The movie inspirations behind my vampire Halloween costume
30 October 2009 6:30 AM, PDT
Since Halloween is only one day away I thought it would be cool to share my inspirations for my costume this year in our blog. I’m Ella, you might recognise me from the Team Boxwish Quizzed blogs, and I’m flying solo today to give you an insight into my movie-inspired Halloween costume. Since vampires are literally everywhere this year (and I did zombie last year – see pictured above) I thought I’d try it for myself. So I got a few DVDs to brush up on the blood-sucking creatures and started planning my outfit and first up was, of course, the sophisticated vamps of Twilight. »
Seriously scary movie-inspired Halloween pumpkins
30 October 2009 6:03 AM, PDT
A week ago, we first started planning how to turn the humble pumpkin into a Jack-o’-Lantern to be admired. Our source of inspiration was the fantastic website ZombiePumpkins.com (see Related Content, right), which, with 213 patterns (they’ve added two since we reported on them) brings together a multitude of movie characters, from heroes to villains and even with special categories such as the one focusing on Tim Burton films. And now we’ve found another top resource for all of you hoping to get knife-happy with your pumpkin, introducing the dastardly designs at Walyou. »
eBay find: Lightsaber autographed by Star Wars stars
30 October 2009 4:56 AM, PDT
With just one sleep until Halloween it’s a bit late to bid on movie-inspired costumes on eBay, and so we’re waving a fond farewell to fancy dress ensembles in our weekly eBay blog post. Instead we’ve found a real treat that is sure to excite pop culture vultures, sci-fi fans and the army of Star Wars lovers around the world – a master replica of the lightsaber wielded by Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in the first three instalments of the celebrated space saga signed by Star Wars luminaries. It’s never too early to start a Christmas list and this has certainly jumped to the top of ours. »
Team Boxwish quizzed: What are your plans for Halloween?
30 October 2009 3:47 AM, PDT
One day to go until the spookiest night of the year and here at Boxwish, we’ve been full of ideas for Halloween parties. From fancy dress costumes (still not got one? Check these out, some of them offer last-minute deliveries) to creepy clothing, from horrifying home décor to scary soundtracks and sleepover suggestions to party games and now we’re turning the spotlight on us. It’s a mixed bag, some of us truly entering into the fun and games, heading out to Halloween parties and getting dressed up, while for others it’s all about a quiet night in and some scary films. We’ve even gotten the party started early today at Boxwish HQ, with many of us dressed accordingly (plenty of black and red and the odd superhero reference) and are busy fine tuning our jukebox of terrifying tunes to blast later this afternoon. But what about tomorrow? »
Cinema release inspirations including Michael Jackson's This Is It
30 October 2009 2:49 AM, PDT
Happy Halloween Boxwishers! Okay, so we’re a day out, but it never hurts to get in the spooky spirit early. Not that you’d really know that we’re only hours away from All Hallows’ Eve from this week’s cinema releases. Music maestros are catered for with Michael Jackson’s This Is It, animation aficionados get 9 and for drama lovers there’s the critically acclaimed An Education, but nothing new for those looking for frights. So if you’re heading out for some Saturday night scares you might have to rely on past releases Saw VI, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant and Zombieland. But on to the new crop… »
Top ten creepy clothing
29 October 2009 8:24 AM, PDT
Want to get into the spooky spirit this Halloween without getting too carried away? Well, look no further than our movie masks and creepy clothing. They both make a fantastic compromise to fancy dress, providing the ideal option for those too self-conscious to go the whole hog or don’t have enough time to assemble an entire outfit. Their low maintenance charms can also be the perfect finishing touch to an outfit, and, for those of us watching the pennies, they’re less bruising to the bank balance than top-to-toe costumes. We’ve chosen ten of the best, referencing vicious villains and noble heroes, that we think are sure to scare, amuse and delight come fright night. »
Blog celebrates the quirky fashions of the Tenenbaums
29 October 2009 7:06 AM, PDT
Dressing as movie characters can often mean going glam. Men donning tuxedos to emulate the sophistication of James Bond or ladies stepping into the high heels and gorgeous gowns of evening wear elegance – but not this lot. The fantastically titled blog, Tenenbaum Fail, invites people to submit pictures of themselves dressed as some of the most bizarrely dressed folks from recent cinema – the eccentric Tenenbaum clan from Wes Anderson cult comedy, The Royal Tenenbaums. And with the latest Anderson slice of quirkiness, Fantastic Mr Fox currently at cinemas and that fancy dress bastion, Halloween but days away, we’re taking a few style tips from this most disfunctional of film families. »
Gadget of the week: BlackBerry 8700 Smartphone from Funny Games
29 October 2009 6:02 AM, PDT
Be warned sensitive Boxwishers – there’s very little to tickle your funny bone in Funny Games. The shot-for-shot remake of the 1997 German film of the same name sees the domestic bliss enjoyed by George (Tim Roth), his wife Anne (Naomi Watts) and their young son, Georgie shattered when a holiday to their lake house is interrupted by two psychopathic strangers. It’s certainly not light viewing, but makes an unusual spin on the modern horror thriller, and so, with Halloween looming, we’re celebrating the movie by naming its BlackBerry 8700 Smartphone as our gadget of the week. »
Is notorious Broadway flop, Carrie being resurrected?
29 October 2009 5:13 AM, PDT
There have been a number of screen to stage adaptations that have sunk like stones in recent months. Dolly Parton’s re-working of Nine to Five lasted only five months on the Great White Way, the London production of Gone With the Wind was booed out of the West End after a mere 79 shows and even those Wild Cats found little love when performing Down Under with High School Musical dumped earlier than planned. But hoping to reverse this trend are celebrated producers Jeffery Seller and Kevin McCollum who are planning a revival of the much-mocked musical version of Carrie. »

Miley Cyrus talks Sex and the City 2 fashions
29 October 2009 4:05 AM, PDT
It’s still months and months away, but it seems that we just can’t get enough of the fashions of Sex and the City 2. Already expectations are high for the follow-up to last year’s summer smash and, with revelations from the movie’s cast, it’s no wonder appetites are being well and truly whetted. Just yesterday, we told you about Kristin Davis’s admission that there are fewer costumes in the sequel (see Related Content, right), and now teen star, Miley Cyrus, who will be making a cameo in the film as herself at a red carpet bash, has been spilling the style secrets. »

Vitamin Water launches The Twilight Saga: New Moon advert
28 October 2009 8:00 AM, PDT
Earlier in the year we told you about the tie-in Burger King were planning with The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which is due to launch in restaurants on 16th November. As part of a promotion Bk will be giving away vouchers for retail outlets, New Moon merchandise offers and collectible cards with Bk Burger Shots six-pack meals. It might seem strange to associate a fast food chain with creatures that don’t eat but we thought the wolf pack might appreciate the burgers. However, it seems there’s a contender for strangest New Moon tie-in as Vitamin Water has just launched a vamp-themed TV advert and Facebook page. »
Fashion fix of the week: Casio G-Shock DW6600 watch from Resident Evil: Extinction
28 October 2009 6:04 AM, PDT
Post-apocalyptic fashion is often surprisingly smart in the stylish world of cinema. There’s no need to make do in battered rags or cardboard on your feet, as those meticulous movie folk still manage to flaunt cool clobber regardless of the sad state of the world. And leading the charge is Nurse Betty (played by R’n’B singing star Ashanti), one of the survivors of the nasty T-virus in Resident Evil: Extinction. In this third instalment of the video game film franchise, the plucky medic zooms into focus on our style-o-meter (fictional, but nonetheless a great idea, don’t you think?) with her Casio G-Shock DW6600 watch. And so we continue the Halloween theme that has pervaded our recent fashion fixes, by naming it this week’s entry. »
The weirdest Star Wars-inspired Halloween costume idea Ever
28 October 2009 5:48 AM, PDT
We try not to be too definitive when delving into our treasure trove of movie-inspired fan-made goodies. From birthday cakes to doll’s outfits, weddings to artwork, we’ve loved and admired each and every one that’s come our way as they are all testament to the inspirational quality of film; and so we’re usually loathe to compare efforts and announce one better, worse or stranger than the others. We say usually. But today we’ve stumbled upon one that we think is pretty much king of the castle, if that castle were to be wonky, inside out and made of wool. Yes, this is our contender for weirdest movie inspiration – a Star Wars fancy dress costume that needs (gulp) an amputee to help complete it. We told you it was strange… »
Halloween party time: Top ten scary movie soundtracks
28 October 2009 4:18 AM, PDT
There are many ways to scare someone. However when it comes to full-on frights for Halloween the power of music shouldn’t be underestimated and ruling the roast of terrifying tunes is movie music. Spooky soundtracks and scores have long sent a shiver up the collective spine, a few discordant chords here and there capable of transforming an innocent-looking scene into one of dread and fear. And over the years, there have been numerous contenders for scariest screen music and we’ve rounded up ten top contenders that are guaranteed to create a noisy nightmare for your party guests. And if these foolproof soundtracks don’t work, just throw on the Titanic CD. Celine Dion always has them howling! »
Kristin Davis plays down fashions in Sex and the City 2
28 October 2009 3:57 AM, PDT
In Sex and the City, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) theorises that “Women come to New York for the two L’s: Labels and love,” and likewise that neatly sums up some of the charm of Satc, but what if one of them is a bit lacking? There’s been much speculation about the extent high fashion will play in next year’s much-hyped sequel to the 2008 hit, Sex and the City 2, with costume designer Patricia Field revealing that the clothes will be more fun to offset the gloom and doom of the economic recession (see Related Content, right), and Kristin Davis, who stars as park avenue princess Charlotte, has weighed in on the matter with news that might upset fashionistas. »

28 October 2009 2:48 AM, PDT

If you are indeed partying like it’s 1999, why not check out our one-stop shop for all things Halloween, helping you find that perfect last-minute costume or getting inspiration for some frightening food or creepy cocktails? Or, if you’re going more low-key with your spooky celebrations, chances are you might be watching a horror movie and they don’t come much terrifying than The Shining, as the Stanley Kubrick classic has been voted the scariest film of all time in a poll by TotalScifiOnline.com. »
Auto of the Week: 2000 Ford Focus from Drag Me To Hell
27 October 2009 8:30 AM, PDT
When director Sam Raimi decided to take on the Spider-Man films he put his script for Drag Me To Hell, then called The Curse, to one side. Ten years later he picked it up and continued on his quest to create a relatively gore-free horror film, because he didn’t want to repeat his Evil Dead films and “do exactly the same thing I had done before". So, how did he create a scary film suitable for a bunch of teenagers? By using tension, special effects and brilliant dark humour of course. This week we’ve picked our auto of the week from this movie and, unlike a typical horror film, the girl’s car doesn’t break down on a stretch of lonely road. Nope, Christine’s (Alison Lohman of Big Fish and Gamer) 2000 Ford Focus is pretty reliable and gets her out of a sticky situation. »
The Twilight Saga: New Moon tour dates announced
27 October 2009 5:49 AM, PDT
Grab your diaries Twi-fans as it’s that time of year again, yes the dates for The Twilight Saga: New Moon tour have been announced. Following in the (sometimes unsuccessful) footsteps of last year’s attempts to bring the cast of Twilight to shopping malls across the Us, comes a new tour to promote the much-hyped sequel, New Moon. This will indeed mean you’ll get to see the likes of franchise stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and even hear some of the soundtrack’s music performed live by the artists themselves. Fingers crossed things go better than last year. Click over for the list of dates and venues. »
