Allow me to start with a personal note. I consider the late James Clavell one of the best authors of all time, with his Asian Saga novels in particular being a series of truly masterful works. His combination of historical events (if somewhat altered) with the presentation of the social, cultural, political and financial context of the areas the books take place in is truly astonishing to read. Even more so, his writing is completely clean-cut without the usual, unnecessarily long descriptions and utterly useless scenes of dreams etc, with every word counting throughout his work. It is also a true pleasure to say that the creators of the new “Shogun” have managed to capture all these traits in a truly impressive production.
It is also worth stating that John Blackthorne, the protagonist here is loosely based on the on the historical English navigator William Adams, who came to Japan...

Official companion podcasts for popular TV series are not a recent phenomenon. Ever since networks realized that they couldn’t leave all the analytical fun to fans, big time TV shows have been accompanied by network-sponsored audio complements.
HBO has been a frequent producer with podcasts for its dramas like Watchmen, House of the Dragon, Succession, and more. Other networks have since gotten in on the action like Paramount Network with Yellowstone, Showtime with Dexter: New Blood, and Apple TV+ with For All Mankind.
The acclaimed American TV brand FX, however, never seemed too keen on official tie-in podcasting despite presenting many intriguing prospects over the years like The Bear and Fargo. That all changed this year when the Disney-owned company launched FX’s Shōgun: The Official Podcast to accompany the weekly release of its epic miniseries Shōgun.

Ariane Louis-Seize’s “Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person” has picked up the director’s award at Venice Days.
“It bravely addresses crucial themes such as depression, mental health, euthanasia and neurodiversity. Nevertheless, it is able to do so with a light-hearted feel, which makes the film radical and courageous,” noted the jury, composed of European cinephiles from the 27 Times Cinema program and led by Portugal’s João Pedro Rodrigues, behind “The Ornithologist” and “Will-o’-the-Wisp.”
“While the film has unique tone and style, it joyfully reaches a wider audience thanks to its tenderness and emotional engagement,” they added, praising Louis-Seize’s “strong directorial vision.”
In the film, a young vampire has a problem: she is too sensitive to kill. When her parents cut off her blood supply, Sasha meets Paul, a teenager with suicidal tendencies who is willing to give his life to save hers.

Dhaka, July 13 (Ians) After losing third and final T20I to Bangladesh by four wickets, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted that the batting collapse in the middle prevented them from reaching the total they were expecting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Despite Harmanpreet top-scoring with 40 and looking as the only Indian batter to apply herself to the slow conditions, the visitors suffered a horror slump from 91/3 to 102/9, losing their last six wickets for just 11 runs, as Bangladesh chased it down with 10 balls to spare.
“On this wicket, we need to depend on singles. Our batting collapsed; we could not get even six runs an over. The five overs were the game-changer. We did not get the total we were expecting,” said Harmanpreet in the post-match presentation ceremony.
The Indian skipper also appreciated Bangladesh for their alertness in chasing and not allowing India to break free.

Dhaka, July 11 (Ians) Sensational by their spinners helped India beat Bangladesh by eight runs in a thrilling second T20I and take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series at Shere Bangla National Stadium, here on Tuesday.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, India had a few batters getting starts but neither could convert, eventually posting only 95 for 8 in 20 overs — their lowest total in T20Is against Bangladesh.
Having a low total on the board, Deepti Sharma (3-12) and Minnu Mani (2-9) spun a web around Bangladesh and shared five wickets between them to keep Bangladesh in check before Shafali Verma cleaned up three tailenders in the final over to finish with 3-15 and bowling out the hosts for 87 runs.
In the run chase, Pooja Vastrakar gave 10 runs in the first over of the innings, which turned out to be the only over of fast bowling in India’s defence.

For the third year running, Annecy’s artistic residency program accompanied three selected projects on a six-month adventure, beginning with a three-month script workshop before moving to Annecy’s Papeteries Image Factory for a similar bout of tailored mentorships and visual experimentation. At the end, the filmmakers launch their development titles at the MIFA market.
“Often when filmmakers start a project, they are expected to advance too quickly, without the necessary time for reflection and experimentation,” said coordinator Géraldine Baché. “They have to rush into production because time is money, so we wanted to give them that time, to offer three months to come and explore, to test things and find a kind of visual identity for their project.”
These are the three projects from this year’s selection.

Fairytales and fire stations merge in the new film from João Pedro Rodrigues.
Few filmmakers can count themselves as an ornithologist — or expert on birds — and a director, but Portuguese filmmaker Rodrigues is both. Now, he’s directed his first narrative feature since 2016’s “The Ornithologist” with the musical fantasy “Will O’ the Wisp.” The homoerotic, full-frontal-filled gay musical — Rodrigues himself, while also being a bird expert and filmmaker, is also openly gay — premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight last May before wending its way around the festival circuit. Watch the trailer, an IndieWire exclusive, via here or the link below.
In “Will O’ the Wisp,” His Royal Highness Alfredo (Mauro Costa) is a king without a crown and also on a death bed, from which he’s taken back to distant memories from his youth, a time when he dreamed of becoming a fireman. In this chapter of his life,...

Following 2016’s The Ornithologist, it’s been quite a wait for the next feature from João Pedro Rodrigues. It finally arrived at last year’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight with Will-o’-the-Wisp, a delightfully sexual and imaginative queer firefighter musical fantasy. Now set for a May 26 release beginning at IFC Center, featuring the director in person and screening with his 2019 short Potemkin Steps, the new U.S. trailer has arrived from Strand Releasing.
Here’s the synopsis: “On his deathbed, his royal highness Alfredo, king without a crown, is taken back to distant youth memories and the time he dreamt of becoming a fireman. The encounter with instructor Afonso from the fire brigade opens a new chapter in the life of the two young men immersed in love and desire, and the will to change the status quo.”

However, soon after Power-play, Tahlia McGrath was introduced into the attack and she gave Up Warriorz instant success by dismissing Shafali (17 off 14), courtesy a splendid catch by Kiran Navgire at deep square leg.
