Quotes
-
Rev. Daniels : Is he a good husband?
Lu Clayton : Well, he's got a blonde from his work in our bed right now.
-
Lu Clayton : [about Harry Gilmore, who has just passed away without repaying Sam the $180 he loaned him] I'm sure he was a wonderful man, but don't you think at times you have too much faith in people?
Sam Clayton : Lu, how can you have too much faith in people?
Lu Clayton : I know it sounds terrible, but people impose on you. You're a soft touch. You always said you could picture you and me by our own fireside. Well a hundred eighty dollars would build a pretty nice fireplace in the home we're never going to get.
Sam Clayton : Look Lu, I don't regret it. Harry Gilmore was a fine man.
[Lu sarcastically nods in agreement]
Sam Clayton : He happened to need some money, and I saw that he got it.
Lu Clayton : [in mock agreement] Of course.
Sam Clayton : Everybody thinks well of Harry Gilmore. Name one thing wrong with Harry Gilmore.
Lu Clayton : [matter-of-factly] His health!
-
Rev. Daniels : He doesn't drink?
Lu Clayton : No. Sometimes I wish he did.
Rev. Daniels : Gamble?
Lu Clayton : No, but I'd prefer it to what he's doing.
Rev. Daniels : He isn't in love with somebody else.
Lu Clayton : Yes. Everybody. He loves everybody. He's in love with the human race and even animals and bird life and fish. Why he wouldn't even swat a fly nor any of those... those leeches who cling to him. He just can't help helping people.
Rev. Daniels : And that's bad? Well, how does that affect your life?
Lu Clayton : What life? Oh, alright. You say marriage is a case of give and take. Well, he gives everything away and I just have to take it. He's so sorry for people. He's his brother's keeper but he has too many brothers. He started with mine and he's built up from there.
-
Lu Clayton : Why can't people stand on their *own* two feet and have a baby?
-
Sam Clayton : You'll feel different after she's had the baby.
Lu Clayton : So will *she*!
-
Lu Clayton : [crying] I'm fed up with your helping people behind my back. You're nothing but a double-crossing, two-faced, sneaking Samaritan!
-
Chloe : Oh! That man of mine, no good little Cassina.
Lu Clayton : Did you have trouble getting him up this morning?
Chloe : Gettin' him up, no, he didn't come home at all, the little fool. He thinks he's found another Lena Horne. All she is is lean - what she got I ain't got *twice* as much of.
[Lu laughs]
