The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

9 hours ago | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of his hit cartoon series »

'The Lovely Bones' Star Stanley Tucci Praises Christina Aguilera's Acting Debut In 'Burlesque'

11 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

When Eminem decided that his status as a superstar musician gave him the credentials to become an actor, the result was “8 Mile,” an Oscar-nominated instant classic; Mariah Carey’s 2001 bomb “Glitter” might just be the worst movie ever made. Somewhere in between, we’ve had Britney’s “Crossroads,” Whitney Houston’s “The Bodyguard,” 50 Cent’s “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” and dozens of other boundary-defying debuts. Now, it’s time for Christina Aguilera to finally make the move – and one of her famous co-stars thinks Xtina has what it takes.

“I hear she’s wonderful,” explained Stanley Tucci, the accomplished veteran actor/writer/director of more than 80 movies and TV shows, who has been cast alongside Aguilera in “Burlesque,” also starring Cher, Kristen Bell and Cam Gigandet. “I’ve been talking to some of the people at the studio, and everyone is thrilled with her.”

Silversun Pickups: From a Brush with Idol to Jeopardy

10 December 2009 9:05 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Are members of Silversun Pickups really secret Claymates? Don't hit the panic switch - they never went that far. But the indie L.A. band does have a secret connection to a decidedly less hip American Idol. "I had a really weird experience working on a Clay Aiken music video once," singer/guitarist Brian Aubert tells People of his time doing day-rate work in the entertainment industry, long before his band's best new artist Grammy nomination on Dec. 2. "It was the worst," he said, explaining that he and bassist Nikki Monninger wrangled extras for Aiken's video being shot in Hollywood. »

Hugh Grant: What Up With That?

8 December 2009 12:01 PM, PST | Celebuzz.com | See recent Celebuzz news »

Remember cute-as-a-button, stammering, stuttering, British boy-wonder, Hugh Grant? Hugh Grant from Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill?  A man so impeccably charming and adorable that he bagged a supermodel wife in Elizabeth Hurley. Then, along came Father Time (with a quick detour through Sunset Boulevard service provider, Divine Brown) and we're now facing the brutal reality that the formerly puppy-faced Hugh may now be he cringe-inducing, Mr. Grant, the creepy older neighbor from the apartment down the hall.  So what up with that? At this point, Hugh can go in one of two directions: the Sean Connery and Peter O'Toole »

Interview: Tony Curtis is the Original Fantastic Mr. Fox

5 December 2009 7:22 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Tony Curtis, who rolled into town to introduce his classic “Some Like it Hot” – December 5th and 6th at the Hollywood Palms in Naperville, Il – has a sharp and voracious intelligence, plus the adventurous life story to share.

In his new book, “The Making of Some Like it Hot,” Curtis relates the incredible Hollywood tale about how two big stars, he and Jack Lemmon, dressed up as women and collided with the incomparable Marilyn Monroe and director Billy Wilder to create a true American cinema masterpiece.

HollywoodChicago’s Patrick McDonald and photog Joe Arce encountered Tony Curtis in the lobby of the new Trump Hotel. While under the Christmas tree, Curtis regaled us with the account of his first ever trip to Chicago, appearing in a play at the Yiddish Theater on Ogden and Kedzie.

Known as Bernie Schwartz in those days, Curtis told us that he had to »

In Loving Memory of Moviedrome

30 November 2009 8:39 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

It will be no great shock to hear that living in London has both advantages and disadvantages. It is true that the cost of a 200 yd train journey may be the equivalent of a small flat in Hull, and rather like rats in New York it is said that you are never more than 100 metres away from a Premiership footballer or someone "in media", but the capital does have one thing in its favour: a vast range of unique cultural opportunities, among them some of the best independent cinemas in the country. It is true that many other cities, too, offer a wonderful alternative to the looming multiplex (Brighton, Oxford, Manchester, Bristol, to name just four that I have experienced myself) but merely by virtue of geographical and population size, London is unrivalled. At anything up to £15 they can be expensive, but for the chance to see a treasured classic on the big screen, »

Staying Sober with Viggo

25 November 2009 5:52 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Steve Pond

The last time I interviewed Viggo Mortensen, we got thrown out of a bar.

That was more than a decade ago, when he was promoting a mediocre movie and I was writing for a mediocre magazine. Viggo got on the wrong side of an aging bartender (the only other person in the Sunset Boulevard joint) by asking if he could turn down the volume on the soap opera blaring from a TV in the corner.

The guy flipped out, told us to leave, and threatened to call the cops. Since I lived a block away from the bar, we got a couple of beers from my refrigerator and finished the interview on my front »

Michael Winner: 'The only purpose of life is to avoid boredom'

The notorious film director on cheating death, the awfulness of restaurants – and how he can't stand boring people

It is with a mixture of fear and exhilaration that I approach Michael Winner's large house – he likes to describe it as a mansion – in London's fashionable Holland Park. God knows how much it's worth – £25m maybe. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin lives next door, in an even bigger house. An attractive, slightly forbidding young woman answers the door – I later discover she is a resting actress called Ruby – and she shows me into Winner's private cinema, filled with memorabilia from half a lifetime of movie-making and an entire lifetime of trouble-making.

There are seats for 30 people, a bar, a director's chair with Winner's name on it, the Winner puppet from Spitting Image, a signed photograph of Marilyn Monroe, pictures of some scantily clad starlets, and hundreds of photographs of stars »

Do we have another surprise late contender ready to join “Crazy Heart” in some major Oscar races? The next couple of weeks will tell the tale, but at the moment director Jim Sheridan’s “Brothers” is starting to look as if it may become a legitimate player.

On Sunday night, the military-themed film, which is based on Danish director Susanne Bier’s award-winning 2004 movie “Brodre,” screened for members of the Directors Guild at the DGA Theater on Sunset Boulevard. The next day, the Envelope’s Pete Hammond (who moderated the post- »
