Consumption (2008)

1 November 2009 12:38 PM, PST

Written and Directed by Richard Powell

Cast: Bruno Talotta, Andrea Nettleton

Fatal Pictures Inc

31 minutes

Consumption is inspired by the true story, so says the opening credits. And I think I recall they story they are referring to. Craigslist is good for many things, not the least of which is experimentation. Sometimes that experiment involves finding out what it’s like to eat someone. And sometimes it involves finding someone who is willing to eat you...

In this case, the experiment is conducted by George, an academic and college professor who has been speaking to a student named Claudia via the internet. Claudia has kindly volunteered her services in the name of science. Bobbie 'Bloody Mary' Weiner ('Pumpkinhead II', Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights)

1 November 2009 12:09 PM, PST

Bobbie Weiner, Aka Bloody Mary, is an FX artist with her own line of specialty makeup for literally any kind of transformation. If you're wondering where you might have seen her work, try the Oscar-nominated romace-catastrophe flick Titanic; she was the special effects make-up artist who transformed hundreds of actors into blue-lipped, icicle covered corpses. She also was in charge of the makeup for the horror films Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings and Voodoo.

Bobbie's got a whole lineup of her own FX supplies and original makeup; scary stuff, of course, but also any kind of makeup anyone might need. And you can read the comic she created, Tales of Bloody Mary, in any comic book store. Bobbie shares her recent work with Pretty/Scary's staffer Andrew Shearer...

Have you, or do you ever encounter situations where an individual is clearly put off by what you do?

Bw: Yes. Definitely. I »

Today on her Huffington Post Blog, Jamie Lee Curtis (best known to horror fans as the original Lori Strode in John Carpenter's Halloween, as well as the star of thr original The Fog, Prom Night and Terror Train), shows us she's actually very anti-horror on Halloween.

Her desire to 'tone down' the gore on halloween, especially when it comes to kids, just really gets my panties in a twisted, bleeding bunch.

"Halloween, the holiday, is a breeding ground for a seemingly unending gruesome gore fest," says Curtis. "Has it always been this way? I don't think so. I remember Halloween as a time to dress up in a costume other than myself. That was what was fun..."

"The fact that my film nemesis," she continues, "And if you ever see the forgettable Halloween 8, my subsequent murderer, Michael Myers (for the uninformed, he is the one in the gray jumpsuit and »

Fantasy (Aka Fantasme) (2009)

28 October 2009 2:03 PM, PDT

Written and Directed by Izabel Grondin

Featuring Felixe Ross, Patrick Lauzon

15 minutes

Review by Maude Michaud

Anyone who’s familiar with the films of Izabel Grondin knows she often tackles disturbing subjects matter. Fantasy, her latest short film, is no exception. The premise is straightforward: a man and a woman meet through an ad to fulfill a particular fantasy. Revealing what that fantasy is would destroy most of the mystery and tension of the first act, so I’ll refrain from doing so. I’ll just say that it involves something that is unpleasant for most of us, women...

From the start, there is an aura of unpleasant sensuality. We know something bad is going to happen, yet our inner voyeur urge compels us to watch as we are granted access to the small room where the two main characters play out their fantasy. There is a strong fetishist tone to the film, »

Amanda Gusack's 'In Memorium'; a haunting on camera before 'Paranormal Activity'

27 October 2009 2:03 PM, PDT

Before Paranormal Activity caused such a stir, Amanda Gusack directed the indie ghost story In Memorium, which is only now recieving its dues. Gusack more recently directed the higher-budget horror/thriller The Betrayed, which stars Melissa George and is available on DVD.

Gusack's haunting-caught-on-home-video film is one of our faveorite examples of women directing awesome new horror movies, and we'd love to point out that if you like Paranormal Activity, you'll love In Memorium. On July 27, Dennis Wade was diagnosed with terminal cancer. On September 25th, he began to document his illness. On September 27th...the cameras recorded something else. Check out these three clips from In Memorium...
