The original superhero of Bollywood, wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh passed away this morning at the age of 83.
Singh was fighting for his life for the past week after being taken to the hospital on Saturday when he suffered a cardiac arrest. Doctors were doing everything in their power to help him, but his condition worsened.
On Wednesday Dr. Ram Narain told the press that he had “less chance of recovery” due to serious damage to his brain. The actor was shifted back home on Wednesday evening so he could be with them for one last time.
“As Dara Singh’s condition was deteriorating fast, respecting wishes of his family, he has been shifted home with ventilator and medicines. A nurse and a doctor are at his home. There are no medicines that will reverse the brain damage… only if a miracle happens. He might even slip into coma,” said Dr Ram Narain,...

Polish film was an early frontrunner, before occupation forced wave after wave of talent abroad. Its fortitude is embodied by Andrzej Wajda – still going strong 50 years after his first feature
There aren't many traces on the internet of the early Polish pioneers: people such as Kazimierz Prószyński and Bolesław Matuszewski who were operating at the turn of the century, turning out silent short docos called things like Ślizgawka w Łazienkach (Skating-rink in the Royal Baths). (Prószyński was also a pioneering camera inventor, developing a model called a pleograph in 1894, and a handheld effort called an aeroscope in 1909.) Nor is there any link for Anton in Warsaw for the First Time, Poland's legendary first feature film, directed by and starring Antoni Fertner in 1908.
Fertner, though, went on to a respectable career as an actor in the interwar period – you can see him as an old man in Książątko (1937, above) and Gehenna...

Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, London
What a wonderful world it isn't. But despite the global sweep of conflict, oppression, torture and other abuses dealt with, this festival is never a depressing experience. Instead it's the power of information in action, a vivid picture of what's going on in the world and how to change it. There are hot-button topics like Arab democracy (The Green Wave, on Iran's 2009 elections) and the war on terror (You Don't Like The Truth – 4 Days Inside Guantánamo, The Oath), but there's also powerful drama, like family mystery Incendies or Belgian immigration saga Illégal, and even heartwarming stories like A Small Act, on the far-reaching consequences of a charitable donation.
Various venues, Wed to 1 Apr
Werner Herzog, London & Nationwide
You'd think the German veteran had seen it all, but he keeps finding new wondrous sights to show us. In recent years that has included cash...
