Brian Benlifer was an independent filmmaker and writer. In 1973, he joined Robert Geller to found a private, non-profit film production company, Learning in Focus Inc. With his partner he created the American Short Story Series, a dramatization of Classic American short stories, including works by William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain, Willa Cather, and others. A total of 17 episodes aired on PBS from 1974 to 1980. Benlifer was also the director of the Media Educators Association of New York and was on the staff of Adelphi College, where he taught film producing.
