A Prophet Trailer

Jacques Audiard's A Prophet (Un Prophete) was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film earlier today, helping to build on the buzz that already started when it won the Grand Prix runner-up prize at Cannes in May. Sony Pictures Classics will release the film stateside early next year, and a new domestic trailer has just hit the web. A Prophet is a crime drama about a 19-year-old Arab who is sentenced to six years in a French prison. He is taken under the wing of a Corsican godfather and forced to run jobs for the mafia, leading to conflict both internal and external. The trailer looks pretty awesome to me so I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this one. A Prophet hits select theatres on February 26th. HBO’s The Ricky Gervais Show Animated Preview, Plus: Karl Pilkington’s Travel Show!

British comedian Ricky Gervais is a pretty busy man these days. As he continues to put the finishing touches on his next movie Cemetery Junction with his partner in crime Stephen Merchant, he's got all kinds of other things to worry about including preparing to host the Golden Globes, promoting the DVD release of his last film The Invention of Lying, recording more episodes of his podcast, and promoting the launch of the animated version of that podcast on HBO! Last month he appeared on Letterman and premiered a clip from HBO's The Ricky Gervais Show which debuts February 19th. If you've listened to the podcast before, you should recognize the conversations, but it's pretty cool to see how they've used animation to bring it all to life. Is it just me, or does the cartoon version of Gervais look like Fred Flintstone? A second clip from the show has »

This Week on DVD: Inglourious Basterds, The Hangover, Taking Woodstock

This week's DVD release line-up may not be huge in terms of quantity, but it makes up for it with quality. Inglourious Basterds, The Hangover and G-Force will all probably be hot items to throw under the Christmas tree this year. Also out this week is Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock and The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard (previously only available for rental), along with the fourth season of Adult Swim's Robot Chicken. On Blu-ray, it's the third and final season of Star Trek: The Original Series and The Mel Brooks Collection, meanwhile Best Buy has the exclusive debut of Boogie Nights in high-def. Will you be doing any DVD shopping this week? The Hangover [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Inglourious Basterds [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) G-Force [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) Taking Woodstock [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard [9] Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie [10] The Other Man [11] (DVD, Blu-ray [12]) The Girl from Monaco [13] Murder by Decree »

Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air Leads 2010 Golden Globe Nominees

Awards season is now in full swing as the 2010 Golden Globe Nominees were unveiled this morning in Beverly Hills, California. Jason Reitman's Up in the Air appears to be an early favourite as it picked up a total of 6 nods including Best Feature (Drama), Best Director, Best Actor (Drama) and two spots for Best Supporting Actress. Not too shabby, especially considering that they decided to throw it in the Drama category! Other notable nominees include Avatar claiming a spot under Best Feature, Matt Damon getting nominated for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor (The Informant! and Invictus), and Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell getting some recognition for District 9 under Best Screenplay. The biggest snub in my opinion? Not a single mention of John Hillcoat's The Road. Check out the full list of movie-related nominees after the jump; to see the rest visit the Hfpa website [1]. The »

Best of the Decade #11: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

If you told me as I left the theater from the first entry in The Lord of the Rings trilogy that I’d eventually be writing up an explanation of it as one of the best films of the decade, I’d have said you were crazy. Yes, I initially was not on board with the first of this now beloved set of films. Several revisits of the extended edition have turned me into a believer, even as I continue to make lame jokes about Sam and Frodo’s relationship, walking, and why they should have taken the stupid eagles to Mordor instead. Although it is still the second and third films that I personally prefer, it is The Fellowship of the Ring that sets the table, and thus represents the trilogy on our top 20 list. Without the passion and dedication of Peter Jackson, I don’t see how this »

Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood Trailer Starring Russell Crowe

Here we go... the first official trailer for Ridley Scott's Robin Hood has hit the web a few days earlier than expected, and I believe it will also debut in theatres along with James Cameron's Avatar. I know a lot of people are looking forward to this as it reteams Ridley Scott with Russell Crowe in an action movie setting reminiscent of Gladiator. The trailer certainly plays up the action angle above all else, featuring plenty of gritty, slow-mo battle sequences set to a little bit of rock music. Zack Snyder would be proud. I guess it does the job as far as proving that this is a new take on the character we haven't necessarily seen before. It's hard to say much else at this point, but I'm definitely on board with the adaptation thus far. The movie also co-stars Mark Strong, Matthew Macfadyen, Kevin Durand, Danny Huston, »

Tobey Maguire to Play Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit?

14 December 2009 2:01 PM, PST

Looks like we've got our first big casting rumour this week for The Hobbit, which as we reported last week [1] has now officially entered the audition stage. The old rumour of James McAvoy playing the lead role of Bilbo Baggins has long since been shot down, but now the good folks over at Latino Review [2] have dug up an interesting lead on another star who is apparently itching to grow some hair on his feet: Tobey Maguire! While doing press for Brothers last month, Maguire was asked what director he'd like to work with next. His reply? Guillermo Del Toro. He also hinted that he was currently pursuing a project with the man. After checking some sources, Latino Review managed to confirm that he is indeed in "early talks" for the role. It doesn't necessarily mean he's close to a deal at this point, and they're probably still looking at other actors as well, »

David O. Russell to Write and Direct Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

14 December 2009 2:01 PM, PST

So, about this Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie... it just got a lot more interesting. When I first heard about Seth Grahame-Smith's mash-up of the 1813 Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice, it sounded to me like just another ironic fanboy creation. Kind of amusing, sure, but mostly appealing because of the ridiculous title rather than the actual content itself. I mean, could it be any more obvious that all you need to do is slap the word "zombie" on something to sell it? On top of that, moving forward with a film adaptation at this point in time kinda screams out Zombieland wanna-be. But then last week it was announced that Natalie Portman had signed on to star [1] in the movie, which instantly gave the project a little bit more credibility. This has been followed up by Pajiba [2], who claim to have the inside scoop that David O. Russell (Three Kings, »

Best of the Decade #12: District 9 (2009)

14 December 2009 8:57 AM, PST

You have to think twice when including 2009 films on a Best of Decade list, simply because not enough time has passed to evaluate whether these movies will truly be representative of the decade or if they will end up being forgotten in a few more years. In the case of District 9, however, I feel confident that this has already become a classic in its own right, and one that has left a sizable impact on the movie-making world. Peter Jackson started off the decade heading up what is easily one of the biggest (and also most successful) undertakings in history of cinema with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He has since transitioned to the role of mentor as well, using his status and resources to give new talent a shot at breaking into the industry. He handpicked Neill Blomkamp, previously known for his TV commercial work, to direct a Halo feature film. »

Leonardo DiCaprio to Star in Mel Gibson-Directed Viking Epic

14 December 2009 6:21 AM, PST

Mel Gibson has finally announced plans for his next gig behind the camera, and after seeing Apocalypto, I can honestly say I'm ready to follow him just about anywhere. Fortunately, this sounds like it is definitely in the same vein as most of Mel's previous directorial work. According to Variety [1], he will be teaming up with Leonardo DiCaprio for "an untitled period drama set in the world of Viking culture". Sold! The script for the film is being written by William Monahan (The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven), who also recently co-wrote Gibson's latest starring vehicle, Edge of Darkness. They are hoping to start shooting next fall, and the project will be financed independently, seeking distribution after the fact in order to avoid studio meddling. There have been a handful of Viking-related movies coming out lately, some of which were decent (Outlander) and some of which were not (Pathfinder, Severed Ways: »

Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Princess and the Frog is Invictus

14 December 2009 5:44 AM, PST

Disney took the box office crown over the weekend with The Princess and the Frog, a successful return to 2-D animation that certainly didn't do huge numbers, but still quietly earned the highest-grossing opening for an animated movie in December. The Blind Side continued its surprise success with another $15.5 million, taking its grand total past the $150 million mark. Clint Eastwood's Invictus had a somewhat lacklustre first weekend, earning just $9 million, while The Twilight Saga: New Moon and A Christmas Carol remained in the Top 5. Jason Reitman's Up in the Air just barely missed out on breaking the Top 10, accumulating $2.4 million on just 72 screens. 1. The Princess and the Frog -- $25M 2. The Blind Side -- $15.5M 3. Invictus -- $9.09M 4. The Twilight Saga: New Moon -- $8M 5. A Christmas Carol -- $6.87M 6. Brothers -- $5M 7. 2012 -- $4.4M 8. Old Dogs -- $4.4M 9. Armored -- $3.5M 10. Ninja Assassin -- $2.71M
