Robert Downey, Jr. Explains Guy Ritchie's "Holmes Vision"
Director Guy Ritchie rose to fame with movies like Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch as much for his innovative direction and editing as for the intricate plots and colorful characters that populated those movies. In his latest picture, Sherlock Holmes, Ritchie employed a filming technique that the titular star, Robert Downey, Jr., said included "the strangest direction" that he "ever got on a film set."
Guy made it clear we were going to do something called Holmes Vision. You see Holmes’ vision of a punch before he delivers it and then you see the real thing. For the slow-motion fighting scenes, Guy used to tell me to try a take where I was punching through peanut butter.
In Ritchie's movie, as in the books by creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes is an accomplished bare-knuckle boxer, something Ritchie had experience shooting previously in Snatch with Brad Pitt's memorable "pikey" character. »

Kevin Smith Explains Why A Couple of Dicks Became Cop Out
18 hours ago
Two weeks ago, word spread that Kevin Smith's buddy-cop homage A Couple of Dicks, starring Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan, was getting a new title. The new title, Cop Out, is much tamer and less memorable than its predecessor, much to Smith's chagrin. Smith explained to EW the pain he endured in having to change the title.
Look, losing A Couple of Dicks was almost akin to losing my own d**k. It was a perfect buddy-cop movie comedy title. Everyone knew it. You couldn't say that title to somebody without a f**king smile crossing their face. But what I had gone through with Zack and Miri Make a Porno — "porno" had become very problematic, it became tough for us to advertise [the movie], blah blah blah. Warner Bros. decided, "Hey man, we'll call the networks and see if we're going to get any problems [with A Couple of Dicks as a title], months before the movie's ever going to come out. »

Quentin Tarantino Discusses Inglourious Basterds Screenings in Germany and Israel, Plus His Prequel Script
18 hours ago
Fans who would like another Inglourious Basterds may get their wish ... eventually. Writer/director Quentin Tarantino told NY Magazine that he's written 40 pages of a Basterds prequel, though he plans to make a "smaller, less epic" movie first. Tarantino wouldn't reveal much about the proposed project, other than that it would be in a "different genre entirely" from Basterds. Tarantino is hoping he can finish that script in about five or six months.
Tarantino was fresh from a foreign press tour for Basterds, where, even in Germany, the movie won over audiences.
When Germans are watching World War II movies, they're used to cringing. Why they make themselves endure it, I don't know. That is just the way it is for them, and they expect that that's the way it's going to be. And they're always forced to look at it from the guilt perspective.

Top 10 Animated/Kids Movies of the Decade
25 December 2009 2:22 AM, PST
The ReelzChannel 100 began when we asked Leonard Maltin for his favorite Hidden Gems of the decade. His list led the web team into a general discussion about the best movies of the decade and — after no small amount of debate, arguing, and (we're not proud to say) some petty name-calling — we decided we'd better bring it to an end with a company-wide vote. Then it was just a matter of tallying up the votes and hoping for the best. Lucky for us, ReelzChannel is filled with a staff ranging from movie lovers to movie fanatics. What turned out isn't what you'll find on a critic's best of list — instead it's what movie fans really enjoyed.
In day five of the ReelzChannel 100, we highlight the Top 10 Animated/Kids Movies of the Decade.

Brad Fuller Talks Nightmare on Elm Street Reshoots and the Fate of Friday the 13th 2 3-D
24 December 2009 4:22 AM, PST
When news surfaces that a movie needs to undergo reshoots, it's usually a sign of trouble. So when word got out that A Nightmare on Elm Street needed the reshoot treatment, fans got nervous. Producer Brad Fuller quickly responded via his Platinum Dunes blog to explain what was happening.
While many of you are enjoying a Christmas break, I am working everyday on Elm Street. I have read all the rumors and want to make sure that you have the facts. We are doing a couple of days of reshooting Elm Street. People seem to be making a big deal about that fact. Elm Street is our 8th film and we've had reshoots for every film. As I have stated here many times, I try to read everything and I pay attention. The fans input has always been so valuable to me, and Elm Street is no exception. I don't »

Sherlock Holmes Reviews
24 December 2009 4:14 AM, PST
Director Guy Ritchie has completely reimaged Sherlock Holmes in a very Guy Ritchie way, and that's not sitting well with a lot of the critics.
"In this corner is Guy Ritchie, master of visual con-game action movies that tend toward all-style-no-substance. In that corner is Sherlock Holmes, the cerebral master sleuth who solves crimes with quiet deduction, intense concentration and a seven-percent solution. It's no contest: The winner is Ritchie in a pyrotechnical knockout."
— Kirk Honeycutt, Hollywood Reporter
"If you can get over the idea of Sherlock Holmes as an action hero — and if, indeed, you want to — then there is something to enjoy about this flagrant makeover of fiction's first modern detective into a man of brawn as much as brain."
— Todd McCarthy, Variety
"[Director] Ritchie is all about the whooshing and headbanging, leaving no space between Holmes' words to savor their meaning. Downey is irresistible. The movie, not so much. »

New Japanese Tekken Movie Poster
24 December 2009 2:15 AM, PST
A new poster, mostly in Japanese, for Dwight H. Little's (Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid) Tekken adaptation has appeared on the movie's official site. Based on the popular Namco video game franchise of the same name, Tekken was written for the screen by Alan McElroy (The Marine) and features fight choreography by Dion Lam (Spider-Man 2).
In the movie's post-apocalyptic, near-future world, corporations are in control of the few remaining population centers. One of the most powerful corporations, Tekken, sponsors the Iron Fist Tournament as a way of appeasing and controlling the populace. Jin Kazama (played by Jon Foo), a noble street fighter, enters the Iron Fist Tournament so that he can get close to the chairman of the Tekken corporation, Heihachi Mishima (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa), who he blames for the death of his mother.

Brittany Murphy DVD Art Pulled
24 December 2009 1:23 AM, PST
In the wake of Brittany Murphy's untimely death, the DVD rental company Redbox has decided to pull the artwork of the actress' latest direct-to-dvd movie, Deadline, from their kiosks. The artwork depicts a seemingly lifeless Murphy in a bathtub, which is eerily reminiscent of how the actress was found in her Hollywood bathroom.
Redbox spokeswoman Laura Dihel told E! News: We are removing the box art images from our displays. We will continue to carry her film, but we will not be featuring the box art. We have 19,000 locations, and to be honest, I can't tell you if this particular art is up at all the locations.
In the movie, Murphy plays a screenwriter who has a psychological breakdown after discovering videos recorded by past residents of the haunted mansion where she is trying to complete a script. The artwork has already been removed from the Redbox website and »

Mark Strong on the Tone of Kick-Ass, Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood
24 December 2009 1:12 AM, PST
Actor Mark Strong has been making the rounds recently in support of his latest movie, Sherlock Holmes, but he also has starring roles in three other upcoming genre pictures: Robin Hood, Kick-Ass, and John Carter of Mars. In a new interview with CinemaBlend, Strong spoke about how important it is for an actor to understand the tone movie's director is looking for.
Strong reunited with the RocknRolla director, Guy Ritchie, for Sherlock Holmes, in which he plays the villain Lord Blackwood. Strong said that his portrayal of the character depended very much on the tone Ritchie wanted and how the titular star of the movie, Robert Downey Jr., approached the role of Holmes.
We had to know exactly what that tone was, and I think Guy certainly had an inkling of it, and Robert certainly had an inkling, and brought what he does to the film. He's very mischievous, Robert, »

Is a Hawkman Movie to Follow Green Lantern?
24 December 2009 12:54 AM, PST
Are Warner brothers and DC planning a Hawkman movie after Green Lantern? According to Pajiba, the winged hero is next in DC's line of Justice League heroes to get his own movie. Apparently, Warners is describing the project as "part Indiana Jones, part Da Vinci Code, and part Ghost," which is a confusing trio to use in describing another movie. Does this mean Hawkman will be deciphering ancient codes to find an archeological treasure while speaking though Whoopi Goldberg?
DC and Warners have long wanted to develop a Justice League movie, though they may be trying to launch individual movies first, like Marvel has done with their Avengers characters. Producer Dan Lin, who was at one point working on the Justice League movie, told Collider that a plan from DC will be announced early next year.

New Inception Trailer and Poster
23 December 2009 7:31 AM, PST
So far, nothing has made much sense about Christopher Nolan's thriller Inception, not the few revealed plot details, nor even the trailer. The latest poster is no help in that regard, showing only a cityscape. Considering that the movie is about the "architecture of the mind," does this mean that the entire city be inside the mind?
It's doubtful that the latest trailer will answer these questions, either. Screening before Sherlock Holmes, several websites that saw the trailer at a recent press screening have done their best to interpret the images and voice-over from Leonardo DiCaprio, which sounds something like this:
What's the most resilient form of parasite? An idea. An idea has the power to build a city ... to change the world, and re-write all the rules ... and that's why I need to steal it.
A version of the trailer, dubbed only in French with no English subtitles, »

30 Days of Night: Dark Days To Be a "War" Movie
23 December 2009 5:40 AM, PST
Shooting has wrapped on the 30 Days of Night sequel, 30 Days of Night: Dark Days, and producer J.R. Young told ShockTilYouDrop that fans of the first movie will be very pleased with what he described as a "war movie". I think the second film definitely stays within the world of the first film and it stays true to the second graphic novel in the series for those fans out there. The story is within that world but there are differences and a lot of that is due to the graphic novel. The first film is very much a survival film and this next one is all about revenge. There's an action component. The last one is a western, this one is more of a war movie. It's taking the battle to the vampires.
Seeking revenge will be Kiele Sanchez, taking over for Melissa George who could not work out her schedule to return. »

It's Complicated Reviews
23 December 2009 5:10 AM, PST
Director Nancy Meyers' brand of rom-com is unmistakable, and always a huge hit at the box office. Reviews of her latest, It's Complicated, tend to split along generational lines, with Boomer critics being Ok with it, Gen X not so much.
"It's simply a good time, a relatively adult and easygoing conveyance for three ace performers of a certain age, working through a few comic machinations created by writer-director Nancy Meyers."
— Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
"You don't have to feel guilty for lapping up this froth. Just don't expect nourishment."
— Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
"It's Complicated is middle-aged porn, the specialty of Meyers, who also set ladies and interior decorators drooling over homes and gardens in 2006's The Holiday."
— Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
"The rom com is a talky genre, sure, but the people here never say anything interesting; the script is all situations and no jokes."

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel Reviews
23 December 2009 1:53 AM, PST
If you've got young kids, you've probably resigned yourself to the fact you'll be taking them to this movie at some point over the long holiday break. Here's what you're in for.
"Perhaps not since The Godfather: Part II have we seen a sequel come along that more than matches the mastery of the film that came before it — all the pathos, the brio, the epic sweep ... the cheese balls."
— Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times
"...a frenetic but undeniably funny follow-up that offers twice the number of singing-and-dancing rodents in another seamless blend of CGI and live-action elements."
— Joe Leydon, Variety
"Closing out a pretty great year for children's movies — Up, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Coraline among them — Betty Thomas's dutiful animated and live-action sequel to 2007's Alvin and the Chipmunks brings up the rear with capable mediocrity."
— Ella Taylor, Village Voice
"...a charmless sequel."

First Karate Kid Trailer
23 December 2009 1:50 AM, PST
The Karate Kid remake won't head into theaters until next summer, but its first trailer is now online. At one point titled The Kung-Fu Kid (and before even that titled The Karate Kid), the remake has the "kid" (Jaden Smith) and his mother (Taraji P. Henson) move to Beijing instead of Reseda, and kung-fu will be the taught by Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) instead of karate by Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). Other than that, it seems like the remake isn't trying to stray too far from the original story, aside from having the teacher demonstrate the techniques. The similarity may be why they changed the title back to The Karate Kid, even though there's no karate actually in it. Check out the trailer below.
