The show must go on—even without its snarky, British center of attention, apparently. Despite the news from a seemingly solid source (it was the guy's brother, for goodness' sake!) that Simon Cowell plans to end his stint as a judge on American Idol after the upcoming 2010 season, the show's ninth, Fox is reportedly willing to go on without him. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the network and Idol producers FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment are close to inking a deal that will keep the still-chugging talent show on the air for another three seasons. That's three seasons after their current contract ends in 2011, mind you... Fox refused to comment, and Cowell »

Frances Bean Cobain is protected against her mother Courtney Love by a temporary restraining order - but why? Although attorneys have revealed few details in the case, court documents released Wednesday speak generally of "personal problems in the family" and more specifically of "domestic violence." There's no elaboration, and these disclosures came in a motion to seal documents in the case in which the court has stripped Love of legal control of her 17-year-old daughter with the late Kurt Cobain and appointed the teen's grandmother and aunt as temporary guardians. Since the case was made public, Love, 45, has posted a »

Bad Timing Alert! Chilling Brittany Murphy Movie Art Pulled
2 hours ago | E! Online | See recent E! Online - Movies and Television news »
It's an eerie and tragic example of life imitating art. In a dreadful case of bad timing, Brittany Murphy's sudden death on Sunday has forced the DVD rental company Redbox to yank box art images from its kiosks nationwide for the actress's latest film, Deadline. The cover shows the 32-year-old's character lying lifeless in a bathtub. Murphy, of course, collapsed in the bathroom of her Hollywood Hills home Sunday morning and, after unsuccessful attempts by family and paramedics to revive her, was pronounced dead at the hospital. And that sent Redbox scrambling when it realized what was on the cover of the straight-to-dvd horror thriller. "We are removing the »

The R-Rated promo means there's plenty of blood, guts, boobs and bad language for a film that feels like the organ donor scene from Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life via Repo! The Genetic Opera, but with 100% less singing. We're in a near future world where human organs can be replaced fairly easily, but the cost of paying for them is crippling. Life-saving procedures require heft credit outlay and when the owners of new hearts/livers/whatever can't anymore, that's when the repo men are called in.Enter Remy and Jake (Jude Law and Forest Whitaker), two of the best in the business. CBS made it almost a clean sweep in last week's ratings competition. Of the top 15 entertainment shows, CBS accounted for 14 of them. The two news programs drew solid numbers throughout the week, with the NBC newscast averaging 9.22 million viewers and the ABC newscast, 8.49 million. For the week overall, CBS averaged a 7.0 rating and a 12 share. NBC placed second with a 4.5/8. Fox followed with a 4.1/7, while ABC trailed with a 3.1/5.

Simon Cowell will quit his role as judge on American Idol after the coming season, his brother Tony said Tuesday. The London tabloid The Sun, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, which is also the corporate parent of Idol's network, Fox Broadcasting, reported that Tony Cowell said on his weekly podcast, "A press statement is being prepared which will confirm what everyone expected -- Simon will leave Idol at the end of 2010 to concentrate on bringing the American version of The X Factor to U.S. TV in 2011." The podcast was later removed from Tony Cowell's website. A spokesman for Simon Cowell and Fox Broadcasting declined to comment on the report, which coincidentally appeared on the same day that an audience research firm reported that the show would lose nearly half its viewers if Cowell left. The study by Hcd Research found that 47 percent would watch Idol less »

Will New Rental Kiosk Spell Blockbuster’S Doom?
3 hours ago | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »
A new video-rental kiosk capable of providing consumers with an unlimited number of movies, TV shows or videogames that can be downloaded onto thumb drives or video discs in a matter of seconds has been developed by Symwave of Laguna Niguel, CA and Xona Media of San Francisco, the two companies announced Tuesday. The MK3 DVD+Digital kiosk uses advanced Usb 3.0 technology to achieve fast transfers. "Consumers can select and download a movie at a convenient MK3 kiosk with the entire transaction taking less time than getting cash from an Atm," Symwave marketing chief John O'Neill said in a statement. "The movie playback is then just as simple as plugging the flash drive device in to any commonly used Usb compatible media player including gaming platforms and DVD players." Moreover, the downloaded films need not be returned to the kiosk since they are automatically deleted after viewing. In addition, the kiosks will cost less than $5,000, the companies said, versus $15,000 to $25,000 for the current Redbox types. »

James Cameron Urges China To Change Film Policies
3 hours ago | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »
A day after the World Trade Organization rejected China's appeal of a ruling rejecting its restriction of movie imports, director James Cameron told reporters in Beijing that China doesn't need such restrictions. What's more, he argued, doing away with those restrictions could actually benefit Chinese filmmakers. Arriving in the Chinese capital to promote the opening of Avatar on January 2 (the opening was delayed because the Chinese quota on foreign films had already been reached for 2009), Cameron told reporters, "By opening the doors in China to other filmmakers, it will raise the entire film industry in China. ... There will be more seats, more cinemas, more excitement about the cinema-going experience, which will also raise the Chinese filmmakers' ability to play their films." Meanwhile, MPAA Executive V.P. Greg Frazier told the Wall Street Journal Tuesday that his group will begin talks with China early next year to wok out a compliance schedule. »
Movie Reviews: “Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel”
3 hours ago | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »
One of the most surprising blockbusters of all time was the original Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, which grossed more than $217 million in the U.S. The sequel (or "squeakquel" as its called in the title, is not likely to perform as well, although several critics are advising box-office followers to expect the unexpected. Not that they can find much to praise about the film; most of their reviews sound as if they wish they could be writing about something else. Comments Claudia Puig in USA Today; "For anyone over age 8, the arrival of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel may not be the most welcome news." Peter Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle brought his four year old along to the screening, who, he says, "laughed pretty much nonstop throughout." However, he writes, "despite its success as a babysitter for preschoolers, it's a not a very good film." Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News says the "movie's plot is a hodgepodge of standard kid-film elements." Tongue firmly placed in cheek, Betsy Sharkey comments in the Los Angeles Times: "Perhaps not since The Godfather: Part II have we seen a sequel come along that more than matches the mastery of the film that came before it -- all the pathos, the brio, the epic sweep ... the cheese balls" Actually Sharkey's is one of the few positive reviews of the movie. "The script includes enough clever moments to help put The Squeakquel in solid family entertainment territory," she concludes. And Michael Sullivan in the Washington Post pays the movie this left-handed compliment: "Call it a Christmas miracle, albeit a minor one: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel isn't entirely awful." »

'Knight & Day' trailer: Could one movie redeem Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz?

Any trailer that got me past the lamely punny title Knight & Day is worth watching. Any trailer that got me excited about Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise again, even moreso: I still don't know exactly what it's about, and that's what's so cool. What's even cooler? These two superstars reminding us why they're superstars. Cameron Diaz is playing her trademark likable everygirl in an action-packed premise (half Charlie's Angels, half My Best Friend's Wedding). And Tom Cruise somehow seems to be combining his greatest hits -- the flirtatious charm of Top Gun, the gun-toting swagger of Mission: Impossible, the self-deprecating (but still sexy! »
