- Zuzanka (Natasa Gollová) can finally stop toiling away at washing dishes at hotel Mercur after a distant aunt has bequeathed her her own hotel - Blue Star. She proudly marches over to the luxury hotel in the center of town and immediately begins to change the personnel. Because this involves the facilities belonging to a joint-stock company, which no one can inherit, she is considered insane. It comes out that her inheritance is in reality a small, shabby little hotel of the same name in the IV town district. The personnel are three unemployed youths who in this way work off the money they owe for rent. The first guest is wealthy Vladimír Rychta Rohan (Oldrich Nový), whose parents spent their honeymoon in this very hotel. He wants to celebrate his wedding there, with which his fiancée Milada (Adina Mandlová), who is waiting for him at the luxurious Blue Star, does not concur.
- Vienna during the fin de siecle. Farmer's daughter Anuschka has to sell the farm after her father's death to the rich but mean farmer's wife Nowarek and her friendly son Jaro. Anuschka goes to Vienna and starts to work as a housemaid until she is wrongly accused of theft. In order to restore her dignity she seeks for help plus suddenly Jaro appears to help her and so on and so forth..
- Many local dignitaries are gathered at an auction organized by the notary Dr Jan Karas (Oldrich Nový) at Lucín castle to sell off the belongings of the late count. Most interest is aroused by a portrait of a beautiful noble girl, but no-one buys it because it is said to be cursed. Until the young count arrives to decide what to do with the portrait, Karas keeps it at home. Fascinated by the beauty of the girl, Karas spends hours in front of the portrait. Then one day he kisses it and the girl (Lída Baarová) comes to life and steps out of the picture. The girl introduces herself as countess Blanka of Blankenberg, and has no intention of getting back into the canvas.
- After several years abroad Michal Nor comes back home to his aunt Pa and his sister Eva who just came back from board school. Aunt Pa is having a birthday soon and Eva knows that she would very much like the recipe for growing a special species of rose that her neighbor Mr. Záhorský had bred. However her aunt has difficult relationship with her neighbors and so Eva wants to steals the recipe. She poses as the neighbors' secretary. By coincidence Michal is also in the house but impersonating an English earl. And so begins a chain of funny accidents and misunderstandings.

- "Grandmother" is a highly romanticized autobiographical novel by a Czech 19th century writer, Bozena Nemcova. It's a classical, compulsory reading in Czech schools, about a wise, working-class woman, happier in her simplicity and good heart than the nobles whom she serves.
- Josef Hupka loves music more than anything in the world. He fails his graduation and joins wandering musicians. His wife becomes the violinist Hanci, who gives birth to his son Hynek. Unfortunately, however, Hanci dies of typhus and Josef is left alone with his son. He tries to make a living by playing on the street.

- After three failed marriages, the wealthy landowner Orlický is a sworn enemy of women. He demands the same attitude from all his employees. His nephew Rísa, who lives on the farm as an adjunct, is no exception. But Rísa regularly goes behind his uncle's back to meet his neighbor's daughter. Orlický soon becomes suspicious and decides to bring the young man to his senses. So he provides him with competition. He invites another of his nephews, the cabaret singer Ada Bártu, who has a diploma from the economic school, to the farm. Orlický had only a vague idea of Ada's existence, but he remembered them thanks to his picture in the newspaper. Orlický has no idea that Ada is in fact a girl who only performs on stage in a man's costume. And that she falls in love with Rísa.
- In Skoda's factories, where in 1914 they feverishly arm themselves, the foreman Kalina, the father of Pavel and Jan, works. Pavel is a supporter of the monarchy, Jan, on the other hand, defends the idea of national independence. Just before mobilization, Jan flees to Russia, where he joins the group of volunteer legionnaires "Czech Company" fighting against the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Pavel enlists in the Austrian army. The brothers did not meet again until July 1917 in the battle of Zborov in Ukraine, which marked the successful breakthrough of the Austro-Hungarian front.
