All Quiet on the Western Front is a 2022 anti-war film based on Erich Maria Remarque’s novel “Im Westen nicht Neues (There is nothing new in the West).” It follows Paul Bäumer on the battlefield of World War I while peace negotiations were taking place. The film also went on to win Best International Feature Film, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, and Best Cinematography at the 95th Academy Awards. However, what else does the movie offer alongside its war themes? This article will analyze the film on its historic value as well as how well it impacted its audience.

The following contains spoilers for "All Quiet on the Western Front."
The biggest difference between the two theatrical versions of "All Quiet on the Western Front" is the specific perspective they bring to the story of German soldier Paul Bäumer and his friends and fellow enlistees during World War I. There have actually been three adaptations of Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 novel, "All Quiet on the Western Front," but one was a TV movie. The original 1930 theatrical version was the first literary adaptation to win Best Picture and the first film to ever win both that category and Best Director at the 3rd Academy Awards.
Now, over nine decades later, the most recent Netflix adaptation of "All Quiet on the Western Front" has joined the ranks of "Parasite," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and "Fanny and Alexander" to become one of four foreign-language films with the most wins in Oscar history.

‘Harry Potter’ star Daniel Radcliffe was originally cast in the lead role for ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’. Screenwriter Lesley Paterson has revealed that the ‘Harry Potter’ actor was set to play the role of Paul Baumer in one of his first film projects after the wizardry franchise came to an end in 2011, reports ‘Female First UK’.
Movie bosses believed that casting Daniel, 33, would secure the necessary funding to make the project based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel but it turned out not to be the case.
Lesley told the ‘Daily Mirror’ newspaper: “When we optioned the book 16 years ago, the landscape was so different. There’s no way you could have done a German-language film and raised any money for it.”
“So we decided pretty early on, we would probably have to pitch it as English speaking with a German accent. And we thought, ‘What names are going to raise finance?...

With the Oscars less than a week away, there’s been a lot of talk about which films will win the top awards. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” has emerged as the frontrunner, but only 8% of moviegoers have seen the film, according to data from Pch Consumer Insights. So if people aren’t seeing the top contenders, what are they watching?
It should come as little surprise that the most popular Oscar-nominated movies are the ones with major box office success. “Top Gun: Maverick” grossed nearly $1.5 billion at the box office globally, while “Avatar: The Way of Water” grossed nearly $2.3 billion worldwide. However, 44% of people saw “Top Gun: Maverick,” while only 15% saw “Avatar: The Way of Water,” according to data from Pch Consumer Insights.
This is because the latter isn’t yet available to be streamed following its Dec. 16 theatrical debut, unlike “Top Gun: Maverick” which came to transactional video-on-demand...

War is young men dying and old men talking. The former lies at the heart of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 novel All Quiet on the Western Front, based on the German writer’s experiences in the trenches of World War I. In Netflix’s new adaptation, the latter half of that axiom is also represented with the addition of a subplot centered on the armistice negotiations that ultimately ended fighting on the Western Front. As in Remarque’s novel, the story is principally told through the eyes of Paul Bäumer, a teenager who—propelled by patriotic fervor—enlists alongside his schoolmates only to be disillusioned […]

It’s been anything but quiet on the awards front for Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front.” After lurking under the radar for much of this season, the German World War I epic directed by Edward Berger took this year’s Academy Award nominations by storm, racking up an impressive total of nine, including Best Picture, and becoming just the 14th film not in the English language to be shortlisted for the top honor. If it walks away with the Best Picture prize on March 12, it will follow in the footsteps of “Parasite” (2019) as just the second non-English language film to pull off this feat.

There’s a lovely moment toward the end of All Quiet On The Western Front, sandwiched between several truly awful moments (and one absolutely devastating one). Felix Kammerer’s Paul Bäumer tries to walk his friend Kat (Albrecht Schuch) back to a field hospital in a church. He’s been shot, and he’s bleeding badly. Trying to stay chipper, Kat remembers a word game he used to play. You rhyme something with the last line someone sang. “Nothing rhymes with trifle,” Kat says. “Nothing.” Paul thinks. “Rifle rhymes with trifle,” he says. The two men laugh. It’s the last time anyone laughs in All Quiet On The Western Front.
Edward Berger. But it’s not your average war film. In Britain, the popular view of World War I is that phrase of the German General Ludendorff’s: that the heroic dead were lions led by donkeys in high command.

Edward Berger's 2022 adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 novel "All Quiet on the Western Front" is among the greatest anti-war films of all time, with an inventive and poignant score, truly beautiful cinematography, and a uniquely German perspective on a (German) story that's already been adapted twice for U.S. audiences. The movie has been praised by critics and filmgoers alike (you can read our review here!) for its portrayal of one young man's experiences during the final days of World War I, and has been nominated for nine Oscars at the 2023 Academy Awards. Among those awards are nominations for both Best International Feature Film and Best Picture, which is a pretty massive deal for a German-language film that quietly debuted on Netflix.

Composing the score for a war film can be, apologies for the metaphor, a minefield. Go too heavy on the orchestral oomph — all soaring strings and booming base — and you can quickly swing into schmaltz. Go too small and minimalist, and the onscreen explosions can overpower your music. Plus, there’s the danger of familiarity, of echoing the grand and epic scores of war films past.
So, when director Edward Berger asked his regular composer, Volker Bertelmann, to write a score for his antiwar drama All Quiet on the Western Front, he told him to break all the rules.
“I said, ‘I want something different, something we’ve never heard before,’ ” says Berger, “then, and this is almost the most important thing: I said, ‘I want you to destroy the images onscreen. Don’t beautify or sentimentalize.’ [I wanted] a sound that feels like it’s coming from inside [lead character] Paul Bäumer’s stomach.

“All Quiet on the Western Front”
Before director and co-screenwriter Edward Berger’s 2022 version, Erich Maria Remarque’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” had never been adapted in its native German. The director thrilled at the opportunity to bring it to life for new audiences with a depiction of World War I that captured the brutality and dehumanization of battle. Though he is hard-pressed to call it his favorite scene in the film, Berger says the sequence in which young soldier Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) stabs a French soldier while try- ing to climb out of a crater on the battlefield is the one he was most gratified to shoot — “because it was so hard to get done,” he says.
“We shot it over a period of about three or four days with Felix Kammerer crying nonstop, the camera operator giving everything by lugging the camera around the mud,...

For All Quiet on the Western Front, director Edward Berger wanted the film to be created from a German perspective. He tasked composer Volker Bertelmann with the job of creating a score he’s never done before, giving him few insights into what he wanted for the final cut. Based on the 1928 novel of the same name, the film follows Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer), a young German soldier who experiences the horrific reality of serving on the front line. Bertelmann wanted to use instruments connected to that time period, so he used a refurbished harmonium passed down from his grandmother.

At the start of awards season, Edward Berger’s All Quiet On The Western Front was a lock for International, but few could have foreseen how much further it would go. Alongside that nomination, the German film is now also in the running for Best Picture, having made the shortlist for Sound, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Visual Effects and Cinematography.

An admission: I’m not a giant fan of war movies. I loved “Platoon,” “Full Metal Jacket,” “Apocalypse Now,” “The Thin Red Line,” “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan,” to name a half-dozen. But too often, I’ve found the violence gratuitous, the point about the pointlessness of war driven home too hard and transparently. But my fellow editors at Gold Derby have been insisting for weeks that the German remake of “All Quiet on the Western Front” on Netflix was a harrowing masterpiece that needed to be taken more seriously in the Oscar race – and not just for Best International Feature but picture, director (Edward Berger), adapted screenplay, cinematography and a slew of crafts categories, too. I finally caved and watched it over the weekend, and I’m happy to report they were right.

Edward Berger’s gripping, and gutting, World War I drama All Quiet on the Western Front continued its extraordinary award season run on Thursday when it picked up 14 BAFTA nominations, leading the pack, ahead of Martin McDonagh’s Irish drama The Banshees of Inisherin and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s metaverse action comedy Everything Everywhere All At Once, which received 10 nods each.
The 14 noms tied the all-time record for a non-English-language film, blowing past the 12 nominations secured by Michel Hazanavicius’ silent film tribute The Artist (2011), while equaling the tally scored by Ang Lee’s wuxia masterpiece Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon more than 20 years ago.
In addition to the expected nomination in the best non-English-language feature category, the war drama picked up nominations for best film for producer Malte Grunert, best director for Berger, best adapted screenplay (co-written by Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell) and a best supporting actor BAFTA nom for Albrecht Schuch,...

There is no shortage of epic stories found in history, born out of conflict and human resilience. This Oscar season has seen more than its fair share of historical epics, taking place all across the world.
The Woman King takes a look at the all-female Agojie warriors from The Kingdom of Dahomey in 18th century Africa. Based on the 1929 novel of the same name, All Quiet on the Western Front shows a much less heroic side of war and the trauma faced by young men tricked into joining the German frontline. Emancipation is loosely based on the story of ‘Whipped Peter’, an escaped slave from Louisiana whose scarred image went global in the early 1860s.
The Woman King
Editor Terilyn A. Shropshire was thrilled when director Gina Prince-Bythewood referred to The Woman King as “our” next movie. “That was music to an editor’s ears, when you hear ‘our’ instead of ‘my’,” Shropshire says.

Who
Felix Kammerer
Age: 27
Hometown: Vienna, Austria
What
In his feature film debut, Austrian theater actor Felix Kammerer delivers a haunting star-making performance in Edward Berger’s German-language rendition of All Quiet on the Western Front. The anti-war drama, based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel of the same name, follows a German battalion of spirited young men as they experience the atrocities of war while battling the French on the frontline. More specifically, the soldiers’ road to disillusionment is seen through the eyes of plucky Paul Bäumer (Kammerer) as the damning psychological effects of World War I combat ravage what’s left of his innocence.
For Kammerer, a veteran of stage plays but a newcomer to film, watching himself on the big screen for the first time offered great insight. Upon witnessing the raw expression of trauma and humanity in his performance, Kammerer decided he was on the right career track.

Composer Volker Bertelmann grew up reading the 1929 novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” when he was in school, which served as the basis for the 1930 Best Picture winner and the new 2022 Netflix adaptation, which recently made the Oscar shortlist in five categories including Best Score. “It’s a surprise and at the same time you feel uplifted on that day [for being] acknowledged for your work,” Bertelmann reveals about the film’s success on the awards front.

Before supervising sound editor Frank Kruse started to work on Edward Berger’s adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” he thought there might be some original recordings from World War I still available to hear as a point of reference. But when that was quickly proven implausible – the few recordings available had a poor sound quality that “didn’t get across any physicality,” Kruse says – the industry veteran turned to the printed word instead.
“I found very little research going on about the soundscape of that time. But what I did find is an article mentioning letters of soldiers that wrote especially of the terror of sound they experienced in the trenches,” Kruse tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our Meet the Experts: Sound panel. When “All Quiet on the Western Front” director Edward Berger called visual effects supervisor Frank Petzold, with whom he worked on the AMC series “The Terror,” about “getting the band back together” for the war epic, Petzold’s first reaction was a “big gulp.” “It’s such a historical and literary iconic book that before you start thinking about the effects of technology or how are we going to do it, your first thought is, like, ‘Oh, my God, you really wanna touch that?’” Petzold tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Visual Effects panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Because it’s such an important book and especially with the current events.”

When German writer Erich Maria Remarque was 18 and a student at the University of Munster, he was drafted into the army and fought in the trenches on the Western front during World War I. He was wounded five times with the final instance in 1917 being so serious he spent the last year of the conflict recuperating in a German hospital. His experiences during the global conflict inspired his powerful 1929 anti-war novel “All Quiet On the Western Front” which, with the war in Ukraine, seems more timely than ever.
The novel slammed the door on the concept of the romanticism of war. War is hell. The book’s protagonist, the wide-eyed innocent Paul Baumer, and his friends are excited to get into battle on the Western front, exterminate the enemy and return home heroes. Edward Berger caused a splash in 2015 with the sleeper-hit TV series Deutschland ’83, a slow-build spy drama set in the deep freeze of the cold war. This year he went even further back into Germany’s history for All Quiet on the Western Front, a brutal retelling of Erich Maria Remarque’s First World War novel, first published in 1929. Many years in limbo, including a period of time with Daniel Radcliffe attached, the project received an adrenaline shot when Berger came on board to take the novel back to its German roots. The harrowing Netflix production has captivated audiences all over the world with the story of rookie soldier Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer), and has a strong shot at the International Oscar, having made the 15-title shortlist while opening up four further possibilities for music and craft.

When a freak snow flurry began dusting the set for “All Quiet on the Western Front” on a winter location shoot in the Czech Republic early last year, cinematographer James Friend knew he had to keep rolling.
The epic Netflix adaptation of the 1929 war polemic by Erich Maria Remarque, directed by Edward Berger and starring Felix Kammerer as German soldier Paul Bäumer as a naïve volunteer thrown into the nightmare of endless trench warfare, screened in competition at the Camerimage Intl. “Filmmaking is a very organic process,” says Friend, “and even though we sat down and found a visual grammar and a palette that we thought resonated with the source material – we really previsualized everything – but also we were conscious to navigate the audience through the war and beauty at the same time. And we wanted to really showcase that.”

There was a point while shooting Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front when Felix Kammerer began to question his life choices.
“We were in a field, knee-deep in mud, and it was pouring rain,” recalls the young Austrian actor, recounting his experience on Edward Berger’s World War I drama, an adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 classic anti-war novel, which is Germany’s contender for the best international film Oscar. “We had these costumes, these wool uniforms, that would just suck up the wet. After the day’s shoot, we’d weigh them and they’d be 100 pounds! Running through the mud, 14 hours a day, with 100 pounds on your back. Again and again and again.”
Every night, he says, he’d collapse in bed, sleep four hours and wake up, sore and aching. Only to get up at 3 a.m.

The 1929 publication of “All Quiet on the Western Front” was so controversial that the anti-war novel by German writer Erich Maria Remarque was banned in Germany and he was stripped of his German citizenship — by the Nazi party. One hundred years later, the book has received its third film adaptation, in German, by director Edward Berger, and Germany could not be more proud. It has entered Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” as its official submission for the 2023 Oscars.
The story, about a 17-year-old German boy’s fervor to fight for his country against the French in World War I, has a golden history with the academy. The first film adaptation of the book won Best Picture at the 1930 Oscars; its director, Lewis Milestone, took the Best Director prize. Rotten Tomatoes has certified the 2022 remake as 91 for “retaining the power of its classic source material by focusing on the futility of war.

War is hell, but a surprising number of movies about war seem to glorify it. Even movies that are anti-war frequently have heroic characters or heroic moments, making them inspiring stories of human endurance. Few delve into the fact that war is always horrible, moments of heroism are overshadowed by its misery, and there's nothing worth glorifying.
"All Quiet on the Western Front," Edward Berger's 2022 film adaptation of the 1929 novel of the same name, does just that, with harrowing moments of quiet misery punctuated by excruciating violence and chaos. The film is beautiful to look at, but it is also a singularly disturbing experience that exemplifies not only the horror of war but its pointless futility.

Although Universal had struck on big hits with "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in 1923 and "The Phantom of the Opera" in 1925, studio honcho Carl Laemmle, Sr. was no fan of the horror genre. It was his monster-obsessed son, Carl Laemmle, Jr., that encouraged the studio to adapt the then-popular stage production of "Dracula" to film. The movie, released in 1931 and directed by Tod Browning, was stagey and nightmarish, and it deeply burned itself into the collective unconscious. Bela Lugosi, as Dracula, taught the world how vampires behave.
"Dracula" was one of Universal's biggest hits, and Carl Jr. knew that multiple more monster projects could be instantly pushed into the pipeline. The 1930s saw the release of "Frankenstein," "Dracula's Daughter," "The Invisible Man," "Bride of Frankenstein," "The Black Cat," "The Invisible Ray," "Werewolf of London," "The Raven," and scads of others. Horror became the studio's niche.

It’s a reality of modern war films — or, at least, the good ones — that they tend to be horrifying and exciting at the same time. You could say that’s a contradiction that grows out of the kinetic, larger-than-life nature of the movie medium. Or you could say it’s a truth that expresses something fundamental about war: that the very reason war persists, for all its terror and destruction and death, is that there’s something in human nature that is drawn to war. The movies, in their way, act this out for us. Once again, though, I’m speaking of the good ones. There is no more powerful an example than “Saving Private Ryan.” I have never seen a war film more thrilling, and I have never seen a war film that made me confront, more memorably, the unspeakable blood-spurting fear and devastation of war.

In its weekly top 10 list published Tuesday, Netflix said Edward Berger’s feature, an adaptation of the classic anti-war novel by German writer Erich Maria Remarque, racked up 31.5 million viewing hours since its debut on the platform last Friday.
It’s a great start for the film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September and is Germany’s official submission for the 2023 Oscars in the best international feature category. Newcomer Felix Kammerer stars as Paul Bäumer, a gung-ho student who signs up to fight on the Western front, only to be quickly disillusioned by the senseless brutality he experiences in the trenches. Albrecht Schuch (System Crasher) co-stars as his brother-in-arms Stanislaus Katczinsky.

Don't say I don't give you variety.
