Superb study of psychotic killer and the race to subdue him, 9 January 2001
8/10

This is one of those true gems of a film that remind one of what the medium can accomplish. As we both follow the killer and the police who are trying to catch him, we are fascinated with and sympathetically interested in the man - a rare feat for both a screenwriter and director. Arthur Franz is superb as Andy, the psychologically disturbed misogynistic killer of brunette women. Franz made 56 films from 1948 to 1982 and here gives a superlative performance as the haunted young man. He is unable to deal with rejection and finds it constantly in every interaction with what seems a very hostile world (post-Korean War San Francisco - shot on location). He reaches out for help and is ignored. The film is a plea for tolerance, understanding and prevention of sexually offensive criminology and as such has a most intelligent screenplay. The direction by Edward Dmytryk is top notch and the Cinematography is superbly framed throughout. Shame on the Academy for giving it only a Best Story Oscar Nom - it deserved to be represented for Direction, Screenplay, Cinematography and Score. This is one to seek out and savor. A terrific accomplishment.
