Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.
While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. Of the five productions cited for Best New Broadway Musical, only “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Suffs” made the cut in the all-important Best Score category. “What looks at first to be remarkable, bizarre, will soon reveal itself to be part of a pattern,” sings Ethan Dobson (Ben Levi Ross), a just-out-of-Princeton wünderkind, at the start of the new musical The Connector, as he lands a coveted job writing features for a legendary magazine. And though he explains that the lyric is a quote from the venerated founder of the titular magazine, what’s quickly revealed is that it’s Ethan himself who’s remarkable, bizarre, and part of a pattern we’ll soon recognize all too well.
That pattern, especially as exposed under the blazing spotlight shone by Robin Martinez (Hannah Cruz), an overlooked female Latina staffer at the magazine and the musical’s blistering narrator, is nothing less than the patriarchy. “Half the stories of the world are left unwritten/Half the stories of the world are kept unread,” Robin protests in “Cassandra,” the...

John Lennon wasn’t the biggest fan of The Beatles. He said his life felt like a trap because of the band, and the public notoriety became a major nuisance when Yoko Ono entered his life. The English media — and many Fab Four fans — didn’t warm up to Ono, and it left a sour taste in his mouth. He and Ono moved to New York after The Beatles broke up. John regretted not making a decision that could “have made a million pounds” for the songwriter.

This spring, the show will welcome back Ben Levi Ross, who earned critical acclaim when he originated the role of 'Evan Hansen' on the first North American tour after understudying the role on Broadway. Zachary Noah Piser, who has been part of the Dear Evan Hansen family since March 2019 and is currently the 'Evan' alternate on Broadway, will then become the first Asian American actor to step into the role full-time.

2021 could be remembered as a pivotal year in the history of movie musical adaptations. Of course, this synergy has been happening since cinema began to talk (which leads to the singing and the sounds of dance) over 90 years ago. Perhaps after being cooped up for much of last year, Hollywood has enlisted Broadway to get folks back to the multiplex. In The Heights kicked off the Summer film cinema, while Dear Evan Hanson stirred up lots of discussion, but very little box office. We’ll see Steven Spielberg’s take on a true stage classic West Side Story in a few weeks. But what can tide the film song and dance fans till then? How about a flick that combines the talents of two Tony-awarding winning titans of the last thirty or so years?...

Saudi director Shahad Ameen‘s feminist fable “Scales” has been selected as Saudi Arabia’s official candidate for the Oscar in the international feature film category.
“Scales” draws on Arabic folklore about a young woman named Hayat – played by newcomer Basima Hajjar – who rebels against the tradition in her fishing village of sacrificing female children to monstrous mermaids lurking in the sea. The groundbreaking film launched from the 2019 Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, where it won the Verona Film Club award for innovative filmmaking, and has since been shown at a slew of other festivals, including London, Carthage, Cairo, Singapore, where it won best picture, and at SXSW 2020.
In November 2020, “Scales” was released theatrically in Saudi Arabia. Variance Films will release the film in the U.S. next year.

In the Middle East, the push to get back into production is best encapsulated by Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates city that’s been steadily growing as a global hub for Hollywood and Bollywood shoots, and where even during the coronavirus crisis production never stopped.
“We maintained full production throughout the pandemic,” says Michael Garin, CEO of Abu Dhabi’s Twofour54, the outfit that provides infrastructure and incentives to more than 500 entertainment companies.
Though Hollywood and Bollywood shoots went on hiatus, it was “Inheritance,” the world’s first Arabic-language, U.S.-style soap opera, produced by Twofour54, Image Nation Abu Dhabi and Saudi-owned Mbc Studios, that kept the cameras rolling in dedicated studios where safety measures — such as temperature checks, Covid-19 testing and sterilization of sets and equipment — were put in place in February.
“The difference with us is we really did it immediately,” says Image Nation chief content officer Ben Ross.
