'Creature From the Black Lagoon' Gets New Director
18 hours ago
Universal's gestating remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon has tapped a new director to replace the outgoing Breck Eisner. And while many wondered if the reborn story of the Gill-Man would languish indefinitely, it turns out he'll probably be back to terrorize audiences once again (one way or another).
Carl Eric Rinsch, the commercials director, who was once a contender to direct the Alien prequel, and who recently signed on to direct the samurai adventure 47 Ronin for Universal, is in talks to shepherd Black Lagoon for the studio.
Gary Ross penned the script for the story that concerns a mythic monster who dwells in the Amazon, but the studio has reportedly gone back to the drawing board with the script; starting over entirely.
It almost seems as though within the onslaught of remakes headed our way, there's a bevy of sub-genres being reimagined as well. A good example is

Russell Crowe Kicks Ass in Ridley Scott's 'Robin Hood' Trailer!
The international trailer for Ridley Scott's Robin Hood has broken cover thanks to ComingSoon.net and Tribute.ca…and you can watch the ComingSoon version using the embedded player at the bottom of this page.
The film looks solid, like so many of Scott's other period pieces; I'm thinking in particular of Gladiator and the truly magnificent Kingdom of Heaven.
At 72, Scott is an inspiration to the rest of us young whippersnappers—he still cranks out the occasional epic magnum opus, and this looks to be just that.
Meanwhile, the Courier-Mail has debuted eight new photos from the film, including the one to your left, and the one below.
Here's the story's synopsis (as if most of us couldn't have guessed much of it):
In 13th century England, Robin Hood (Russell Crowe) and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against

Trailer Made: 'Nine' Seduces
All that is discernible about Nine from the press and the magazine covers is that it is going to be explosive eye candy crammed with A-listers and Academy-Award winners. They sing, they dance, but what about? It doesn’t matter. Marketing gurus know we will pay to just see one of these extraordinary actors in a film, let alone all of them at once!
But what is the film really about? Well, it’s all there in the trailer.
First, it’s about serious cinema. The trailer welcomes us to the world of the film (and filmmaking) with a serious, heavy ringing of bells and a cinematic shot of a man, deep in thought, entering a dark theater from the bright light outside. We know this will be about filmmaking when we hear Judi Dench’s comic description of a director then see Daniel Day Lewis crestfallen on an empty

A Great Day for America: Celebrating Craig Ferguson's 1000th Episode
19 hours ago
Scottish-born comedian Craig Ferguson is preparing to celebrate the 1000th episode of CBS' The Late Late Show later tonight (or is that early tomorrow morning?), and to commemorate the auspicious occasion we've decided to offer up a couple of very funny videos in this article that showcase the late night host and comedian at his [almost] best.
Ferguson took over the show from Craig Kilborn in 2005 and it's been a straight up rise to the top ever since, with most polls voting Ferguson the best late night talk show host in either the 11:30pm or 12:30am time slot.
Expect Tuesday's episode to be raucous and typical of Ferguson's irreverent, perspicacious delivery. "Those incorrigible bags o' fun, 'The Late Late Show' puppets, will take over the show for the 1000th episode," CBS said in a news release.
"Wavy, the crocodile puppet, will serve as the host of the

Can You Picture Tobey Maguire as a Hobbit?
Well, this takes care of our 'Hobbit' and 'Spider-Man' rumors of the day, all in one fell swoop.
According to Latino Review, Creative Artists Agency and the producers of the upcoming 'Hobbit' films are in the early stages of talks with Tobey Maguire to play Bilbo Baggins. The deal would ensure a big name star to headline Guillermo del Toro’s films, which will likely be expensive.
A number of other actors, including James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe, were rumored to be in contention to the role. However, Peter Jackson dismissed the McAvoy rumor, and Radcliffe reportedly said thanks, but no thanks. Maguire, on the other hand, supposedly tipped his hand during an interview for his new film Brothers.
When asked which director he’d like to work with next, Maguire is said to have replied, "Guillermo del Toro", adding, "We may have something here in the near future."
But wait,

What.s Next For Cameron - Shooting in Outer Space, Maybe?
It’s got all the suspense and drama of a James Cameron film: The story of Cameron’s real-life quest to go into outer space.
Apparently, the Avatar and Terminator director has been interested in visiting space for a while, and got about halfway there back in the late '90s/early '00s. Speaking to MTV, Cameron said he had been working with Nasa on a joint mission to the International Space Station; unfortunately, that got sidetracked by a number of delays, including a certain terrorist attack.
"I was going to go up and work on the International Space Station with our 3-D cameras," Cameron said. "I was pushing for something in the 30 day range and they were pushing for something in the 10 to 15 day range. We got partway down the road on that and, it was interesting, we were testing our 3-D cameras at the Titanic wreck site and September 11 happened.

New 'Daybreakers' Street Posters
14 December 2009 9:50 AM, PST
If you're getting excited about the new Daybreakers vampire flick — and we can think of one writer on staff who probably is — then you'll want to feast (sorry) your eyes on the two below street posters going up in Los Angeles for the Lionsgate film. Both are courtesy of ShockTillYouDrop.com.
Ethan Hawke plays Edward Dalton, a researcher in the year 2019, in which an unknown plague has transformed the world's population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race.
Directed by the Spierig brothers, Daybreakers also stars Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan, Michael Dorman, Vince Colosimo, Isabel Lucas and Sam Neill.
It's a great cast, and an interesting premise that puts a new spin

Allison Mack, Alessandro Juliani Help 'Riese' Point TV in New Direction
14 December 2009 9:45 AM, PST
When the Syfy show Sanctuary first started out, it did so as a made-for-the-web, paid downloadable series, sans network. The Vancouver-produced program, created by writer/producer Damon Kindler and exec produced by 'Stargate' veteran Amanda Tapping (also the show's star), generated plenty of positive buzz across the Interwebs, and before long Syfy (then Sci Fi Channel) came a-calling.
Some argued that the producers had "sold out" to a network, abandoning the pioneering spirit which they had first embraced…while others quickly realized that the model of creating a hit on the web might just be one way for new projects to get the attention of the old media guard. They were right, and it did.
Sanctuary was just the first salvo, it seems. The current economic downturn, combined with a strengthening Canadian dollar, may have slowed production in Vancouver, but it's galvanized the city's stalwart journeyman industry, forging it from

Another 'Iron Man 2' 'Clue' Shows Up Online
14 December 2009 9:40 AM, PST
Last Thursday, SuperHeroHype unveiled what appears to be an early clue of some sort in connection with Iron Man 2, in the form of a newspaper clipping. The edges of that clipping were burned and frayed and the article discussed Tony Stark's revelation about being Iron Man. So what is the clue, you may wonder? Everyone is wondering the same thing.
Now, the folks over at ScreenRant have posted a second clue. You can view it below. ScreenRant have been good enough to type out the full text of the article for your convenience, and we'll let you click over to their site to read it.
Clearly, this is all part of a viral campaign for Iron Man 2 that Paramount has launched, but thus far it's pretty cryptic. Expect more clues in the weeks to come; all part of a puzzle that someone(s) will eventually start to unravel,

Gatt To Play 'Thor' Baddie
14 December 2009 9:35 AM, PST
English thespian and genre film mainstay Joseph Gatt has landed a role in Thor, and it’s most likely as a villain.
According to Coventry Telegraph's The Geek Files, Gatt will probably be playing Skurge the Executioner, a superhuman warrior in Marvel Comics’ Thor who will be sent by Loki to destroy the titular character. In the books, Skurge is often manipulated by Enchantress, another Thor arch-nemesis, and that is likely to be the same in the film.
We use "likely" and "probably" about Gatt’s role since the actor himself has not revealed what part he’ll be playing: His official website only says, "Currently, Gatt is prepping for his most prominent job to date: a (secret) role in the forthcoming Marvel Studios film Thor, slated for release in 2011."
Gatt played the giant Atlas in the TV version of Jason and the Argonauts, which aired in 2000, and had a

Updated: Syfy Renews 'Sanctuary' and 'Stargate Universe'
14 December 2009 9:33 AM, PST
Congratulations are in order to the makers of Sgu: Stargate Universe and Sanctuary. Both Vancouver-shot shows have been renewed for another year, Syfy announced yesterday. That news will be a brilliant Christmas present to the cast and crew of these series, which have just gone on winter break.
Sanctuary's renewal for a third season of 20 episodes can be considered a tremendous achievement by its production team, which includes creator, writer and executive producer Damian Kindler, executive producer and star Amanda Tapping and executive producer, writer and director Martin Wood. The show began life in 2007 as an Internet series. Although it was critically praised and popular in that medium, the project proved to not be financially viable. However, it was picked up as a series by The Movie Network in Canada and Syfy in the United States and has continued to impress throughout its first and second seasons.
In Sanctuary Tapping plays Dr.

'Twilight', or Toothless in Transylvania
13 December 2009 9:25 PM, PST
I've had it. I've had it with the weak-ass vampires of 'Twilight', True Blood, and Interview with a Vampire.
I remember when vampires used to be freaking scary. Lugosi, Lee. Back then, they'd just as soon rip your throat open and chew on your arteries as…um, turn into a bat and sh*t on your head. Nowadays, cinematic vampires all look like pasty-faced Harlequin Romance rejects trying to look fashionably anemic. This new breed of vampire-lite is all but keeping me from wanting to yank their ginch over their heads and smack them silly with a whiffle bat (in my book, a far more effective way of dispatching the undead than the ol' crosses and stakes routine).
Back in early November, CinemaSpy published a story that catalogued the 20 sexiest male vampires of all time. I damn near retched.
Look, I'm a guy, and let me say once and for

Mel Gibson to Helm Viking Adventure Featuring Leonardo DiCaprio
13 December 2009 9:20 PM, PST
Mel Gibson is preparing to direct Leonardo DiCaprio in an untitled period drama about Viking culture to be written by William Monahan, with lensing slated to begin in the fall of 2010.
Variety reports that DiCaprio, who has long been fascinated by Viking culture, will play one in a storyline that will be as unsparing as Gibson's other period directing efforts, Braveheart, The Passion of The Christ and Apocalypto.
"This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry's finest cinematic talent, and I am just over the moon to be making this film with Mel, Leo and Bill," producer Graham King said.
The connective tissue is King, says the trade. Which we take to mean will tell the story of a Viking king...or at least feature one prominently.
The last big screen Viking adventure I remember — not counting last year's Outlander — was The 13th Warrior, the 1999 adventure

Paramount Pictures has released a new photo of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) from Iron Man 2. You can check it out directly below.
In the new film, Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, must contend with rival multibillionaire businessman Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), a fast-talking weapons manufacturer out to usurp Stark, while at the same time battling the Russian Vanko, who has created his own battle-suit that shoots whip-like energy beams. Hammer and Whiplash join forces to take Tony Stark down.
Meanwhile, Stark's mysterious new assistant, Natasha, who has an alter ego of her own, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) complicates his life further, and also sparks romantic tension between Stark and former assistant Pepper Potts, who's been promoted to CEO of Stark Industries.
Directed by Jon Favreau, Iron Man 2 opens in theaters on May 7, 2010.

A 'Transformers 3' Script Leaks Online
13 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST
The website tformers.com has posted the latest in a lineage of "leaked" scripts that may be real, or nothing more than a clever disinformation campaign designed to confuse Internet journalists and fans alike.
This script, which you can read in pdf form by clicking here, was apparently written by Ehren Krueger on November 24. Now ordinarily we'd warn you about spoilers below, but since we're not fully convinced that this is anything more than a clever fabrication to throw folks of the scent of the real story (though admittedly it is a bit early to be employing such tactics...hmmm...), we're going to go ahead and say: *Spoiler Alert*
In the script, the Autobots and Decepticons accidentally thrown back in time after a space battle. They find themselves on Earth in the year 1982, whereupon Starscream kills off Megatron in order to set in motion a master-plan he has, which we
