Scenes of Wartime Germany.
r4qire818 December 2004
This was one of the last motion pictures made in Germany during World War II and gives one the feel for mid war period in that country.

While the Nazi Government is never mentioned, the film appeals to the German's work ethic in crafting the aeronautical tools for Victory, final victory as in "Endsieg". From the background one can see that the movie was filmed on site at Heinkle Aircraft's Rostock on the Baltic facility. Matter of fact the "owner" of the factory even looks like Ernst Heinkle, the real owner of Heinkle. There are nice line ups of the standard Heinkle 111 bombers of the period, and if you look closely you'll see The secret Heinkle 177 "Greif" in a background shot that the censors must have missed. "Production for the Front" should be the sub title of this movie as the factory scenes involving the young apprentices spending every moment for a few weeks working overtime producing cockpits for the He-111 to replace those lost in a "fire" (wartime bombing?") seems to be the message of the film. The theme music and pieces through out the movie are catchy if you see the movie more than once you may find yourself humming some of the tunes next day! The cast is very professional, my German is not that good, but most of the words can be easily understood and the plot followed. Actually quite a few plots thread through this one but that seems to be common in German wartime movies.

Eberhard Krüger at the young age of nine or so is easily recognised as the, now older, Hardy Kruger of US movies. The rest of the cast puts on a very impressive performance considering that this was made to induce a younger viewing population to consider working in aviation production at an early age.

If you like what you see the first viewing, try and see it a few more times to completely understand it.

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this on you tube. This was also on Internet Archive also.It was not a great print. It looked like it was on V.H.S. It was a public domain print. The print was fair but it was not excellent. German war films dot com does not have a great print. Reich Kino has sent their original master tracks to the various laboratory's ,in Germany, For re mastering on the original elements. I've been waiting for orders my self. It's like a doll hospital slow. But they will have a pristine image soon, unless they already got it.This starred three actors who would make it big in the future. Hardy Kruger, who would show up in some American movies.Gunnar Mollar, Who showed up in the Odessa Files but would be a great German film and T.V. star.Dietmarr Shonherr, who would show up in The longest Day.Willy Fritz, who plays the teacher Roth, of the air craft school, became a member of the Nazi party but tried to avoid being in pro war and military and propaganda movies. But he was pressured into being in this film. Two German stalwart character actors are in it. Paul Henkels, who plays the teacher D.r. Vorr.Albert Florath as Father Steel. Father! This film gives no impression of what faith this characters in, whether he's catholic or otherwise. Maybe the church of the Nazi's?Christianity was illegal. But his character plays a confidante for the apprentice boys for the air craft plant This movie was not a success because of the Nazi propaganda was too noticeable. There some hypocrisy too in this film. One of the apprentice students is an aspiring musician . Earlier Theo, played by Dietmarr , gives a gift of a violin to one of the students thru his sister Annemie, played by Gerta Bottcher, At the students dorm. Later he's putting on a little concert backed up by Theo, at his house. After the concert they play a record. Forbidden fruit. Illegal jazz tune of the movie theme. The story. Theo Brakke ,played by Dietamarr, is a spoiled son of the owner of the airplane Factory, played by Herbert Hubner. Pa Pa Brakke feels that his son is behind his school studies and feels he should forget about the boat racing at the regalia. Willy Fritz , as Roth, informs the students , out side the airplane field, with Pa Pa Brakke that there will be no school today to go see the boat races with their own student competing with another student of another School. It turns out that Theo disobeyed Pa Pa Brekke and is one of the students who's competing. He wins. His father glad that he won but wished he focus on improvement of his studies. When he and the students go out and celebrate that night at the coffee shop not only does he tells coffee shop owner , played by Ariber Wascher, that his father will pay the bill but later that night but ends up in a car accident where the car , they were using loses it's breaks and runs into the front of the coffee shop, even though non of them were in the car. The teacher already talked to Pa Pa Brekke about his school studies problems, confronts him ,Theo coming home later jumping on him about it and insist that he now go to the student apprentice school of the Air craft factory. Theo sends a mysterious letter to the coffee house owner telling him what happened and that it was an accidents and he was sorry. But But Aribert get suspicious and when he goes to Theo's father to get the money from the party as he about to show the letter, he changes his mind. He has a plan.Well ,Theo already getting adjusted at the dorm of the school for aircraft apprentices meets his new room mates, Bauchman ,played by a young Hardy Kruger, with his pet bird and the student who is a gifted Musician. Well Theo feels so bad that he goes to Aribert one night and confesses he did it. Aribert blackmails him telling him that he has a certain date to tell his Father about this and get the money or he will take it to his Father directly. In the beginning Theo is arrogant and doesn't take to comrade ship. One of the students try to start a fight with him. Willy suggest they box amateur. Theo gets knocked down. On the landing area Willy offers the students a flight on the plane. Joseph Sieber, who plays the pilot, offers Hardy Kruger for the first time a ride on the plane. Later on that night , at the dorm he decides to let his bird go free. Later at the beach area where the boys are doing a job, Theo is asked to go back to get some milk, on his bicycle , and ends up almost drowning with the hi tide coming up. A student rescues him with a horse buggy. Theo get's mad with Roth ,Willy, cause Roth is interested in his sister,Annamie , thinking he just interested in her to get ahead.Theo has an Argumant about it. Well the time up and so Aribert goes to Pa Pa Brakke to tell him about the car accident. The kids find out ahead so they manage to get funds to help Theo pay for that front. By that time pa pa Brakke finds out and goes up to him and dismisses him cause of this. Then Will goes to the boss to tell him a how much he improved and how the boys payed the cost of the accident. There a concert for the workers and the boys are suppose to sing in it. They convince pa pa Brakke to reinstate him and the young aspiring violinist has a surprise. He's given the responsibility to conduct the orchestra. this movie has been available in Germany on t.v. since 96. But not on d. v.d up there.Better print available at Reichskino
