If there's one thing I've learned from watching countless horror movies and episodes of "Scooby-Doo," it's that you don't mess with mummies. It's a superstition that's held so strong over the years that even when visiting museums, I tend to respectfully steer clear of the ancient Egypt exhibits. Myths about the latent powers of mummified royals have been around for ages, and many of them have been unfortunately influenced by stereotype-heavy depictions of Egypt and surrounding African and Middle Eastern cultures. Regardless of how much the world now knows about ancient Egyptian burial rituals, when most American moviegoers picture a mummy in their mind's eye these days, they're as likely to think about a Universal Pictures movie monster as they are the real thing.

Long before Jigsaw and Annabelle, Ghostface and Samara—going back to even before Freddy and Jason—there were the Universal Monsters. These were the creatures and character designs who were so iconic that they defined what the horror genre was to most moviegoers during the earliest decades of talking pictures. Primarily released in two film cycles by Universal Pictures across the 1930s and ‘40s (plus a few outliers on both sides of this), the legacy of these films and the people who made them endures still. It echoes in Halloween costumes and TV specials, merchandise toys and candies, it’s even informing recent Blumhouse films and Netflix’s Wednesday. Right now, you can go to any Universal theme park and meet the Monsters as un-goodwill ambassadors at “Halloween Horror Nights.”

For more than a hundred years, the face of the ancient Egyptian mummy has been synonymous with horror, dread, and the ever reliable go-to Halloween costume. This can probably be traced to almost exactly a century ago when Howard Carter, Lord Carnarvon, and the latter’s daughter, Lady Evelyn, crossed the hitherto unbroken seal of King Tutankhamun’s tomb on Nov. 26, 1922.
Until that moment, the boy pharaoh had largely been forgotten by history. Yet as fate would have it, he left behind the only pharaonic tomb ever discovered mostly intact in the modern age. It was the greatest archaeological find of all time and should have been cause for lifelong celebration… but less than six months later Lord Carnarvon was dead. Technically, he died of blood poisoning, but as far as the British press (and soon the whole world) was concerned, the Curse of the Pharaohs got him! As other...

We’ve talked about the loose definition of based on a true story but what happen when what the movie is based on may not even be entirely factual. This is can happen with movies like The Possession which was based on an internet article that someone fleshed out into a story when they thought the thing they bought was cool. Other times a movie can be merely inspired by an event even when they don’t credit that event in the film’s credits. Think A Nightmare On Elm Street. Perhaps Universal’s most renowned contributions to cinema lie in their horror library. Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, if you can name it they probably made it. But until now, that awesome catalogue was unavailable to view in one place. Sounds like the grousing of a spoilt millennial, I know. The fact is that we’ve all become accustomed to having content at our fingertips. Praise be then that a streaming service has today launched to fulfil that demand. Peacock brings Universal’s esteemed horror collection to the masses.
Unlike its rivals, the service has both a paid-for package and a free one (though you’ll have to contend with adverts). Why not take a look at all the horror films currently available for free, though? Trick question, as there’s no reason why not to. That’s why all the horror films currently available for free are listed below.

Draft Day I guess the discussion before releasing Draft Day was whether or not to take advantage of the start of the NFL season with the theatrical release or the DVD and Blu-ray release and the home video marketing team won because clearly that's the reason for bringing it out today, but does anyone care at this pointc The movie is no good, especially for anyone with a passing understanding of, or interest in, the NFL.
Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection I'm not sure what I think about this one. While it would be awesome to own all of these titles, why Universal decided to go DVD-only is beyond me. If someone is a big enough fan of Universal's Classic Monsters franchise aren't they going to want them all and be willing to pay for them all on Blu-rayc Is it the cost involved in restoring them all and...

Universal Pictures is planning a reboot of its succesful The Mummy franchise. Variety reports that the studio has set Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts on the project.
"I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus," Spaihts tells the outlet. "To go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before."
Universal originally released The Mummy in 1932 and followed it with four sequels between then and 1944, including The Mummy's Hand, The Mummy's Tomb, The Mummy's Ghost and The Mummy's Curse. In 1955, the studio spoofed the property with Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy and then left the franchise dormant until a big screen reboot in 1999.

This has nothing to do with Universal's Mummy movies nor is it a remake of the 1944 Lon Cheney film The Mummy's Curse. La Times reports that Dimension Films is developing a horror movie called The Mummy Archives, similar to Paranormal Activity and described as "a more artful and modestly budgeted version of The Mummy." The concept, conceived by Doug Wick, focuses on several young people who are haunted by a mummy curse, with most of the action playing out in the "unseen realm," as both the audience and the characters frequently experience the effects of the curse without seeing it. This sounds very interesting. Dimension has hired Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego, a young Spanish genre director who directed a film called King of the Hill (or El Rey De la Montaña) previously, to write the screenplay and direct the film. The Mummy Archives is expected to have a very low budget of...
