PBS Kids SVP and general manager Sara DeWitt always thought she would go into publishing after earning her English degree with a focus on children’s literacy development from Stanford University. But after taking an “experimental class” for her master’s degree, her entire career trajectory changed.
“The idea was that you had all these computer science folks who were suddenly in positions where they had to write story to get people through game environments and you had all these English majors who understood story but were afraid of the technology,” DeWitt told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “My prerequisite for that class was having to learn HTML and then I got paired with computer science students to tackle different challenges and create different media types and I came out of it thinking there’s something really interesting here about what I’ve been thinking about...

Mister Rogers' legacy is one of kindness and warmth, no matter who he was addressing -- which was often the young viewers of his long-running television program on PBS. To him, everyone is worth getting to know and listen to, which provides the basis for his show's opening song, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" Speaking with a gentle, patient tenor, host, ordained minister, and all-around beloved human being Fred Rogers would spend each episode of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" fulfilling the simplest, and grandest, of missions: being a friend. He would teach cognitive skills to children through puppetry, poetry, and songs like "What Do You...

From their HGTV parody show “The Curse” to a possible reunion with “Uncut Gems” star Adam Sandler, Josh and Benny Safdie are keeping busy. Next up, the filmmaking brothers are executive-producing a still-untitled Andy Kaufman documentary, now officially underway at Tremolo Productions. That’s the documentary outfit run by Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville (“Twenty Feet from Stardom”). The documentary will also be executive-produced by famed record producer and former Columbia Records co-founder and filmmaker Rick Rubin, which means this project has some serious wattage behind it.
The documentary will be directed by Alex Braverman, Emmy-nominated director on “Gaycation” as well as the series “Waffles + Mochi,” and he worked as a producer at Vice.
Why anyone hasn’t made an Andy Kaufman documentary yet is anyone’s guess, though the comedian was explored in the 1999 Milos Forman film “Man on the Moon” starring Jim Carrey, whose experience playing the...

When Fred Rogers Prods. execs decided to revisit the classic “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” character Donkey Hodie in a modern puppet show for preschoolers, they knew just the team with the storytelling and puppeteering chops to bring the project to life: brothers Adam and David Rudman, the team behind Chicago-based Spiffy Pictures.
David Rudman is a Muppeteer who has played Cookie Monster on “Sesame Street” and Scooter, Janice and Beaker on “The Muppet Show,” and Adam Rudman is an Emmy-winning writer, whose credits include “Sesame Street,” “Tom & Jerry” and “Scooby-Doo.” They are co-creators and executive producers of “Donkey Hodie,” which premiered on PBS stations May 3.

So, How Was Your 2020? is a series in which our favorite entertainers answer our questionnaire about the music, culture and memorable moments that shaped their year. We’ll be rolling these pieces out throughout December.

Exclusive: After earning an Oscar nomination for playing Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Tom Hanks is zeroing in on another children’s favorite. We are hearing that he is in early negotiations to play Geppetto in Disney and Robert Zemeckis’ live-action retelling of Pinocchio.
Although insiders say negotiations are very early, we hear that after reading the script, Hanks has reached out to Zemeckis to let him know he wants to do the film. Disney has always longed for Hanks to play the woodcarver, having approached him years ago when Paul King was attached to direct. That deal was never made, but given Hanks and Zemeckis’ long-standing relationship going back to when they both won Oscars for their work on Forrest Gump, this seems more likely to move forward.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” kicked off the 5th installment of its “All Stars” spin off on June 5 with a jam-packed “All Star Variety Extravaganza.” In that premiere, the real world and social media feud between all stars Derrick Barry and India Ferrah took center stage. But as tension between the two continued to rise, the season-long drama we expected was cut short when India was named the challenge winner and Derrick was voted by the remaining queens as the first eliminated queen.
This season, RuPaul Charles has changed the All Stars rules once again. Instead of two of queens performing lip syncs for their legacies, the week’s challenge winner will go up against a non-competing queen deemed a “lip sync assassin.” If the season 5 all-star wins, she gets a $10,000 tip and gets to decide who to boot. Without a doubt, Tom Hanks is one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood. He’s been on our screens for decades now and brought us countless exceptional and inspirational roles in a whole host of beloved movies. The internet, in particular, is in love with the guy, unable to see any sign of malevolence behind those blue eyes.
Perhaps some of this has to do with him only ever playing the good guy in his films. Be it Toy Story‘s Woody, the titular character in Forrest Gump and, of course, his recent portrayal of Mister Rogers, Hanks almost always stays away from the role of the villain or antagonist. And it seems that’s a conscious decision, too.
Whatever it is that makes him so likable though, people absolutely love the actor and so, it’s understandable that the internet is having a bit of a meltdown now...

Tom Bergeron spent his hiatus from “Dancing with the Stars” doing “The Masked Singer,” on which he was unmasked as the Taco on Wednesday, and he does want to taco about both shows’ futures.
For the second year in a row, “Dancing” is skipping the spring cycle, and while it’s still awaiting a formal 29th season renewal, it’s expected to return in the fall. Though many fans hope it’ll eventually revert to its old schedule of two seasons per calendar year, Bergeron believes once a year is the correct call for the aging series, which premiered in 2005.
“I think that’s right for now,” he told “Entertainment Weekly.” “We don’t even have a firm pickup for the fall. So I’m clueless as to what the plans are at the network for it. I think they’ve spoken optimistically about it over the past few months,...

No matter who wins at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, it will be a surprise. That’s because there aren’t many obvious frontrunners in either the TV or film categories at this year’s competition.
Around 160,000 members from across the country vote for the SAG Awards, and with such a large voting body, members frequently give the ensemble awards in TV and film to nominees with the largest, most accomplished casts — but not always — and have been known to gravitate toward crowd pleasers over critical acclaim.
But it’s still a good sign of what actors, who represent a large chunk of the Academy voting body, are thinking as the awards calendar creeps closer to the Oscars.
On the film side, Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Jay Roach’s “Bombshell” dominating nods on the film front, while...

When composer Nate Heller was asked to score A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, he says he felt “equal parts joy, excitement and terror,” knowing that the music he’d create would have to stand up to the legacy of Fred Rogers.
“He was an extremely musical person. He wrote all the original songs for the show, which his bandleader Johnny Costa arranged for him and put his magic to,” Heller explains. “So, I think I felt this cautious excitement about, ‘Ooh, this is going to be so fun, to tuck into this project with all of this beloved music.’”

In the sketch, Mister Robinson describes gentrification as a magic trick in which "white people pay a lot of money, and then - poof! - all the Black people are gone." Film editor Anne McCabe and director Marielle Heller “both felt we needed to be incredibly respectful of the real Mister Rogers” when making “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” That courtesy extended to “the people who were involved with” Rogers’s long-running children’s series since “a lot of them were involved in the movie as well.” Watch our exclusive video interview with McCabe above.
The TriStar release is not your typical biographical drama. Instead it’s about the friendship between the beloved Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) and Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), a fictionalized version of real-life journalist Tom Junod, who profiled him in 1998 for Esquire magazine. Early on in the movie Lloyd’s wife, Andrea (Susan Kelechi Watson), begs him not to ruin her childhood by taking down her idol, and McCabe “felt that pressure” as well.

Well this is a different take on Mr. Rogers and it’s likely one that a lot of people wouldn’t get into readily but some might actually listen to just out of some strange but compelling interest since it does make sense to be curious about it. After all heavy metal does enhance a few things and some people might even think it enhances the opening theme to Mr. Rogers, but personally I don’t think so. That’s not enough reason to say that it doesn’t work at all but in all honesty it’s simply not up to my own personal standards

It’s kind of an odd thing to say since many upon many men wouldn’t even think of trying to say that they fight with their wife and have a foolproof method for doing so, but when it comes to Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Hanks has actually figured out how to quell an argument by using something he learned from Mr. Rogers. Ron Dicker from Yahoo! News managed to write a quick blurb about this interesting bit and it’s the kind of thing that many people might stop and say “That’s So Tom Hanks” if only because Hanks doesn’t seem

In case you haven’t noticed, Adam Driver delivered memorable performances this year as a newly divorced husband, a government whistleblower, a zombie fighter and a Star Wars warrior (in a Kylo Ren mask). I missed his Broadway opening (Burn This).
Indeed, at 36, Driver has appeared in 25 movies in the seven years since he first loomed tall as the befuddled lover on HBO’s Girls. Three of his movies are now in theaters, and he cleaned up this week at the Gotham Awards.
Driver clearly wins applause for versatility, but will he pay a price for ubiquity? “The great thing about acting is that you never figure anything out,” Driver told Rolling Stone.
Hollywood’s stars, and their agents, have struggled with this question for generations: At what point do actors become so overexposed that they are too familiar? Leonardo DiCaprio, a savvy star, shut down for a couple of years after The Revenant.

A lot of changes are coming to Legends of Tomorrow, and not just the “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” which will conclude on the series on January 14th.
We now have the season 5 trailer for The CW show and, well, there’s a lot to take in from the clip, which you can catch above. As well as events from the soon-to-launch “Crisis,” we see glimpses of everything from John Constantine to Beebo, and “Mister Parker’s Cul-de-Sac”? This being Legends of Tomorrow, things certainly look to be unusual.
Opening with some glimpses of the “Crisis,” including Brandon Routh’s Kingdom Come Superman, text implies that the Waverider crew are about to “face their biggest crisis.” However, this isn’t the Anti-Monitor, but rather “Mister Parker’s Cul De Sac,” where Routh is a Mister Rogers-type children’s entertainer. And a singing one, to boot. We then see some more familiar Legends craziness,...

Marielle Heller follows up her success following her success with “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” last year with another film inspired by a true story. “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” chronicles the unlikely friendship between children’s TV legend Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) and a journalist (Matthew Rhys). Sony released the picture stateside on Nov. 22 and based on the reviews, the film should do well over the Thanksgiving holiday. Critics have singled out the performance of Hanks, and he should reap his sixth Oscar nomination for his substantial supporting turn.
Benjamin Lee (The Guardian) notes, “casting Hanks as Rogers seemed almost too fitting conceptually – one beloved, fundamentally “good” Us father figure playing another. It’s a deep-rooted transformation and, while Hanks avoids attempting to awkwardly replicate Rogers’ voice – although he does nail his cadence – he focuses on exuding the same bewitching, patient curiosity that Rogers had in the people he met.

“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” director Marielle Heller didn’t want Tom Hanks to wear any prosthetics when playing Fred Rogers in the biopic, which was inspired by the Esquire article “Can You Say … Hero?” by Tom Junod (played by Matthew Rhys as a character named Lloyd Vogel). Heller felt such measures would throw up a barrier between the audience and the performance. Hanks, for one, was happy to hear that.
“To channel Mister Rogers, I had several questions for Mari,” says Hanks. “Questions including how do you want your movie to look like and feel like in the body of Mister Rogers? Are we going to do CGI? Are we going to have a lot of graphics in order to turn me into him — which is possible because I’m not as skinny as Mister Rogers, you know. Are we going to do dental plates? Jimmy Kimmel got Tom Hanks’ honest reaction to a viral clip from “Jeopardy!” last week in which none of the contestants could correctly identify him as Mister Rogers.
In the clip, a contestant selected from the category “Biopics” and host Alex Trebek showed a segment of Hanks in costume as Fred Rogers for his new film that was opening that weekend, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” The contestants then they all stood there silently, buzzers in hand with no clue who they were looking at. Hanks couldn’t believe it.
“You are kidding me! They didn’t even have any wrong suggestions? Bing! Woody Harrelson? No. Bing! Mahershala Ali? No, I’m sorry,” Hanks marveled to the ABC late-night host on Monday in astonishment. “What was the name of the category? Washed up career choices for $800? Bad casting for $1000, Alex?”

It’s going to be a really rich week for Disney’s Frozen 2, so exhibitors expect a lot of popcorn sales.
Let’s start with the build of it all: The pic’s official weekend came in at $130.2M, which as we’ve been sayin’ is the best animated pic launch ever in November. Today, with 41% of K-12 schools out and 14% of colleges, I understand Monday will deliver around $16M for the sequel directed by Jennifer Lee- and Chris Buck. By the end of Thanksgiving, which will see business during the evening shows after dinner, Frozen 2 per industry estimates should stand at $200M stateside; that’s bolstered by all schools being off on Thursday and Friday. Don’t forget, Black Friday is one of the most lucrative moviegoing days of the year. Tack on a second estimated weekend of $84M, -35%, and Frozen 2 could climb to $284M in 10 days.

“Frozen II,” Disney’s follow-up to the pop culture phenomenon “Frozen” from 2013, brought in $8.5 million at the box office in Thursday night previews beginning at 6 p.m. It opens on over 4,300 screens this weekend.
The fall box office is finally set to heat up with the arrival of “Frozen II,” which the studio is projecting for an opening in the $100 million range, with trackers saying it should land between $105-115 million, though it could rise to $130 million if the excitement is as high as some trackers suspect. It opens opposite “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” which stars Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers, and the thriller “21 Bridges” starring Chadwick Boseman, both of which go wide in the last weekend before Thanksgiving.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, y'all, because everyone's favorite cardigan-wearing neighbor, Mister Rogers, is coming to the big screen. Tom Hanks bears an uncanny resemblance to Fred Rogers, aka Mister Rogers, in the biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. At first glance, you might even think he's the real deal, and that likeness is no coincidence. It turns out - get ready for this - Tom and Fred are related! Is your mind blown? Because same.
A recent discovery made by Ancestry.com shows that the two stars are sixth cousins and share the same great-great-great-great-great grandfather, Johannes Mefford. A CBS representative also confirmed the fun fact by using its database of over 20 billion online historical records.
On Nov. 17, Tom and wife Rita Wilson learned of the familial connection at the NYC premiere of A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. "Impossible," Rita said after Access revealed the tidbit. "No, you're pulling our leg." Tom was understandably just as amazed when he saw a photo of the shared lineage.

How enduring is “Frozen” fever?
Six years after audiences were first introduced to Princesses Anna and Elsa, Disney is returning to Arendelle this weekend with the big-screen debut of “Frozen 2. The original made history as the highest-grossing animated movie ever, raking in $1.2 billion worldwide in 2013. This time around, the powerful sisters are arriving in a theatrical environment that’s been increasingly chilly to sequels, prequels and spinoffs. As a result, the year-to-date box office is down over 6%, according to Comscore.
But there’s good reason to believe that unlike “Charlie’s Angels,” “Terminator: Dark Fate” and “Men in Black: International,” the second “Frozen” could be immune to the franchise fatigue that’s been plaguing part of Hollywood. The animated musical adventure anticipates a dazzling start above $100 million when it debuts in 4,400 North American theaters, a potential opening weekend record for Disney Animation (not including Pixar). After weeks of successive box office flops, Disney is once again coming to movie theaters’ rescue with the release of “Frozen II,” a long-awaited sequel expected to bring 2019’s biggest opening weekend since the release of “The Lion King” back in July.
Releasing on 4,300+ screens, “Frozen II” is projected by independent trackers for a $105-115 million opening, which would make it the first animated film to open above $100 million outside of the summer. Analysts who spoke with TheWrap say that they believe an opening as high as $130 million is possible.
Expectations for this sequel are through the roof. It’s not an exaggeration to say that “Frozen” has become the Disney classic for today’s generation of kids in the way that “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast” were for kids of the 90s. That has made “Frozen” into a brand nearly as valuable for Disney as Marvel or “Star Wars,...

Fred Rogers may be America’s favorite next-door neighbor, but the actor who portrays him, Tom Hanks, received praise of his own during a special screening of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” on Sunday at the Henry R. Luce Auditorium in New York City.
“It was a special experience, and I think we knew we were witnessing something really amazing,” director Marielle Heller told Variety about Hanks’ on-screen transformation into the man in the iconic red cardigan.
While stepping out on the carpet with her cast — including star Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson and Chris Cooper — Heller reflected on the making of the feel-good movie and the man who inspired it.
“Fred Rogers is the type of role model we don’t have a lot of right now, and we need one,” she said. “I joke that Fred Rogers was the one man that that could make me make a movie about men.

Fred Rogers, a Presbyterian minister from Pittsburgh better known simply as Mr. Rogers, is an unlikely movie star, and also an unlikely guy to be at the center of a movie. Mr. Rogers, after all, was the personification of niceness in a medium that prefers a little tension and conflict, a good guy who refuses to search for bad guys to tangle with.
But Morgan Neville’s exceptional documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” solved the problem last year by finding the doubt and pain at the heart of Mr. Rogers’ niceness, and by showing how much his purposefully cheesy “Land of Make Believe” in his long-running show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” was grappling with real-world problems.
