Some people are never down for the count. And Lauren Bacall is one of those people. The famously silver tongued siren began bewitching moviegoers when she was only 19 -- surely the most mature teenager the screen ever saw -- in To Have and Have Not (1944). Aside from a fallow 1970s, she's been working steadily since. In all that time she's never learned to hold her tongue (so many choice soundbites over the years, god bless) and she's still a lively soul at 84 going on 85. Her birthday is next week.

When she lost her only Oscar nomination (1996's The Mirror Has Two Faces) to Juliette Binoche in The English Patient, most assumed that she would be of the Have Not variety when it came to the statue, despite her marriages to two legendary Haves, Oscar winners Humphrey Bogart and Jason Robards. Don Draper: [sarcastically] This is fascinating.

Betty Draper: It's better than the Hollywood version.

Don: Certainly dirtier.

Betty: Joan Crawford is not what she was. And honestly, I found her eyebrows completely unnerving, like a couple of caterpillar's just pasted there. Her standing next to Suzy Parker... as if they were the same species.

Don: Well, some men like eyebrows. And all men like Joan Crawford. Salvatore couldn't stop talking about her.The Best of Everything (1959).

Screen legend Lauren Bacall has hit out at the current state of Hollywood, insisting modern movie stars are only interested in fame.

The How To Marry A Millionaire actress, who is considered part of Hollywood's golden age, blames tabloid culture for breeding an obsession with celebrities' lives rather than their careers.

And the 84 year old has no patience for reporters who only take an interest in the designer labels worn by the stars.

She says, "I love my profession. I have tremendous respect for it. What I don't have respect for is the red carpet and the celebrity scene. It's become a zoo. It's so stupid. They ask you stupid questions: 'What are you wearing?' Oh, Christ almighty!" »
