Watch and Discuss: The Best Trailers of the Season
5 November 2009 2:00 AM, PST
A still from Tom Ford's directorial debut, A Single Man. The nice thing about the 'serious' season of cinema is that the trailer-house wizards get a chance to make some stunning works of art - all for the sake of getting more people to check out (hopefully) Oscar-friendly movies. I've seen the trailer for Precious a bunch, and each time I watch it, I'm invevitably weeping. That's one sign of a good trailer (even if you already feel like you've seen the film). One excellent trend in the world of trailers are the impressionistic, music-driven pieces. They don't give the whole film away; rather, they tie the images to a song or a rhythm, hypnotizing you into, hopefully, checking the film out. Upcoming films like A Single Man (Tom Ford's directorial debut, about a day in the life of a character played by Colin Firth) and Nine (the all singing »

Films You Should See: Wings of Desire
4 November 2009 2:00 AM, PST
Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin), Wim Wenders' lyrical hymn to angels over Berlin, is one of the great movies about human empathy. In Wenders' wreck of a Berlin, split in two by the graffiti-covered Berlin Wall, angels are the great sympathizers. Looming in Henri Alekan's silvery black-and-white shots, Damiel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto Sander) have spent eternity in Berlin, clad in long black trenchcoats, strolling, wandering around the crumbling city, serving witness to the city's people. And that is, simply, what they do: they bear witness. Alekan's gentle, precise camera slowly drifts throughout the city, stopping at a circus, the film set for a schlocky Nazi drama, through the windows of an apartment, the exhausted faces of the people on the train, the cacophony of thoughts in the library. Throughout it all, the history and hurt of Berlin's past and present weighs on the characters. »

The End of the World As We Know It
3 November 2009 1:57 AM, PST
Michael Ruppert Though not technically a horror film, Collapse, the latest film from director Chris Smith (The Yes Men, American Movie) may just scare you to pieces with its doomsday scenario. In this straight interview documentary - Errol Morris-style - Smith's subject is Michael Ruppert, a former Lapd cop who believes that the current economic climate is a sign that industrial civilization is on the precipice of a complete meltdown. Ruppert has been on the fringe for decades, working as an independent reporter who predicted the financial collapse in his self-published newsletter. (You can read his current blog here.) While it's easy to initially dismiss him as a conspiracy theorist, his no-notes-needed explanations and predictions are riveting. As we become entranced by Ruppert's chain-smoking, articulate predictions of doom, we might begin to question longheld beliefs about the taken-for-granted infrastructure we trust to keep the world running smoothly.
