The end of March means the beginning of baseball season in the United States. The sound of full stadiums roaring to life with every strikeout, crack of the bat, and diving catches are returning to metropolitan areas everywhere across the country.
But since there are more than 160 games in the MLB season, it’s unreasonable to think that anyone will be able to attend every game in person. The good news is, there are plenty of ways to watch baseball on TV this year, whether through regional sports networks (RSNs), MLB Network, ESPN, TBS, Apple TV+, or even out-of-market contests on MLB.TV.

The United States population is far from homogenous, and our nation's differences are reflected in our YouTube diet. At&T researchers have synthesized data from Social Blade and Google Trends to determine the top YouTube channel in each state, and some distinct regional differences can be spotted.
As we would expect to see, the three most popular categories on YouTube -- gaming, music, and family -- are all well-represented among the top channels in individual states. The rock n' roll stylings of Fueled By Ramen are popular in the Midwest, the video game guides of IGN appeal to viewers in Rocky Mountain regions like Idaho and Montana, and the bizarre Toy Freaks channel has found a particularly strong audience in several Southern states.

On Monday, August 28, 2017, Turner Classic Movies will devote an entire day of their “Summer Under the Stars” series to the late, great Louis Burton Lindley Jr. If that name doesn’t sound familiar, well, then just picture the fella riding the bomb like a buckin’ bronco at the end of Dr. Strangelove…, or the racist taskmaster heading up the railroad gang in Blazing Saddles, or the doomed Sheriff Baker, who gets one of the loveliest, most heartbreaking sendoffs in movie history in Sam Peckinpah’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.
Lindley joined the rodeo circuit when he was 13 and soon picked up the name that would follow him throughout the length of his professional career, in rodeo and in movies & TV. One of the rodeo vets got a look at the lank newcomer and told him, “Slim pickin’s. That’s all you’re gonna get in this rodeo.

Wonder Woman has already been a huge success at the box office and now it looks like the Amazonian princess is getting her own thrill ride at San Antonio's Six Flags Fiesta Texas. The Amusement park has plans to open a Wonder Woman: Lasso of Truth roller coaster in 2018! The ride will work it's way around a sizable area:
"...eight-passenger trains will carry riders across a 15.5-inch-wide steel track (which Rocky Mountain Construction has dubbed “IBox”), up 113 feet and down a 100-foot, 90-degree drop. The course also features three inversions and multiple overbanked turns, hitting speeds of 52 miles per hour."
Check out how ridiculous this coaster looks, makes me wish Six Flags: Magic Mountain was the lucky recipient of the Wonder Woman: Lasso of Truth coaster:
The president of Six Flags Fiesta Texas, says the ride is expected to be "odd to go upside down on such a tiny track.

20th Century Women (Mike Mills)
That emotional profundity most directors try to build to across an entire film? Mike Mills achieves it in every scene of 20th Century Women. There’s such a debilitating warmness to both the vibrant aesthetic and construction of its dynamic characters as Mills quickly soothes one into his story that you’re all the more caught off-guard as the flurry of emotional wallops are presented.

Health officials are cautioning that 2017 could bring the worst tick season in recent memory.
According to Time, climate change and milder winters have allowed the tick population and the animals ticks use as hosts (deer, mice, rabbits, etc.) to survive, multiply and spread across the country.
An increase in ticks also means a rise in the number of tick-borne disease cases in humans and their pets.

You can’t take it with you. It’s a saying we’ve all heard that leads some to donate charitably, others to invest in real estate, and more to siphon offshore for tax-free inheritances. For Forrest Fenn—an eccentric Air Force veteran and history buff that amassed his fortune selling artifacts and fine art in his gallery—it meant assuring his legacy. Diagnosed in 1988 with terminal cancer, he filled a ten by ten “treasure chest” with gold and jewels estimated around three million dollars. Fenn ultimately survived his ailment, deciding around age 80 to hide the wealth in the Rocky Mountains. He then wrote a cryptic poem providing clues to its whereabouts and to this day continues answering emails and conducting interviews about this bounty lying in wait.
It’s a crazy story that’s brought nearly ninety-five thousand prospectors—professional and amateur alike—to the area for the hunt.

Some superheroes lend themselves more easily to cosplay than others. While any dope can squeeze into a Superman or Spider-Man suit purchased at a deep discount from Party City and be instantly recognizable, it takes a little more effort and ingenuity to convey the essence of the size-changing Ant-Man, who is, at the risk of being pedantic, a man who can shrink himself to be ant-sized.

Walsh has had a music career of over five decades. There are many, many people who know of him mostly as a member of the Eagles (since 1975) who had a hit in 1978 with a funny song, "Life's Been Good." Yet Walsh was a music biz veteran of eleven years’ standing when Hotel California was released in 1976; he would not have been recruited into the Eagles if he had not already established himself as such a distinctive guitarist that he could instantly give them the rock cred they so desired. Already on his resume were the killer riffs of "Rocky Mountain Way," "Turn to Stone," "Walk Away,...

“The Waltons” and “Falcon Crest” creator Earl Hamner died Thursday. He was at 92. Hamner’s daughter confirmed the news on Facebook on that afternoon, writing: “Dad died peacefully in his sleep at Cedar Sinai Hospital. He was surrounded by family, and we were playing his favorite music, John Denver’s Rocky Mountain Collection. Dad took his last breath half way through Ricky Mountain High.” Hamner, who was best known for his work as creator, writer and narrator of the long-running CBS sitcom “The Waltons,” also created a number of other series, including “Apple’s Way,” Morningstar/Eveningstar” and “Falcon Crest,...

Charlotte Rampling, a Best Actress Academy Awards nominee for her performance in drama 45 Years, has weighed in on the Oscars diversity boycott, saying the backlash over an all-white acting nominee list is "racist to whites." "One can never really know, but perhaps the black actors did not deserve to make the final list," Rampling told French Radio network Europe 1 on Friday, The Guardian reports.
Asked whether the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should introduce a diversity quota, the actress responded, "Why classify people? These days everyone is more...

Donald Trump talked about the Academy Awards boycott over the ceremony's lack of diversity in a new interview with Fox & Friends, calling it "a tough situation." "This is not one of those years, but over the years I've seen numerous black actors and African-American actors receive Academy Awards, and I think that's great," Trump said.
However, the Republican frontrunner couldn't chime in on the issue without inflaming the controversy. Earlier on the episode, Fox News contributor and Clueless actor Stacey Dash downplayed the controversy, arguing that since the Bet Hip-Hop Awards didn't reward white rappers,...

The legend of Hugh Glass, the 19th-century mountain man who inspired Leonardo DiCaprio's character in The Revenant, began with one short sentence that would captivate America's imagination for centuries to come. Daniel Potts, who worked with Glass at the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, wrote a letter to his friends in 1824 about an unnamed man who, after narrowly surviving a skirmish with a Native American war party, "was allso tore nearly all to peases by a White Bear and was left by the way without any gun who afterwards recover'd." While Potts never mentions Glass by name in the letter,...

In an alternate history, the Allied Forces lost World War II and the United States has been divided into Nazi and Imperial Japanese territories, with an area dividing the two — the Rocky Mountain range — as a lawless no-man’s land of a neutral zone. In 1962, a young woman comes into possession of a mysterious film that also depicts an alternate history, one where the Allies are victorious, Japan surrenders and the Nazi regime is obliterated. Intrigued and hopeful, the woman, our story’s heroine, is pulled into the shadowy world of an underground resistance where she searches for “The … Continue reading →

Being in Canada, it's been a bit harder to stay abreast of Amazon's programming outside of "Transparent" mostly because it's not easily available here. For example, I really want to see "Red Oaks" but as far as I know, it's still not legally available north of the border. And so, Netflix becomes the default, but the stack of Amazon shows I need to keep an eye out for just got a little bit bigger. "The Man In The High Castle" is coming, and it looks very promising. The adaptation of Philip K. Dick‘s novel rewrites history and imagines a world where the Allies lost World War II. And so, the United States becomes divided among the Axis powers, with Japan presiding over the Pacific States of America, the Nazi Reich overseeing the eastern half of the United States, while in the middle is the neutral Rocky Mountain States. It's...

Dancing With the Stars pro Witney Carson is engaged, and her new bling has everyone talking! The dancer's longtime boyfriend, Carson Mcallister, popped the question over the weekend, and she was spotted showing off her new rock and a huge smile while heading into a DWTS practice on Sunday. The custom designed ring features a 2ct Rocky Mountain diamond and halo with a rose gold band. Of course Carson couldn't help but show off the sparkler in a couple of photos from the beach proposal. Seven years ago Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" had its world premiere at the Telluride film festival and the heartwarming comedy-drama went on to sweep the Oscars, winning Best Picture and seven more awards including one for the director. On Saturday he brought his new biopic "Steve Jobs" to this Rocky Mountain town as a "work in progress," which he is still tweaking prior to its Oct. 9 release. Based on the overwhelmingly positive response here, little if anything needs to be done to this strong Oscar contender for Universal. -Break- Michael Fassbender earned rave reviews for his portrayal of the mercurial inventor. Over the course of 120 minutes, he spars with the likes of Oscar champ Kate Winslet ("The Reader") as Joanna Hoffman, a member of the original Mac team; Seth Rogen as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak; and Emmy winner Jeff Daniels ("The Newsroom") as Apple CEO J...'...

One of the most, if not the most, anticipated World Premieres at the 42nd Telluride Film Festival, Universal’s Steve Jobs screened Saturday night to strong response from the Rocky Mountain Labor Day weekend cinema gathering. And it was well deserved. Steve Jobs is a riveting tale well told by director Danny Boyle and writer Aaron Sorkin. It’s a companion piece to Sorkin’s Oscar-winning The Social Network screenplay — but even more effective. Boyle said the script is 200…...

Following their own idiosyncratic tradition, The Telluride Film Festival as announced the program for its 42nd edition only one day before the festival begins. For the unfamiliar, Telluride is unlike any film festival and doesn’t offer any indication of what movies they intend on screening until the very last minute. Those who make the annual pilgrimage to the Rocky Mountain town in Colorado must purchase their ticket packages far in advance and trust that the programmers will not disappoint with their selection of films. They never do! Something else that makes the festival stand out is the absence of press and industry badges. That’s right, even members of the press have to pay for their tickets. Telluride is all the movies, and everyone is treated equally. Once again, we have writers attending this year, so be sure to check back for our coverage. Our very own Lane Scarberry...

Over the Labor Day weekend, those who make the trek to the Telluride filmfest will get to see nine of the leading Oscar contenders. In the past several years, this low-key gathering has turned into a important stop on the road to the Oscars. Four recent Best Picture winners -- "Slumdog Millionaire" (2008), "The King's Speech" (2010), "Argo" (2012) and "12 Years a Slave" -- had their world premieres here while both 2011 winner "The Artist" and last year's champ "Birdman" made their North American debuts at this Rocky Mountain resort. -Break- Of this year's Oscar contenders, Telluride will see three world premieres and a half dozen more that first screened first at a European film festival. Below are brief overviews of these nine films, including studios, stateside release dates, other festival appearances, plot descriptions, cast lists, directing and screenwriting credits. Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs, Cary Fukanaga’s Beasts of No Nation, Scott Cooper’s Black Mass, Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight and Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette are among the films awaiting festivalgoers heading to the 42nd Telluride Film Festival, which kicks off Friday and runs through Sept. 4. Following their own idiosyncratic tradition, festival organizers waited until Thursday, when moviegoers are already beginning the annual pilgrimage to the Rocky Mountain town in Colorado, to unveil the fest’s carefully curated lineup. “It’s a very strong, intelligent lineup,” promises Tff executive director Julie Huntsinger. “A lot of thought and process has gone into every single film.

With autumn coming up on the calendar, it's hard to hold back images of the approaching Halloween season—hot apple cider, cold pumpkin guts, and watchful scarecrows. The latter are featured in Joshua Viola's short story, "Scarecrows", which will be released in the upcoming horror anthology Nightmares Unhinged: Twenty Tales of Terror. Ahead of the collection's September 8th release from Hex Publishers, we have Viola's short story for Daily Dead readers to enjoy.
"Nightmares come in many forms. Some rend the veil of sleep with heart-stopping madness. Others defy sanity to leave a helpless corner of your mind twitching for release. Sometimes, hours after waking, a nightmare drifts across your memory, tainting your day with wisps of discomfort. Nightmares Unhinged reveals horror in all its mutable forms—abject to absurd—through twenty tales of terror.
Contributors include Mario Acevedo, bestselling author of the Felix Gomez vampire series; Nebula Award winner...

We love the work of Laurent Durieux, like these for The Godfather, and we love the Telluride Film Festival. Now in its 42nd year, the tiny Rocky Mountain festival that has managed to maintain its niche appeal has recruited Durieux to design this year’s poster. Not bad, right?
Telluride runs from September 4-7. You can purchase a 16” x 24” print of the poster for $40 here.
