobahn's "The Golden Age of Video". Ricardo's own site describes it as "an epic production constructed of disco beats and

'Raging Bull' ... With Hot Chicks

I'm almost positive this post will elicit comments like "Way to go Cinematical -- I'm never coming back here again!", or "If I wanted to watch this type of filth, I'd take a shower in front of the mirror!" -- but there's just something sorta mesmerizing and moronic about these videos that I just had to write about them. Essentially, the folks from Secret Sauce TV came up with a concept called Hot Chicks in Black & White Flicks.
The idea here is that these black and white films are instantly more watchable when they feature hot girls in bikinis reciting the dialogue instead of, say, trained professional actors. Featured in this brain-dead, but pretty hilarious collection are scenes from 12 Angry Men, Raging Bull, Schindler's List and On The Waterfront ... all with hot chicks recreating the magic of the original piece word for word. What makes it funny (to me, at

Meryl Streep: Has she ever starred in a masterpiece?

Meryl Streep is arguably our best living actress, and she's by all accounts awesome and interesting and smart, etc. But this mock editorial in the Onion, called "Name One Masterpiece Of Cinema That I've Starred In," by Meryl Streep is really, really on the money.
I know it's a joke, and that Meryl Streep didn't really write it, but the very funny piece is totally right. Por ejemplo: "... the name Meryl Streep isn't really synonymous with one truly unforgettable film. It's weird to think about, but it's undeniably true. Go ahead, try and name a classic movie I've starred in. Not a classic character I've portrayed, mind you, but an overall amazing piece of cinema. You can't. You just can't." Then it runs through some of the Streep filmography:
Kramer vs. Kramer: "Let's be honest, Kramer Vs. Kramer isn't really a masterpiece in the same way that, say, The French Connection

Budd Schulberg, who won a best-original-screenplay Oscar for On the Waterfront and penned the must-read-if-you're-in-the-movie-business novel What Makes Sammy Run, died Wednesday in New
York of natural causes at age 95. Only last week, he attended a staged reading of On the Waterfront in Hoboken, performed by a cast that included Vincent Pastore Jr., who played Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero on The Sopranos and Jason Cerbone, who played Jackie Aprile Jr. on the HBO series. Asked by the Jersey Journal about Cerbone's performance as Terry Malloy, the character made famous by Marlon Brando in the movie, Schulberg replied, "Well, nobody's ever been as good as Brando. ... But I really liked what he did with it very much. A very high-level performance."
