Everybody's Fine UK Poster
18 December 2009 6:35 AM, PST
It landed a Golden Globe nomination just the other day for its Paul McCartney-scribed theme tune, and now here's a poster to give you a better look at Everybody's Fine, the Robert De Niro-starring family drama. And what's nice about this one is that the tone of the poster resembles the tone of the film, unlike the rather dishonest and insanely cheery-looking Us version. That's not to say that this is a total downer, just rather more reserved than the Us promo would have you believe. The story sees De Niro's widower, Frank, pay a surprise visit to each of his grown-up children to see how they're getting along (we hope the title isn't a spoiler). The kids include Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale, and they have some surprises in store for their old manEverybody's Fine is out on February 19 in the UK.

Hit-Girl Stars In New Kick-Ass Poster
18 December 2009 2:33 AM, PST
Kick-Ass comes out in April, and from everything we've seen is set to be one of the films of next year: smart, funny and very, very wrong. And the character in the film who's really going to get the Daily Mail all riled up is Hit Girl, the 11 year-old killer with a nice line in cursing.Played by Chloe Moretz, Hit-Girl and her adoring Papa Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) train incessantly to hone their abilities and become formidable assassins. No, that's not on the national curriculum and yes, it does involve missing a little school.Click the image above for hi-res version on IGNHit-Girl's set to become one of the most iconic characters of 2010, so watch out for her when Kick-Ass is finally released on April 2 here in the UK, and two weeks later in the Us. It also stars Aaron Johnson and Mark Strong, and is of course directed by Matthew Vaughn.

Dan O'Bannon 1946-2009
17 December 2009 11:24 PM, PST
Dan O'Bannon, the sci-fi and horror screenwriter behind some of the genres' most recognisable titles, has died in Los Angeles following a short illness. He was 63.A USC graduate in the same year as John Carpenter, O'Bannon was instrumental in Carpenter's cracking (and crackpot) first feature Dark Star, serving as co-writer, FX supervisor, production designer and editor, and playing Sgt Pinback (who turns out not to be Sgt Pinback at all). O'Bannon is the one who chases the beachball alien all over the spaceship; an idea that would sort of resurface later...O'Bannon did some FX work on Star Wars in 1977, but is best known for kickstarting a different franchise. While authorship of Alien as we know it today is down to a number of people, there's no question that O'Bannon's Star Beast screenplay set the ball rolling, and he brought many of his colleagues from Alejandro Jodorowsky's aborted Dune to the project.

First Class Writer For X-Men
17 December 2009 10:49 PM, PST
As reported yesterday, director Bryan Singer will be returning to the X-Men fold with origins story First Class, based on the limited comics series by Jeff Parker. The Hollywood Reporter has now also announced the film's screenwriter, and it's Jamie Moss.Something of an unknown quantity, Moss has rarely appeared on our radar before: as writer of the quite-good Keanu cop thriller Street Kings, the possible Ron Howard Iraq war project Last Man Home, and as the guy who was replaced by Shutter Island's Laeta Kalogridis for the in-development Dreamworks re-jig of Ghost in the Shell. All swings and roundabouts and par for the course in Hollywood terms though: Moss will himself be replacing The Oc's Josh Schwartz on what seems to be a page-one First Class restart. Poor Josh. He was even offered the director's chair at one point. The story focuses on the early days of the Xavier School For the Gifted,

Shrek Forever After Teaser Arrives
17 December 2009 10:17 PM, PST
The first teaser trailer has arrived for what might just be the final Shrek outing, Forever After (though you'll excuse us if we say we'll believe that when we see it). In the fourth outing for the fairytale spoof adventure, Shrek is seemingly tired of his domesticated life with wife Fiona and the kids, and pines for a time when his mere presence could send villagers scattering. But when he strikes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to try to regain his mojo, the beardy trickster makes his life magically hell, transporting him to a version of Far Far Away where he never existed. There, he finds Donkey reduced to cart duty, Puss In Boots as a lazy slob and Rumpelstiltskin ruling the place. Yes, Shrek is going all It's A Wonderful Life. Can he rescue his kingdom? What do you think?Take a look at the trailer over at Apple and

Laurence Fishburne Battling Predators
17 December 2009 10:15 PM, PST
Hope his kung fu is up to scratch - Laurence Fishburne has joined the cast of Nimrod Antal's Predators. After visiting the set of the new, Robert Rodriguqez-produced take on the be-dreadlocked alien hunters, the lads at Shock 'Till You Drop have learned that Morpheus himself is joining the cast to play a tough guy named Roland. It's perhaps less of a shock given that Fishburne and Antal just worked together on Armored, and that Larry is the sort of bloke you'd want around if you were battling the warrior race. He'll star alongside the likes of Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Alice Braga and The Shield's WAlton Goggins. We love the little plot description at the end of the story: "They play a disparate group of people who land on the Predator home planet only to discover 'unspeakable horrors.'" And here we were thinking that the

Taylor Lautner Off To Cancun
17 December 2009 10:14 PM, PST
Oh, look… Taylor Lautner's in demand again. What a shocker. Yes, while Twilight's shirt-eschewing were-hunk was the focus of speculation that Paramount was considering him as Max Steel, he's also being courted by Summit Entertainment, which understandably wants to keep using one of the elements that made New Moon such a big success. The company has nabbed action spec script Cancun, written by Eric Champnella and Grant Thompson, with plans to make it into a starring vehicle for Lautner. And the story? A college lad heads to the Mexican holiday hotspot with a girl, who promptly gets herself kidnapped by a drug cartel. So careless, some ladies. Lautner's character is forced to break out some action chops and utilize his fancy martial arts skills (which the actor was only to happy to show off on Saturday Night Live this past weekend) to rescue her. There's no word on exactly when it'll shoot,

Peter Segal May Join Neighborhood Watch
17 December 2009 10:13 PM, PST
Earlier this year, Fox suffered a blow to its plans to make weird comedy Neighborhood Watch when director David Dobkin and star Will Ferrell unexpectedly dropped out. Now, however, the studio might just have a back-up plan, at least for behind the camera, and it's thanks to the Get Smart sequel being shoved back by Warners. That means Peter Segal is likely abatable to take over the reins on Watch, which finds a city dweller moving to the suburbs and joining the local neighbourhood watch program, only to discover a massive and (minor spoiler) vaguely supernatural conspiracy. But even if Segal does agree to work on Jared Stern's script, Fox will still need to find a star. Hey, based on the look of The Tooth Fairy trailer, Dwayne Johnson will star in just about anything these days. Why not a reunion with his Get Smart director?

Paramount Plans Doc Holliday Film
17 December 2009 10:12 PM, PST
Like a zombie that just won't stay down, the Western is looking to make another return. Paramount is betting that it can revive the genre as a Pirates Of The Caribbean-style tentpole franchise thanks to an action adventure pitch called The Further Adventures of Doc Holliday. There are no plot details yet, but with that name in the title, you know it will involve the legendary, tuberculosis-ridden gunslinger John Henry "Doc" Holliday, a man still best known for his friendship with fellow bullet-flinger Wyatt Earp and his involvement in the Gunfight at the Ok Corral. Many of you might also remember him from the likes of 1993's Tombstone, where Val Kilmer played him with typically quirky flare, or when Dennis Quaid took on the role in the following year's Wyatt Earp. He's certainly a juicy character for any Johnny Depp-alike character actor looking to make a studio breakthrough, and with Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing,

Warners Tempts Carell With New Comedy
17 December 2009 10:11 PM, PST
As seems to be the norm these days, Steve Carell is in heavy demand. Just yesterday we reported on the Mail Order Groom comedy he's pondering as a likely reunion with Date Night's Tina Fey (and that film is still awaiting release). And now Warners - with whom he has a development deal anyway - is trying to woo him with a comedy pitch.Given that his moviemaking time is limited thanks to his commitments to The Office, he's a picky man, so the studio has splashed out $2 million to buy an untitled spec written by Cars scribe Dan Fogelman. There aren't that many details about the possible pic, but according to Variety, it's a Love Actually-style blend of the bitter and the sweet about a man dealing with a marital crisis and attempting to restore his relationship with his kids.Fogelman apparently wrote the thing with Carell

The Runaways Teaser Now Online
17 December 2009 10:01 PM, PST
It's a chilly one this morning, and what better way to warm the cockles of your heart than to rawk out with The Runaways teaser, now online over at MTV.com. Yes, now we get the chance to see Kristen Stewart's horrifying Joan Jett haircut in action, and it's every bit as mullety as you'd expect. The film, for those of you not au fait with your rock history, is the story of girl rockers The Runaways, led by co-founder and rhythm guitarist Joan Jett (Stewart), drummer Sandy West (Stella Maeve) and singer Cherrie Currie (Dakota Fanning). Producer Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) introduced the band to one another and in the male-dominated world of 1970s rock their group enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame but found themselves unprepared to deal with it, with Currie in particular unable to deal with the Beatle-mania like response of fans on a 1977 trip to Japan.

Princess And The Frog UK Poster
17 December 2009 4:00 AM, PST
Disney's return to the fairytale, The Princess and the Frog, comes out here on February 5, but in case you can't wait until then, here's a spiffy new poster from the film to tide you over, showing all the major characters and showcasing the gorgeous animation. For those of you who haven't seen it yet or toured around Walt Disney Animation Studios learning all about it (ahem), here's a handy guide to the characters. In the centre is Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), hard-working waitress with a dream of opening her own restaurant. On her palm is the froggy form of Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos), who got himself trans-frog-rified by voodoo man Dr Facilier (Keith David), top right. On the left is voodoo lady Mama Odie (Jenifer Lewis) and her snake Juju, alongside Cajun firefly Ray (Jim Cummings), and that's trumpet-playing alligator Louis (Michael-Leon Wooley) along the bottom. It's all directed by Ron Clements and John Musker,

New Iron Man 2 Trailer Arrives
17 December 2009 12:04 AM, PST
Tony Stark is back, folks. The new trailer for Iron Man 2 has arrived in glorious high definition and it's loaded down with a blend of footage we've experienced before (glances at Mickey Rourke's Whiplash and the Senate hearing scene shown at Comic-Con) to all-new action.Fans of the first movie should have a serious geek-gasm over some of what's shown here and everyone else will at least get a thrill at seeing that the irreverential, character-stocked feeling of the original seems to be fully on display here.Frankly, we need say no more* - hit play below and indulge yourself.*Except for: War Machine! It's a tiny glimpse, but it's awesome.

Second Titans Trailer Arrives
16 December 2009 11:58 PM, PST
The giant scorpions are back, but this time they're slower. The second trailer for Louis Letterier's Clash of the Titans remake, starring Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Arterton, gives itself fractionally more breathing space than the first (at least to start with). It'll be playing in theatres before Avatar. There are better glimpses of some of the monsters (Medusa among them), a few seconds of Mads Mikkelson, "Titans! Will! Clash!" has been replaced with "Damn! The! Gods!", and there's more dialogue than before, including the legendary "Release the Kraken!" from Neeson. That had to be as daunting a line as "Bond, James Bond" but, by Zeus, it looks like he's cracked it.The raison d'etre for this trailer would appear to be the big reveal of the Kraken itself, which looks rather like the Cloverfield beast to our eyes. So that's where it came from. It swam

Mark Strong Talks John Carter
16 December 2009 11:00 PM, PST
Mark Strong, in an enviable burst of big-budget activity, is Lord Blackwood in the imminently upcoming Sherlock Holmes (his third film for Guy Ritchie) and Sir Godfrey in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood (his second film for Sir Ridders). And according to a lengthy interview over at Collider, his role in Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars is also not insignificant.Strong is playing Matai Shang, a heavyweight player in Edgar Rice Burroughs' series of novels come book three, Warlord of Mars. Shang rules a race called the Ferns who, says Strong, "exist over and above the Martians like Olympian gods. People aren't sure they exist, but they do! They travel round keeping order: Shang is basically a Master of the Universe."Strong has seen treatments for parts 2 and 3 of Stanton's projected trilogy, and says Shang "comes into his own during the second half of the current movie,

DreamWorks To Adapt War Horse
16 December 2009 10:24 PM, PST
It was the basis for one of the most buzzed about plays in London over the last few years, and now Michael Morpurgo's War Horse has been optioned for the big screen by DreamWorks, with Billy Elliot's Lee Hall set to write the screenplay.Definitely one for the horsey set, this sees a farm horse called Joey sold to the British cavalry early in World War I and shipped off to the battlefields, much against the wishes of his young owner Albert. Joey is captured by the Germans and used by them as well, seeing the War from both sides but unaffected by nationalism, while Albert - too young to enlist - sets off on a rescue mission. The film will be produced by the all-star team of Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Revel Guest, which has got to be a good sign for War Horse.

Will Steve Carell Be A Mail Order Groom?
16 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST
Empire had a chance to gab with Steve Carell recently (we can't tell you why or where just yet, unfortunately) and, when asked about future plans, dropped word that he was looking to reunite with Date Night co-star Tina Fey. Now it looks like they're close to making it official: the Office man and 30 Rock goddess are considering signing up to star in Mail Order Groom for Warners. The basic concept follows a naive single American woman who, when she can't find love at home, ends up with a husband purchased in Eastern Europe, who she flies home to the Us. Hilarity, we're sure, then ensues.Given that the basic concept was partly dreamt up by Fey's husband, Jeff Richmond, alongside Robert Carlock and Scott Silveri, it's entirely possible she'll agree to sign on. A fresh draft of the script is currently being bashed out by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.

Bryan Singer Back To X-Men
16 December 2009 9:59 PM, PST
When Empire sat down with X-franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently, she revealed that young mutant pic X-Men: First Class was bubbling along nicely, with a script by The Oc/Chuck creatorJosh Schwartz. Now it would appear that it also has a director, in the form of Bryan Singer.Given his long history with the X-Men movies, Singer has been mooted as the likely First Class directing choice for a while now, but he confirmed that he was all set for the film at the Los Angeles premiere of Avatar.Talking to MySpace on the red carpet, Singer said, "I'm ramping up to do a movie called Jack The Giant Killer at Warner Bros, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men: First Class Origins picture, which is kind of cool. I'm very excited." Of course, Marvel has yet to officially confirm anything, but if you're not going to believe Singer,

Wild Hogs Sequel Pulled Over By Disney
16 December 2009 9:58 PM, PST
We're starting to wonder if recently promoted Disney studio boss Rich Ross carries a scythe around with him, given that he's just sent another developing film off into the afterlife. The latest victim? Wild Hogs 2: Bachelor Ride. The sequel to 2007's unlikely hit was already gunning its engine to start shooting next year with John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence and William H Macy all in negotiations to reprise their roles as middle aged friends who become biker buddies.Disney had even ordered the first draft of the script, from original writer Brad Copeland, with new versions underway. While no one at the studio is talking about exactly why it was shut down, a big part of it had to be the poor performance of the Travolta/Robin Williams comedy Old Dogs, which flopped into Us cinemas last month. This marks the third film Ross has put away, following

Rene Russo Joins Thor

Kenneth Branagh's Thor cast just can't stop growing - or becoming more interesting with every new addition. The latest making the trip to Asgard is Rene Russo, who is set to play Frigga (stop sniggering at the back, there!)Frigga (look, we're warning you) is the wife of Norse god Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and mother both both our hero (Chris Hemsworth) and his evil brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston). She'll probably be rather upset when her son is banished from Asgard for reigniting an ancient war, but somewhat pleased when he learns what it takes to be a hero while stepping up to stop Loki invading Earth.Branagh kicks off shooting on Marvel's latest next month with a release date set for May 2011.
