Storyline

- TriviaGeorge Pal wanted to film the novel's sequel, "After Worlds Collide," which depicted the struggle of human survivors on the alien planet. However, the failure of his film Conquest of Space (1955), and the declining health of uncredited executive producer Burgess Meredith, damaged his relationship with Paramount, and the sequel was never made.
- GoofsThroughout the film, Bellus is referred to as a star; this is presumably how life is able to be sustained on Zyra. However, if this was the case, Earth would have been destroyed from the heat long before Bellus collided with it, even if it was a small brown-dwarf star. Also, departure should have been at least 17 days earlier, before descending deep into Bellus' gravity well and needing far more fuel. This part of the plot, and the time to build the ship, could have been resolved by sticking to the novel's pair of planets and a longer time frame - Zyra and Bellus both passing by with Bellus, a gas giant planet, ripping up Earth's surface, then returning months later for Bellus' direct collision with Earth, as Zyra enters orbit around the sun.

Aging Science Fiction
This film has a lot of folks who became well known as character actors later in their careers. What is most interesting though is that receiving no credit for some amazing special effects work in this film, George Pal.
Geroge would go on to do other films like the Brothers Grimm & The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao but some of the better special effect work in this film is definitely George. This was quite a challenge in 1951 to come up with special effects work to end the world as we know it.
The film has a tone of a race to save mankind that actually works pretty well. The ending with the survivors getting ready to step into their new home is OK, but the special effects leading to this ending are simply amazing.
The film is showing it's age now, & younger viewers might not appreciate it for what it is- pretty well done science fiction in it's day.
