Christmas isn't quite as fruitful as Thanksgiving for TV offerings but we've found the best options if you happen to flip on the television Dec. 24 or 25.
Apparently, Thanksgiving is the time for marathons. Christmas is almost all Christmas-themed fare. What's up with that? Here's what you can look forward to over the holiday.
Dec. 24
Bravo: Starting at 2 am Christmas Eve day, Bravo is showing all the "West Wing" Christmas episodes. These five episodes are truly among the show's best. Following the "West Wing" mini-marathon, catch a marathon of last season's "Millionaire Matchmaker."
Syfy: A marathon of "Ghost Hunters." Nothing says Christmas like ghosts. Just ask Ebeneezer Scrooge.
Dsc: "Deadliest Catch" marathon. Our dad has the DVR set.
AMC: "White Christmas" marathon. This is our all-time favorite Christmas movie, so please tune in if you've never seen it.
VH1 Classic: "Pop-up Video" marathon
ABC Family: A full day of Christmas

Hippie Hippie Shake
Opens: 2010
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby
Director: Beeban Kidron
Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.
Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.
Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence

'It's A Wonderful Life' has been voted the All-Time Favourite Christmas film. The 1946 feel-good family movie - which stars James Stewart as a man who commits suicide on Christmas Eve and meets his guardian angel who shows him what life would have been like if he'd never existed - won 17 per cent of the vote in a poll of over 3,000 people. Despite being nominated for five Oscars, 'It's A Wonderful Life' didn't win any, but the film has since been recognised by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made. Coming a close second with 16 per cent of the vote was 'Home Alone', the movie which catapulted Macaulay Culkin to

Avatar weathers heavy snow to storm up UK box office

Despite the terrible weather, James Cameron's grossed £8.51m in its first weekend on release, and signs are that it will do even better in the weeks to come
The winner
The extravagant advance claims made on behalf of James Cameron's Avatar always threatened to make its arrival anticlimactic, but it certainly got off to a flying start at the UK box office. Boosted by stellar takings at 3D and Imax screens, the sci-fi spectacle grossed £8.51m, including £1.84m in Thursday previews. Many films already on release saw steep weekend-to-weekend drops of more than 50%, which distributors will doubtless attribute to severe snow storms in parts of the country. But if there is a brand new event movie that cinemagoers impatiently wish to see, they will defy almost any weather to do so.
Avatar posted the third-biggest opening of the year, behind Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Four Must-See Christmas Movies of the 1940s

At this late date, one must prioritize one's Christmas movies. And when one prioritizes one's movies, Christmas or otherwise, it's advisable to stick with a battle-tested decade of film-making: the 1940s.
In my not-so-humble opinion, these are the best the 1940s had to offer in the way of Christmas movies. I've triaged them, so read top to bottom, but keep in mind this list assumes you've already seen It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and Miracle on 34th Street (1947), which would probably be ranked at two and four-ish. It seems that those two movies are on television in a continuous loop every year, so if you've missed them, Santa-hats off to you. But go turn on your TV right now, because you're depriving yourself.
(Also missing from this list is Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), which I adore, but

Shrek, the grumpy green ogre turned family man, will be back for his last hurrah on May 21 when "Shrek
Forever After" hits theaters.
The fourth and final installment will be the series' first 3D foray. Fans will be taken along for a ride as Shrek (Mike Myers), having grown
tired of domestic life, makes a devil's bargain with Rumpelstilskin. Shrek is then presented with visions of a world without him.Proving yet again, that the premise behind "It's a Wonderful Life,"
can be shown year-round.

Shrek Forever After Teaser Arrives

The first teaser trailer has arrived for what might just be the final Shrek outing, Forever After (though you'll excuse us if we say we'll believe that when we see it). In the fourth outing for the fairytale spoof adventure, Shrek is seemingly tired of his domesticated life with wife Fiona and the kids, and pines for a time when his mere presence could send villagers scattering. But when he strikes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to try to regain his mojo, the beardy trickster makes his life magically hell, transporting him to a version of Far Far Away where he never existed. There, he finds Donkey reduced to cart duty, Puss In Boots as a lazy slob and Rumpelstiltskin ruling the place. Yes, Shrek is going all It's A Wonderful Life. Can he rescue his kingdom? We're in the middle of December now and we're all watching our favorite Christmas movies or animated specials (either on TV or via DVD), so I thought I'd ask which is your favorite. (I know, I didn't include every single Christmas special ever made, but that's why God created the word "other").

Shrek Forever After Trailer and Poster

So, there's a fourth Shrek movie. After Shrek 3, that might not be a good thing. Appropriately, there is also now a trailer and a poster for the fourth Shrek movie. Shrek Forever After, announced as the final episode of the series, will massacre your eyeballs with 3D CGI goodness. Oh, wait. No. That's Avatar. This is a weird fantasyland remake of It's a Wonderful Life, with fart and fat jokes.
I've got a cold today and am in a generally hateful, misanthropic state of mind, but there's something about a trailer that loudly proclaims the film advertised is the final one of the series. In other words, "we're almost done, folks, and soon you won't have to suffer us any longer!"
And since there's a possible Puss in Boots spinoff and the chance that Dreamworks could always go back to the Shrek money well in the future, I expect this

Shelf Life: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Folks weren't too happy with my "Shelf Life" assessment of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation two weeks ago, and perhaps understandably so: the holidays, and holiday movies in particular, bring out the sentimentality, nostalgia, and often otherwise muted affection that folks feel at other times of the year and for other movies. But while I still plan to revisit It's a Wonderful Life next week - a film, I pre-emptively admit, I have no particular allegiance or fondness for - I figured I'd instead choose something safer, less passionately followed, less contentious: Harry Potter.
Of course I'm kidding. Few fan bases are as impassioned as those of J.K. Rowling's book series and their cinematic adaptations, and as a non-participant in its cultural phenomena, I recognize the shark-infested waters in which I find myself as I examine the artistic merits of a movie that is beloved by so, so, so many people.

Movies set at Christmastime have been a long tradition; who can resist all that great imagery, lights, snow, Santa Claus, Christmas trees, wrapped presents, candy, stockings, etc.? (It even looks good in black-and-white.) But for every It's a Wonderful Life, there have been other movies with decidedly darker dealings, sometimes set directly in contrast with the bright holiday season.
1. 'R Xmas (2001)
Combine the words "Abel Ferrara" and "Christmas" in the same sentence and you're bound to come up with a heartwarming holiday tale like this one. A well-to-do wealthy Latin American couple (Lillo Brancato Jr. and Drea de Matteo) spends the days before Christmas trying to track down the hottest new doll for their daughter (Lisa Valens) as well as packaging and selling a shipment of heroin. They're just your typical, happy New York family, until the husband is kidnapped. Ice-t plays the kidnapper. 'R Xmas is very poorly regarded

On top of everything below I recently received the Mel Brooks Collection on Blu-ray and watched a pair of Brooks's films I hadn't seen yet (Twelve Chairs and Silent Movie). The set contains seven more films, all on Blu-ray as well as six all-new featurettes exclusive to Blu-ray (such as, Silent Movie has a trivia track as well as a new 24-minute featurette focusing on silent films and how they inspired the movie). Also included are Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, History of the World - Part I, To Be or Not To Be, Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. I will have a full review of the complete set as soon as I can and hopefully before it's released this Tuesday. Stay tuned for that, but for now let's have a look at what else I watched and then hear from you!

UK cinemas enjoy £1bn boomtime with 3D renaissance

• £1bn box office revenues as attendances go past 142m
• Mass escapism and 3D blockbusters help boost sales
"It's a wonderful life!"
This is not a phrase uttered too often during this downturn unless, that is, you happen to own a cinema.
Restaurants and retailers are counting the cost of the recession but cinema has enjoyed rather a different year. In fact, mass escapism and a surge in 3D blockbusters have put UK box offices on course for record takings of £1bn in 2009.
It has been a year of big hits and next week's release of Avatar, James Cameron's 3D spectacular, is set to see 2009 go out with a bang.
Hard-up consumers have opted for nights at the cinema over costlier meals at restaurants and have flocked to big releases such as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Star Trek as well as less expected hits like Slumdog Millionaire.

Think Nasty: 10 Christmas Villains We Love

Why is it that some curmudgeonly, cold-hearted scoundrel always has a leading role in the best Christmas movies — even the ones crafted for children? Do we really require some naughty with our nice?
Considering the popular rapscallions that made our list of 10 Christmas Villains We Love — each with his own noted brand of evil and heartless quote — it would seem that it's just not Christmas without a villain.

Bill Forsyth, 1984
Whenever I contemplate the career of Bill Forsyth, I realise I'm getting old. It's more than a quarter of a century since he was considered one of the great new hopes of British cinema, but to me, the sudden flowering of his oblique, wilful talent still seems like one of the more recent miracles of film history.
After the cult success of his Glaswegian caper comedy That Sinking Feeling (just issued on DVD in an insulting format – with a dubbed soundtrack for American audiences), Forsyth hit the big time with his second feature, Gregory's Girl. I watch this film whenever it comes on TV – every two or three years, I suppose – and it never disappoints. The bittersweet experience of adolescent love is expertly captured, but more than that there is an unstoppable flow of comic invention: even the smallest characterisations are quirkily memorable, every scene crackles with good lines.

Christmas TV movies have lost their special glitter | Jason Solomons

A festive treat has become tired repeats or cartoons. Jason Solomons suggests it should now be a season for Fellini or Renoir
Forget about Christmas movies with snow and tinsel and grumpy fathers learning lessons. Those have their place, and no doubt we'll have our fill of them, good and bad, over the coming month, from Elf to Scrooged, from The Muppet Christmas Carol to Miracle on 34th Street.
What worries me is the lack of new classics. Growing up, my favourite Christmas movies were never the ones actually about Christmas. Rather, it was the season of Billy Wilder and Fred Astaire, a time for The Great Escape and The Towering Inferno, for The Poseidon Adventure and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In short, Christmas was when you learned about film, its rich history and capacity to thrill and unite.
It was when I watched films with my dad
