Dubai, April 20 (Ians) She may have led the Indian Women’s T20 squad in international matches on and off since 2019 but England captain Heather Knight says Smriti Mandhana found the pressure too much and struggled to manage captaincy during the recently-concluded Women’s Premier League (Wpl).
Mandhana found captaincy “quite tricky” during the Wpl and struggled to manage the hype that came with the role, her Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate Heather Knight has said.
Knight, speaking on the latest 100% Cricket Podcast, suggested the hype surrounding the inaugural edition of the Wpl and the pressure that comes with captaining a high-profile team affected Mandhana, whose side won just twice in eight matches.
Mandhana was charged with leading a side comprising international heavyweights in Ellyse Perry, Sophie Devine, Dane van Niekerk, Megan Schutt and Knight herself, but Rcb still finished fourth out of five teams.

Johannesburg, March 16 (Ians) South Africa’s all-rounder Dane van Niekerk has announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket, ending a career that spanned more than 14 years.
Dane represented South Africa in 107 ODIs, 86 T20Is and a single Test match against India in 2014, with her last international appearance coming in 2021 before a broken ankle left her sidelined.
Her decision to retire from international cricket comes after her controversial non-selection in South Africa’s squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup in February. Dane failed to pass the fitness test by 18 seconds and was eventually left out of the squad.
In her absence, Sune Luus led the team to a runners-up finish, after losing to eventual six-time champions Australia in the final at Cape Town. Dane had hinted through an Instagram story on Saturday that she could be quitting international cricket.
“It is with great sadness that I announce my retirement from international cricket.

During the player auction held earlier in the month, Bangalore made some big-ticket purchases in terms of overseas players.
They got in Australia’s premier all-rounder Ellyse Perry and her pace counterpart Megan Schutt along with Wbbl regular Erin Burns, as well as England, and New Zealand skippers Heather Knight, and Sophie Devine, apart from South Africa’s leg-spin all-rounder Dane van Niekerk.
But who gets into the four overseas slots out of six marquee players in the playing eleven throughout the 22-game tournament starting from March 4 and running till March 26 is a question which will keep the Bangalore think-tank on their toes, something which was agreed by Mike Hesson, Director of Cricket at Rcb.
"It’s something which will be relevant throughout the whole tournament. But when you look at the programme and see four games in the first six days, it’s highly likely all six will play a role at some stage.

East London (South Africa), Feb 3 (Ians) India captain Harmanpreet Kaur insisted that the team had some good performances in the tri-series despite losing the final to South Africa by five wickets.
India had elected to bat first on a slow pitch at Buffalo Park but managed to put in just 109/4 in their 20 overs. Harleen Deol top-scored with 46 but took 56 balls to make those runs while Harmanpreet made 21 off 22 balls.
Moreover, Harmanpreet needed the attention of the physio and had to go off the field for some time too.
“Body is fine. It will get better with rest. We have got some good performances. Unfortunately, we were not able to bat the way we wanted and the bowlers did well,” she said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
Among the positives for India, off-spin all-rounder Deepti Sharma showed she was in stellar form, taking the Player of the Series award for making...

East London (South Africa), Jan 19 (Ians) Ahead of the start of the women’s T20I tri-series, South Africa skipper Sune Luss said her team is aware of the combinations which India can field against them at Buffalo Park Stadium on Thursday night.
In the tri-series running till February 2, the 2016 T20 World Cup champion West Indies is the third team in the series, South Africa last played against India in the shortest format of the game in March 2021, where they recorded a famous 2-1 series win away from home in Lucknow.
That series victory helped the Proteas improve their win ratio to 33 against India, with four wins in 13 matches that also includes a no result. Cut to now, and with the Women’s T20 World Cup starting next month, South Africa are keen to finetune their preparations for the mega event starting from the tri-series opener against India.

Johannesburg, March 22 (Ians) Cricket South Africa (CSA) takes the greatest pleasure in congratulating the South African women's team on its historic white ball 'double' triumph on their current tour of India after they clinched the T20 International series in Lucknow on Sunday after its Odi series win.
Having won the Odi series 4-1, South African women took an unassailable 2-0 series lead in the three-match series when they won the second match by six wickets in a thriller that went down to the final ball.
It is the first time the South African women's team has beaten India in a T20 series.
"Our ladies continue to go from strength to strength. Winning the series with a match to spare and making it five wins in a row across the two white ball formats is a huge achievement and reflects well on everybody involved," commented CSA acting chief executive Pholetsi Moseki.

Lucknow, March 1 (Ians) South African women's cricket captain Sune Luus believes her team will be stepping into the unknown during their tour to India this month.
Coach Hilton Moreeng and his squad arrived in the sub-continent over the weekend to play the hosts in five One-day and three Twenty20 Internationals here. All the matches will take place in a bio-secure environment (Bse).
The South Africans are currently in quarantine for six days, and that will be followed by two days of training ahead of the first Odi on March 7 at the beautiful Ekana Stadium.
"Coming to India is always exciting. We're never sure what to expect when we get here. For this trip, we've never played at the ground, we don't know what it looks like or what the conditions will be like. I think it will be the same for India as well. Sydney, Nov 15 (Ians) Australia's Ashleigh Gardner on Sunday suffered a suspected concussion during Sydney Sixers' 14-run defeat against Adelaide Strikers during the ongoing edition of the Women's Big Bash League (Wbbl).
Gardner was ruled out mid-way during what was Sixers' fourth consecutive loss in the tournament and was replaced by wicketkeeper Maddy Darke after diving in an attempt to stop a boundary during the Sixers' fielding innings. Her head did not hit the ground, but the effects of the jarring contact meant she came off the field to be assessed in line with Cricket Australia's concussion protocols. The on-duty doctor then ruled her out of the game.
"She's not 100 per cent, but she is going to get some tests and hopefully she can play next week," she said. "She understands what her body needs," said Gardner's teammate at Sixers Dane van Niekerk.
