“I was definitely really excited to tackle the union stuff,” says Morgan Spector of what storyline from the second season of “The Gilded Age” he was most excited to sink his teeth into. In the latest episodes of the HBO drama series, his industrialist character George Russell must confront rising unrest amongst his factory workers in Pittsburgh. The actor relished this arc because the series was able to depict a period of American history that was “so dramatic” and “incredibly violent,” one that is “under-known and under-discussed” in United States’ history. Watch our exclusive video interview.

“Super/Man,” a documentary about the life of Christopher Reeve, will hit the big screen in the fall.
The film, which was widely embraced at Sundance and sold to Warner Bros. Discovery for roughly $15 million, will play in select theaters on Sept. 21 followed by an encore presentation on Reeve’s birthday, Sept. 25. The Warners-owned DC Studios is collaborating with Fathom Events on the theatrical release.
It’s not clear if “Super/Man” will get a wider, traditional theatrical release at a later date. Plans for the film’s international rollout have yet to be announced.
“On behalf of not only Warner Bros., but also my colleagues at DC, HBO and CNN, it’s an honor to be a part of bringing Christopher Reeve and his singular legacy to audiences again,” Jeff Goldstein, president of domestic distribution, said. “It was at this very studio where he made us all believe a man could fly,...

Armen Nahapetian wants the world to know: “I’m not AI.” The 16-year-old actor is gaining notice, but not only for playing a teenage version of Joaquin Phoenix’s titular worrywart in Ari Aster’s epic dark comedy “Beau Is Afraid.” He added the disclaimer to his Instagram bio because people keep thinking he’s not a real person, but instead a digitally de-aged Phoenix.
“I went to the movie theater a few weeks ago, and one of the employees was pointing at the poster saying, ‘Oh, my God, you’re real!’” Nahapetian recalls, speaking with Variety.
The main poster art features four versions of Beau, all posing in shimmering gray satin pajamas. There’s a Phoenix wearing a farmer’s hat, a Phoenix sporting male pattern baldness, a Phoenix buried under wrinkles — and a smooth-faced Nahapetian. The theater employee’s confusion may seem absurd, but the reasoning makes sense:...

Refresh for updates: Big stuff expected here this morning at CinemaCon in Las Vegas as Warner Bros struts its 2023 slate.
Teeing off this morning was Warner Bros Domestic Distribution Chief Jeff Goldstein and Internatioinal Distribution Cheif Andrew Cripps jogging onstage all clad in pink suits, in celebration to the studio’s late summer anticipated hit, Barbie.
“By a show of hands who wore it better, Andrew or me?” beamed Goldstein
“As Barbie says, everybody looks better in pink!” the distrib exec added.
“I’m not sure, Jeff, ” added Cripps.
“Hello, everybody, we’re both tickled pink,” Goldstein continued to pun.
The two touted the success of this past weekend’s Evil Dead Rise, which made its pivot from Max streaming service to an exclusive theatrical window. They also took time to reflect on the legacy of former distrib colleague, MGM’s Erik Lomis. This led into a 100 Years studio sizzle reel with flashes of Elvis,...

There's been much talk about whether "Ted Lasso" will end after season 3, but it doesn't take a psychic to imagine that the show's characters might stick around somehow — even if it's without Coach Lasso himself. One cast member who would be happy to keep playing her character indefinitely is Hannah Waddingham, who won an Emmy for her portrayal of Rebecca Welton, owner of the Premier League football club, AFC Richmond.
Season 3 of "Ted Lasso" has seen Rebecca living out moments that her mother's psychic predicted would happen, such as a green matchbook showing up at a pivotal moment or someone uttering the nonsensical phrase "sh*te in nining armor." Waddingham herself is less certain of the future, in part because that's how "Ted Lasso" star Jason Sudekis is rolling.

The 2023 National Association of Broadcasters Show, which wrapped Wednesday in Las Vegas, attracted an estimated 65,000 delegates, according to show organizers, which many viewed as a healthy number for a post-pandemic show.
The attendance numbers marked a notable rise following Nab’s return to an in-person event in 2022, which counted 52,468 delegates, though it was still well below its last show before the lockdown, which drew 91,000 attendees in 2019.
Artificial intelligence was arguably the most widespread topic this year, as Nab marked its centennial. As the potential of AI rapidly evolves, it’s a topic that clearly will continue to cause significant anxiety, as well as staggering potential opportunities.
Generally, it was an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary year on the exhibition floor. From a tech standpoint, there was a large number of new and evolving tools for all sorts of cloud-based remote workflows. And while there’s still a lot to understand...

Spoiler Alert: The following story reveals major plot points from Ted Lasso’s latest episode “Sunflowers.”
AFC Richmond has been struggling plenty in Apple TV+ hit series Ted Lasso in Season 3, but things get a lot lighter in episode 6 titled “Sunflowers.” The team heads to Amsterdam for a break with Ted (Jason Sudeikis) declaring a mini-break for everyone following another loss.
If the writers had told fans in Season 1 that Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) and Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) would eventually become friends, nobody would’ve believed it. But here they are, exploring Amsterdam on bikes searching for a windmill. Both men have grown and evolved and, thanks to Zava (Maximilian Osinski), are now buddies.
Dunster spoke to Deadline about working closely with Goldstein, enjoying Amsterdam for the first time and how the episode will change things moving forward.
Deadline: “Sunflowers” is quite a different episode from the others. What was it like to shoot?...

Since its debut in 2020, Ted Lasso has become a cultural phenomenon that has taken the world by storm. The show has captured the hearts of millions with its positive message, heartwarming characters, and hilarious storylines. Ted Lasso’s cast recently visited the White House for a sit-down with President Biden and the First Lady, Jill Biden. One of the show’s stars, Brett Goldstein, has opened up about the experience, and it’s safe to say that it was “awkward,” to say the least.

Dungeons & Dragons series: Drew Crevello joins the party as showrunner of the live-action adaptation
The Dungeons & Dragons series is gaining another party member in Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) as the showrunner of the live-action adaptation for Paramount+. Crevello will work closely with Rawson Marshall Thurber, who wrote the pilot script and will direct the first episode. The eight-episode series is a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures, with eOne leading the charge.
According to Deadline’s previous report, “Adapting Dungeons & Dragons for television has been a major focus for eOne under President of Global Television Michael Lombardo following the company’s 2019 acquisition by Hasbro. The live-action series has been tipped to be the studio’s largest-scope TV project ever, potentially launching a Dungeons & Dragons universe spanning multiple scripted and unscripted shows.”

“Ted Lasso” Emmy winner Brett Goldstein may star in one of the most feel-good TV series, but his personal tastes twist a little darker.
Goldstein gushed over his fandom for “Twin Peaks,” explaining in a Variety cover story that he and his sister crashed their father watching the 1990 premiere and became “obsessed” with the David Lynch series.
“We were so scared that I moved the mattress from my room into my sister’s and put it next to her bed. We were obsessed with the show and so genuinely terrified that we could scare ourselves just by saying ‘Bob,'” Goldstein said, referring to the series’ supernatural main antagonist.
But it was 1992’s prequel film “Fire Walk with Me” that truly left the young Goldstein stunned.
“When they made [movie] ‘Fire Walk with Me,’ it genuinely took us a week to watch it because we could only watch it like 10-minute chunks at a time.

Brett Goldstein has recalled the early years of his career when casting directors would typecast him “terrorist” roles.
Before the 42-year-old British actor found his breakthrough success starring as team curmudgeon Roy Kent on Apple TV’s heartwarming sports comedy Ted Lasso, he spent years trying to pursue dramatic roles.
Speaking to Variety, Goldstein explained: “All I would ever get audition offers for was terrorists. I guess they see my headshot and go, ‘Well, he looks like a terrorist!’”
It wasn’t until later when he finally realised he wasn’t having a “good time” in dramatic acting, that he said he finally gave in to his secret passion for standup.
“I f***ing stormed it,” he remembered of his first standup performance. “The adrenaline was so powerful that I had a great gig, and I was like, ‘Wow! F***!’”

The phenomenon of at least three and sometimes even four performers earning Emmy nominations from the same situation comedy series used to be pretty rate. But over the course of the past 13 years, with the increase in the number of category nominees to as many as eight, it’s grown increasingly common. In fact, it’s happened 7 times since 2010 in the supporting actor in a comedy series lineup and three times since 2017 among supporting comedy actresses. And in 2021 and 2022, thanks to “Ted Lasso,” there have been same-series threesomes on both sides.
Looking ahead to this year, the show with the best chance of placing three nominees in a supporting comedy series lineup is “Abbott Elementary” and its 1-2-3 punch of last year’s Emmy champ and current frontrunner Sheryl Lee Ralph, NAACP Image Award victor Janelle James and Lisa Ann Walter. They are right now holding down the 1, 3 and 7 spots,...

Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tyler James Williams are looking to make some Emmy history this year as the current comedy supporting actor/actress category frontrunners for their performances in the ABC comedy hit “Abbott Elementary.” Ralph of course memorably won last year – complete with a powerful singing acceptance speech – and is going for two in a row after also taking the comedy supporting actress trophy at the Critics Choice Awards in January. Williams, who won a Golden Globe earlier this year, is looking to keep Brett Goldstein from pulling off an Emmy three-peat for “Ted Lasso” after being nominated a year ago.
Should both Ralph and Williams triumph, it would be the first time that performers of color won in the comedy supporting categories in the same year. In fact, it would be the first time African Americans took home an Emmy statue in the same year in any supporting series category – drama included.

Last week on “Ted Lasso,” the mighty UFC Richmond went down to West Ham United (1-4) in a fierce contest. And the scene is set for opposing coaches to go head-to-head at the 2023 Emmy Awards — albeit in a friendlier competition.
In the third season of the Apple TV+ comedy, AFC Richmond is still coached by the loveable Ted (Jason Sudeikis) with assistant coaches Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) and Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt). The team started as underdogs, but landing star recruit Zava (Maximilian Osinski) rockets the Greyhounds up the standings. Former Richmond assistant coach Nate (Nick Mohammad), meanwhile, has taken the reigns at West Ham, who have enjoyed a dominant season, with “The Wonder Kid” looking to put his old club in their place.
The first four episodes of the season culminated in a grudge match between the two clubs. After conceding two goals late in the first half, Richmond fell apart.

This post contains spoilers for "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves."
Somewhat amazingly, "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" currently ranks as one of the best-reviewed movies of 2023. For what could have been a cheap franchise play, directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley actually managed to deliver the goods, thanks in no small part to an A-list cast led by the likes of Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez. But there was another A-lister who came as a big (technically little) surprise to audiences: Bradley Cooper.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” took on a big challenge as the first official D&d story to roll initiative in actual movie theaters, as opposed to playing out on tabletops and the “theater of the mind.” How the film looks — from oozes and owlbears to the towers of Castle Never to the magic missiles flung by wizards — needed to harken back to the fun of the game and work as a live-action fantasy with realistic visual logic. This was a particular challenge when it came to the many, many spells available to magic practitioners in the Forgotten Realms. The spells have a long history of what they’re designed to look like, but there was no guarantee that those beloved designs would work inside the film.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves should not work nearly as well as it does. It’s an adaptation of a game whose heyday was forty years ago, in a genre that spits out three flops for every success – lest we forget, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings was preceded by a Dungeons and Dragons adaptation that even hardcore fans of the game are loathe to revisit.
And yet, this new D&d adventure is a hoot, an imaginative and fun yarn that will please longtime Dungeon Masters while keeping the unfamiliar engaged. It has enough wit and charm to be mentioned in the same sentence as The Princess Bride, even if it can’t quite capture the epic highs of Rob Reiner’s classic.
The film opens with thieves Edgin (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) in an icy prison, appealing for pardon. There’s just enough time...

Roy Kent is here, there and every-f—ing-where, and Brett Goldstein can be all over the Emmy annals soon. The “Ted Lasso” star is gunning for a rare three-peat in Best Comedy Supporting Actor, which has not been accomplished since Jeremy Piven did it 15 years ago.
With 5/1 odds, Goldstein is currently in second place behind “Abbott Elementary’s” Tyler James Williams (9/2), who’s coming off of a Golden Globe win in January. The only time the pair had ever faced off was at last year’s Emmys, which saw Goldstein pick up his second straight statuette.
But don’t be surprised if Goldstein starts inching upward as the third season of “Ted Lasso,” which premiered March 15, rolls out. Roy has been a fan favorite from the jump and Goldstein, who overcame a four-way vote-split in 2021, already has had lots of material to work with as Roy deals with his and Keeley’s (Juno Temple) breakup.

“He’s here! He’s there! He’s every f***ing where!” This chant is used to greet the fictional Roy Kent in Apple TV‘s hit show Ted Lasso. However, these days it could also be used to describe Roy’s real-life counterpart Brett Goldstein, whose fame has skyrocketed thanks to his appearance as the foul-mouthed but lovable footballer.
Ted Lasso has been a critical part of Goldstein’s career. However, it’s entertaining to know he didn’t have much hope for its success at first.

Ted Lasso follows a Midwestern American football coach on his journey across the pond to lead an English soccer team. While Ted knows little about the country he’s living in or the sport he’s supposedly guiding professional players through, he knows a lot about life.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves opened to an honorable enough $38.5 million at the domestic box office, enough to take out John Wick: Chapter 4 and top the chart.
The big-budget movie — based on Hasbro’s fantasy tabletop game — came in ahead of expectations but will still need strong legs throughout April and into May in order to launch a new movie franchise for Paramount and eOne after costing $150 million to produce before marketing.
Dungeons & Dragons certainly has that chance: it earned stellar reviews and an A- CinemaScore from audiences. Upcoming spring breaks and the Easter holiday will be another advantage. But adapting games has always been tricky business. Last year, Sony’s Uncharted debuted to $44 million domestically on its way to ultimately being considered a success.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”]
A good “Dungeons & Dragons” session always features some memorable NPCs (that’s a “non-playable character” for you newbies) and supporting characters for the central party to encounter. In the new film “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” our heroes come across plenty of allies and enemies, but none make quite as immediate an impression as Marlomen, the ex-lover of barbarian Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) who is played in an unexpected one-scene cameo by Mr. Jackson Maine himself: Bradley Cooper.
The scene is a delightful surprise for many reasons, starting with the fact that Marlomen is a diminutive halfling, only reaching the ripped Holga’s belly button. Then there’s a fact that he’s pretty clearly patterned off of the Hobbits from “Lord of the Rings,” living in a cottage that brings The Shire immediately to mind.
But, while there’s definitely a kick from...

A month mostly filled with successful sequels and franchise installments comes to an end with an unexpectedly promising original. Not wholly original, as “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is based on the 1974 table-top role-playing game which counts as its own genre. However, the picture is closest in spirit to “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.”
It is an IP sell with plenty of Easter Eggs and in-jokes for fans of the brand. However, it’s first and foremost a rousing, crowd-pleasing action comedy filled with a game cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant that plays for those who play the game or those who have merely heard of it via pop culture osmosis.

In the latest episode of Crew Call, we talk to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors, scribes and EPs John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein about the vision they sold to Paramount to make the dark and dingy world of the role playing game, not just fun, but funnier. And even more so, a broad film that appealed to the die-hards and non-die hards alike. That take seems to be working after a rapturous SXSW world premiere and critical and audience scores well over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Per box office sources right now, the Paramount & eOne movie is headed to a $40M weekend start, at the top end of where tracking saw it, after a $16M Friday (that includes $5.6M previews). Meanwhile, the second weekend of Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4 is eyeing $8.2M, and a $30M take, -59% for a running cume of $124.6M.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses an unannounced cameo in the film “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” which is currently playing in theaters.
For “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” writer-directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley pulled from the expansive trove of creatures and lore created over the 50-year history of the Dungeons & Dragons role playing game. There are paladins and sorcerers, red wizards and owlbears, bards and barbarians — all of them written by Goldstein and Daley and performed by Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Daisy Head with the same good-natured pluck that has imbued the countless campaigns waged by the game’s players.
Throughout the film, the roguish bard, Edgin (Pine), talks with the gruff warrior, Holga (Rodriguez), about Holga’s ex, Mariamin, for whom she’s still harboring feelings. At one point in the characters’ journey, Holga decides...

Plot: A thief and his team find themselves on an epic quest, one putting him in search of his daughter. Monsters, mayhem, and more ensue – with a healthy dose of humor.
Review: In this year of sequels, we have something a little different but very familiar to many. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, directed by John Francis Daley (who you may remember from Freaks & Geeks) and Jonathan Goldstein, is another big-screen adaptation of the popular interactive game. The last time a D&d movie played in the cinema was the less-than-stellar 2000 feature starring Justin Whalin and Jeremy Irons, which made little of an impression. It certainly didn’t meet the expectations of critics or audiences. At all. The upcoming film stars Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez as Edgin and Holga, hapless thieves on a desperate journey. When the Ted Lasso cast got invited to visit the White House, Brett Goldstein admitted that despite it being a “privilege” to be there, there was one ongoing issue he had to deal with: He didn’t know what to do with his hands.
“It was amazing and it was an honor and it was a privilege. But I’ve never been more aware of my hands than I was all day,” Goldstein recalled while visiting Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday.
He added, “Like, what do you do with your hands at the White House? I didn’t know how to stand. I didn’t know how to sit. I was like, ‘What is a person?’ I lost my mind. It’s so serious. It’s the fucking the White House. I’m really trying not to swear, desperately trying not to make jokes. Like, I’ve never worked hard in my life.

If 2023 is any indication, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have leveled up.
The writing-and-directing duo’s fantasy adventure film, which is based on the beloved tabletop role-playing game, has been met with rave reviews from critics and audiences, and most impressively, they’ve managed to pull off the impossible by satisfying both D&d die-hards and newcomers to the world. Furthermore, Goldstein and Daley even have a story credit on one of the buzziest superhero films of all time, The Flash, which finally releases in June after first being announced in 2014. (The pair left the project as writer-directors in 2019 due to creative differences.)
Daley is most known for his role as the D&d-playing Sam Weir on the short-lived cult classic Freaks and Geeks, and when Paramount’s marketing department pitched a D&d-related reunion among Daley’s character,...

An unlikely partnership was formed during the third episode of Ted Lasso Season 3, when Roy Kent offered to train “pre-Madonna” Jamie Tartt to be an even better footballer than AFC Richmond’s newest recruit, Zava.
But before fans get a glimpse of their training sessions in Episode 4 (streaming Wednesday, April 5), we wanted to know what portrayers Brett Goldstein and Phil Dunster thought about this new arrangement — specifically, who these sessions will benefit more. Whereas Jamie’s need here is quite transparent, Roy’s motivations are less obvious. Is he just being a good coach? A good friend? Or is...

This post contains spoilers for "Ted Lasso" season 3.
Roy and Keeley are no more. The "Ted Lasso" power couple spent the first two seasons of the series falling in love, only to part ways thanks to what basically amounts to scheduling conflicts hinted at in the show's season 2 finale — they're both in a period of career growth, which means there's no time to be together. The news that they split was not well-received by fans of the grumpy-and-sunshine couple, and Roy's niece, Phoebe, did not take it particularly well either. Yet if you ask the show's cast, no one took it harder than Roy himself, actor and series writer Brett Goldstein.
"There are no Roy/Keeley stans out there who are upset as Brett Goldstein, the biggest Roy/Keeley stan of all," Goldstein's co-star and series co-creator Brendan Hunt told the Today show in the wake of the surprising...

This year's SXSW Film Festival opened with the star-studded world premiere of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" at the historic Paramount Theater. Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Daisy Head, Rege-Jean Page, and writer/directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were in attendance and got to bask in the glow of the explosive audience reaction.
SXSW audiences are notoriously excitable, and when that 2000+ strong crowd sees a comedy they like, the very walls shake with their laughter and applause, as evidenced by this glowing review from /Film's Jacob Hall. "Dungeons & Dragons" played very well, and that's a testament to the approach Goldstein and Daley took in crafting a movie that can work for an audience that has never rolled a D20 in their lives while also throwing in some big Easter eggs for the hardcore fans.

This weekend’s box office race sees Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves taking on John Wick: Chapter 4 in what’s bound to be an interesting contest.
Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Dungeons & Dragons is based on Hasbro’s influential role-playing game and features a star-packed cast led by Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head and Hugh Grant.
Tracking suggests the movie will open to a somewhat subdued $30 million domestically, but many box office analysts believe that number will come in higher thanks to strong early audience reaction and stellar reviews commending the movie’s smart sense of adventure and jovial spirit.
Paramount and eOne, which is owned by Hasbro, co-produced and co-financed the big-budget fantasy pic, which cost a reported $150 million to make before marketing. The film also launches in more than 50 markets overseas, including the U.

Change is afoot in “Ted Lasso” Season 3, but one plot point in the early episodes is enough to shock the characters into silent horror: Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Keeley (Juno Temple) have broken up.
The opposites-attract couple got together in Season 1, after Keeley broke up with AFC Richmond’s resident cocky pretty boy Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) and found herself both attracted to and appreciated by the older team captain Roy. It’s a romance that viewers at the time didn’t necessarily see coming, but rooted for passionately once it became a possibility. Roy and Keeley dealt in honesty, maturity, and support. Roy was the antithesis of Jamie’s early-20s bravado, and with him Keeley relied on the keen emotional intelligence and bright ideas that Jamie overlooked in her. The couple didn’t let a few road bumps stop them from pursuing something special, because they recognized that...

If you’ve ever played Dungeons &. Dragons, you know it’s all about the melee combat. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves rolled a 20 by enlisting veteran stuntman Brad Martin to oversee the stunts and fights. Martin has worked on some of the biggest action franchises in cinema, including The Expendables, Underworld, xXx, The Matrix, and more. He was George Clooney’s stunt double for Batman & Robin, along with five other films. A comrade in arms with noted stuntmen-turned-directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, Martin is forging his own path as one of Hollywood’s top creators of action.
Den of Geek: You’ve been in the business for over 30 years. What new challenges did Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves bring for you?
Brad: I’ve done a few films with a lot of CGI and working with computer-generated creatures.

Fans of the long-running role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons have known for decades how the experience of playing the game is character-based and acting-friendly. In addition to fostering camaraderie between friends or family members who play together, it encourages imagination and improvisation, skills any actor learns to develop and foster as they continue to practice their craft.
It's no surprise, then, that more and more actors are getting into the D&d craze. One actor who's found himself quite literally and figuratively getting into it is Chris Pine, who portrays the bard-class Edgin Darvis in "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." Pine's character in the film is both traditionally heroic and charmingly self-effacing, allowing the actor to better integrate into the ensemble nature of the film and its RPG source material.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” seems like an absolutely delightful movie, and we can’t wait to see it. And helping us with that assessment considerably is an absolutely delightful new ad for the film that debuted earlier today.
The ad doesn’t actually contain any footage from the movie — you can watch one of those here, in case you need to see it again (you do). Instead, it hilariously reunites three of the stars of “Freaks and Geeks” to finally finish up that game of “Dungeons & Dragons” they played all the way back in the show’s final episode.
Now, we assume if you’re reading this you know what the previous paragraph is talking about, but just in case, “Freaks and Geeks” was a hugely influential single camera comedy-drama that ran for a single season from 1999-2000. Created by future “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow,...

When it was announced that a new "Dungeons & Dragons" movie was on the horizon, expectations were that this iteration would attempt to take the fantasy adventure RPG to a new level of respectability. There seemed to be a promise of more high fantasy and epic storytelling that would take the material more seriously. After the full trailer came out, it's abundantly clear that there's a grandiose scale to "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" featuring plenty of creatures and obstacles for our heroes to navigate. But there's a sense of absurdity that proves the dragon tongue is still kept firmly planted in cheek.
If it all seems a little too ridiculous, the new trailer is filled with a surprising amount of critical praise for the film, including /Film's Jacob Hall who called the film "a fantasy adventure unashamed to be about how we define love and family" in his review out of SXSW.

We’re just one week away from the March 31st theatrical release date of Paramount Pictures’ Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is based on the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game franchise – and just in case the positive reviews (there’s a bunch of them quoted in the final trailer) haven’t convinced someone to see the movie, Paramount is now using the Freaks and Geeks connection to try to lure in viewers. In the new ad that you can check out in the Twitter embed below, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves director John Francis Daley is reunited with Samm Levine and Martin Starr, his co-stars from the short-lived but beloved TV series Freaks and Geeks, which went off the air twenty-three years ago after just one season.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley's upcoming fantasy film "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," due in theaters on March 31, will be the fourth live-action film to be based on the celebrated role-playing game first published by Gary Gygax and Dave Arenson in 1974. The game version of "Dungeons & Dragons" has had a colorful and fraught history, offering a popular activity that both nerds and metalheads could enjoy, while also often attracting the ire of right-wing censorship groups who felt its themes of magic and pretend were somehow damaging the minds of the nation's youth.
It remains popular to this day, periodically appearing in popular media. It was featured in an episode of the short-lived but beloved 1999 TV series "Freaks and Geeks" which, maybe not incidentally, starred co-director Daley when he was 14. More recently, the characters on "Stranger Things" played a "Dungeons & Dragons" campaign, ostensibly bringing the game...

At its heart, "Dungeons & Dragons" is an improv exercise. Put six people in a room together, give them a common goal, and sooner or later they'll embrace the fantasy so long as everybody else is playing along. There's a magic to tabletop that rewards anybody willing to roll with the punches, regardless of where the dice fall. "D&d" isn't the only tabletop role-playing game of its kind, and it likely isn't even the best. But it is the best known, which at least ensures that everybody knows what they are getting into.
Chris Pine said at the screening of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" at SXSW that "D&d" "is an actor's game." Pine plays the bard Edgin, a good-natured rapscallion of the classic school. Bards in D&d can do a little of everything; succeeding in the role means backing up teammates with songs, making smart use of low-level spells,...

For Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves star Chris Pine, it all started with the story.
“I have to like the script,” Pine told The Hollywood Reporter Sunday evening at the film’s Los Angeles premiere about what made him say yes to his role as the lovable, lute-playing bard Edgin. “For me, it was the fact that [Dungeons & Dragons] felt earnest and heartfelt and grounded. It didn’t feel jaded or cynical or meta or postmodern. It just was big-budget, old fashioned moviemaking. The kind of feeling of The Princess Bride and Willow and The NeverEnding Story, and all the stuff that I watched as a kid.”
With a screenplay by Michael Gilio and director duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein — and story by Gilio and Chris McKay — Honor Among Thieves is rooted in comedy, unlike some of the darker, more serious fantasy films in recent years. The...
