The Wonder Years is welcoming a familiar face in its latest episode, “A Star is Born,” as 30 Rock alum Jack McBrayer guest stars as Dean’s (Elisha Williams) guidance counselor and drama teacher, and we have your exclusive first look with a sneak peek clip. It seems that Dean is in the market for a new pastime as his adult narration (voiced by Don Cheadle) says, “Since my friends were busy and I didn’t want to spend my afternoons running mom’s errands, I went to the guidance counselor for help finding an after school activity.” Sitting across a desk from McBrayer’s Mr. Cox, Dean expresses his reason for visiting, and the counselor says, “I see you as more of a thespian, and you’re in luck because the drama teacher is looking for people for their upcoming production of Peter Pan.” (Credit: ABC/Matt Miller) But...

Patti Labelle has joined the cast of ABC’s The Wonder Years for Season 2 in the role of Shirley Williams, mother of Dulé Hill’s character Bill.
Shirley, who is a church choir director, is described as “sweet as she can be but has another side to her when choir members don’t quite hit the right notes.” Labelle is set for a two-episode arc as the character.
Whether or not the Godmother of Soul will perform with her musical TV family or bake any of her famous sweet potato pies is as yet unknown.

It’s been almost 35 years since audiences first sat down with the Arnolds, an all-American family living through the turbulent 1960s and ’70s. For viewers of the time, the 1960s still had a magic and allure that appealed to adults. It’s also a great example of why a reboot was worthwhile. For white audiences, that era means one thing, but for Black families the 1960s meant something else entirely. And it’s something creator Saladin K. Patterson isn’t shying away from in the new iteration of ABC’s “The Wonder Years.”

ABC’s new version of “The Wonder Years” immediately set itself apart from its predecessor during its premiere on Wednesday, right up through the final moments.
Even though the new “Wonder Years” centers on a middle-class Black family in 1968 Alabama and dives into topics like racism and desegregation in schools, the majority of the premiere episode is played with a lighter tone by showing that world through the eyes of 12-year-old Dean Williams (Elisha Williams). But that lightness grinds to a halt at the end of the episode, when an argument between Dean’s father, Bill (Dule Williams), and his baseball coach, Coach Long (Allen Maldonado), is interrupted by the news of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

The ‘passing of the torch‘ moments that we see in entertainment are pretty important most times since it’s the acknowledgment that one actor gives to the next in order to say ‘good luck, godspeed’ and much more as they welcome another individual into the genre or even the type of role that made them famous at one time. In the case of Fred Savage and Elisha Williams, it’s to be expected since Williams has been selected as the next focal point for the reboot of The Wonder Years, which means no one other than Savage would be right to pass

Lee Daniels’ upcoming reboot of “The Wonder Years” has found its new Kevin Arnold… er, Dean.
The ABC pilot cast Elisha “Ej” Williams to play Dean, the 12-year-old boy that serves as the center of the show, much the same way Fred Savage’s Kevin Arnold did in the original “Wonder Years.”
Here’s how ABC describes the character: “”Dean is an inquisitive and hopeful 12-year-old kid coming of age in a turbulent time. It’s 1968 in Montgomery, Alabama — and Dean is trying to figure out his place within his Black family and the world at large. Though a little insecure, a tad awkward and a bit self-conscious, he is determined to make his mark on the world around him.”
Williams joins Saycon Sengbloh, who will play his mother, Lillian, in the pilot.
Put into development last summer, “The Wonder Years” reboot will be set in the same era as the original 1980s series,...
