Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie producers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they produced in between!

Robert Siodmak's Phantom Lady (1944) and The Killers (1946) are showing in March and April, 2019 on Mubi in many countries around the world. The KillersThere’s a long-told apocryphal story about German-born silent film star Emil Jannings. He was the first-ever winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1929. After his career had waned, he would return to his homeland and form close ties with Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda. His stardom was renewed within the Third Reich’s film industry. When Berlin was reduced to rubble and Allied troops advanced on Jannings’ home, the story goes that he held his golden statuette aloft and shouted some placating words to the soldiers: “Don’t shoot, I won an Oscar!” True or not, Jannings’ tale is a cruel sort of reversal of the reality faced by artists who were forced to escape Europe during the Nazis’ reign. Throughout the thirties,...

Filtered through her experience as an unequalled comic performer, writer-director Elaine May scores a bulls-eye with this grossly underappreciated gem, fashioned in a style that could be called ‘black comedy lite.’ And that’s the release version mangled by the producer. What might it have been if May had been allowed to finish her director’s cut?

The countdown is on to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s spring 2018 wedding and Et got the scoop from royal correspondent Victoria Arbiter about all of the glorious details surrounding the couple’s big day.
As fashion designers around the globe scramble to get a shot at consideration for creating the most anticipated wedding dress of the decade, Arbiter doesn’t rule out the divorcee wearing white as she walks down the aisle.
“It won't be an issue if Meghan's dress is white,” Arbiter says, addressing Markle’s two-year marriage to Trevor Engelson. “She was married before, it didn't work out. I don't think anyone would begrudge her a white dress. She may choose something different. I'd be surprised if she did because that would be making more of an issue with the divorce, rather than that just being something of her past that everyone has moved on from.”

We love catching glimpses of Prince George and Princess Charlotte's adorable bond, but we particularly love seeing them in their matching outfits. Kate Middleton and Prince William really seem to enjoy color-coordinating their children's ensembles, and their outfits always include some shade of blue. The royal family recently wrapped up their official tour of Poland and Germany, and Charlotte and George rocked not one but three matching looks during their trip. Keep reading to see Charlotte and George's best twinning moments. RelatedPrincess Charlotte Just Rocked the Hell Out of Her Uncle Harry's Hand-Me-Down Shoes...

Prince George and Princess Charlotte have only been on the planet a handful of years, but they've already got this royal tour thing down pat. The British royal family wrapped up their official visits to Poland and Germany on Friday, and not only did Charlotte prove that she can rock the hell out of her Uncle Harry's hand-me-down shoes, but she also had two very big milestones: her first diplomatic handshake and her first curtsy. George, on the other hand, showed off his adorable curiosity by peeking out of airplane windows, and we even got a glimpse of his signature unimpressed face when he touched down in Berlin on Wednesday. We don't know about you, but we're having a hard time picking our favorite moment from the family's royal tour. RelatedThe Special Way Will and Kate Honored the Queen During Their Polish Tour...

So cute! Princess Charlotte gives her first diplomatic handshake #RoyalVisitGermany pic.twitter.com/C3fXva87hK - Victoria Murphy (@QueenVicMirror) July 19, 2017 The British royal family is in the middle of their official tour of Poland and Germany, but all we can really focus on is the youngest member of the clan: Princess Charlotte. The adorable 2-year-old has been the center of attention without even trying ever since they kicked off their trip. After staying close to mom, Kate Middleton, while getting off the plane in Poland on Monday (in her Uncle Harry's hand-me-down shoes, no less), she stopped to smell a bouquet of flowers when they touched down in Germany on Wednesday. And it was during that same arrival that Charlotte had a very big and sweet milestone: her first diplomatic handshake. In a video captured by Daily Mirror's royal correspondent Victoria Murphy, Charlotte is seen shaking hands with a German official.

Princess Charlotte had us oohing and ahhing over her adorable debut in Poland this week, during which the 2-year-old stuck close to her mom, Kate Middleton, in a pretty floral dress and red flats. The shiny red shoes bear a striking resemblance to a pair that Harry wore back in 1986, complete with buckle strap, beige sole, and slight scuffing on the rounded toes. Of course, Harry and Charlotte have much more in common than strong footwear game - they're both a "spare to the heir" who will one day bond over playing backup to an older sibling who will one day take the throne. Just last month, Charlotte's big brother George also sported a look inspired by Uncle Harry; at the Trooping the Colour parade, the nearly 4-year-old prince was decked out in a white collared shirt and suspender getup that harks back to one worn by Harry at the...

The new movie year has just gifted us with its first indisputable film fiasco. Don't you just love January – the official burial ground for Hollywood cinematic sins against art and entertainment. Ok, my expectations were low for Underworld: Blood Wars. But scraping bottom would be a step up for this fifth chapter in the series, which inexplicably retains a loyal box-office following. Prince William has already confirmed that Prince George will be "bouncing around like a rabbit" come Christmas morning, but a source tells E! exclusively that he and Kate Middleton are more than excited to make sure Princess Charlotte's first big holiday in their country home, Anmer Hall in Norfolk, is a special one. If you haven’t read The Sculptor, stop reading this and go get yourself a copy immediately,
Need more persuasion? Okay, but you’re missing out on valuable time that could be spent reading this awesome book. I’ve been a fan of Scott’s since Zot because it was funny and human and had a villain named Art Deco. More people became fans when he published the brilliant Understanding Comics. There is no one who uses the graphic story medium to better effect than Scott McCloud.
The Sculptor showcases McCloud’s mastery of technique. His use of color is impeccable. The book is black and white with blue tones, giving the different scenes a variety of moods and weights. The way he uses overlapping word balloons reminds me of an Altman movie. The panel arrangements speed up time and slow it down, depending on the needs of the character.

Available for the first time on Blu-ray or DVD and remastered in high definition is forgotten film noir Witness to Murder, a 1954 Barbara Stanwyck potboiler also starring George Sanders and Gary Merrill. As written by Chester Erskine (The Egg and I, 1947), the film feels like plenty of other narratives, though its frustrating contrivance of hysteria as dramatic tension places it squarely within a particular male dominated paradigm. In particular, the film feels eerily reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, which actually opened a month after this Roy Rowland directed venture, doomed to be overshadowed and quickly forgotten. But, magnificently photographed by John Alton, it’s a shadowy and angular motion picture, enjoyable for its considerable melodrama as a portrait of misinformed and misogynistic gender politics.
Cheryl Draper (Barbara Stanwyck) witnesses a young woman being murdered in the apartment complex adjacent to her own. She calls the police to report what she sees.

It’s easily the biggest event of the year, and when Kate Middleton gives birth to Prince William's baby this month, there will be plenty of money to be made.
As expected, there are all kinds of Royal-baby-themed novelties on the market already, however the mystery surrounding the name and gender of the child has created a bit of an obstacle for creating more personalized goods.
For example, fine bone china craftsman Sophie Allport has resorted to taking pre-orders for her mugs, contingent on Will & Kate’s choice of moniker for their bundle of joy. "We've never done something like this so I hope it works.”
British Ceramic Confederation CEO Francis Morrall agreed- "All of the designs will have been prepared months ago.”
Still, creative capitalists have come up with a full line of products (think “I Love Uncle Harry” and “Born to Rule” slogans) that are already market-ready.

Hollywood star speaks to invisible Barack Obama at Republican convention, berating him over invasion of Afghanistan
He was there to make the Republicans' day. But the Hollywood star turned out to be less Dirty Harry than somebody's "drunk uncle Harry", as one Twitter contributor called him.
Clint Eastwood did end up stealing the show at Mitt Romney's formal appointment as his party's choice for the Us presidential election but perhaps not in the way he or the candidate would have wanted.
The 82-year-old's rambling gravel-voiced conversation with an empty chair – supposedly supporting an invisible Barack Obama – proved a bizarre and confusing warm-up act for Romney.
"Mr President, how do you handle promises that you have made when you were running for election, and how do you handle them? I mean, what do you say to people?" he asked. He berated Obama for not learning from the Russian experience in invading Afghanistan.

Star Jones has accused Clint Eastwood of embarrassing himself at the Republican National Convention. The Dirty Harry star - and ex-mayor of Carmel, CA - made a surprise appearance on the final night of the convention on Thursday (August 30) to officially endorse Mitt Romney. Eastwood's address drew mixed reviews, especially the section where he 'debated' with an empty stool which was supposed to represent Us President Barack Obama. Former View co-host and current Today analyst Star Jones was one of the many stars who reacted to Eastwood's speech on Twitter. Jones accused the actor of hurting his legacy by appearing to ramble, writing: "I can't believe I just watched #ClintEastwood turn into somebody's Drunk Uncle Harry on the stage of the (more)...

YouTube has decided to be extra generous to us TV junkies this holiday season by giving the gift of a Simpsons-Breaking Bad mash-up. As you can imagine, it is glorious in every way. So step it up, Uncle Harry. If a video site can get us Ned Flanders as Walter White, socks just aren't going to cut it anymore. Watching Ned and Bart act out the parts of Walt and Jesse would have been more than enough, but this video doesn't stop there. It features super-specific, super-amazing references such as Tuco's post-snort "tight!" rant and the infamous Atm scene. Jane also gets a nod, in a moment you will make you feel terrible for laughing so hard. Would it be too greedy to hope for a sequel featuring Gustavo and Mike?
