Prime Video adult animated series The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy features not just one Culkin — with Kieran Culkin voicing one of the main characters — but all five brothers working together for the first time, and it turns out Natasha Lyonne helped make it all happen.
Lyonne, who executive produced and co-stars in the show, has been longtime friends with both Kieran and Macaulay Culkin, “so Kieran came up for the role of Dr. Plowp and in a crazy turn of events, the bird alien [character that he plays] had four brothers [in the script] before he was cast. So he had the four brothers already and when we cast Kieran we were like, ‘You have four brothers! That’s ridiculous, what fate,'” showrunner Cirocco Dunlap told The Hollywood Reporter at the Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday. “Kieran was the one who suggested it, he was like, ‘We could get my brothers’ and I was like,...

When filmmaker Jonathan Glazer sent sound designer Johnnie Burn the script for his Holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest” a year before production even began, Glazer laid down clear guidelines for the role sound was going to play: He did not want to share images that audiences knew and he wasn’t going to show the familiar, devastating scenes of the Polish concentration camp. He wanted to reflect everything through sound.
Glazer told Burn, who was also sound designer on “Poor Things,” that he wanted him to become an expert on the sounds that would have emanated from the camp in 1943.
The Oscar-nominated film centers around Commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Huller) who live a dream life with their children in a seemingly-perfect home — except that the house and garden border a concentration camp.

Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” only the fourth film in the 24-year feature career of the British director of “Sexy Beast,” “Birth” and “Under the Skin,” is in some ways the unlikeliest of this year’s 10 Best Picture nominees. A purposefully dispassionate chronicle of a subject — the Holocaust — unusually approached with enormous passion, it follows the daily life of a German family that lives in Poland during World War II.
The father, Rudolph Höss, is the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, which sits just over their garden and from which screams, shouts and smoke occasionally disturb the lives of Rudolph (Christian Friedel), his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) and their children.
The camera never goes over the wall and into the camp, and the film takes place without a single closeup, as if the camera itself doesn’t want to get too close to these people. Though the...

After Danny Cron graduated from the California Institute of Arts in 2018, he did exactly what his instructors at the Valencia school recommended: he booked showcases in hopes of finding his first big acting gig.
But when the representation didn’t materialize and the roles remained unattainable, he was at a loss over what to do next. “I’m from Santa Fe, New Mexico. My mom was a teacher, my dad was a lawyer. I could not be further removed from this industry,” said the 29-year-old Cron. “You think, why am I not there yet? What’s going on? It’s almost like a scarcity mindset, or at least for me, a sense of panic. Because it’s really scary and intimidating to be out here. It can be very alluring when you find programs that claim they’re going to take care of all of it for you.”

Rudolph Isley, a founding member of the musical group, the Isley Brothers, has died at age 84.
“There are no words to express my feelings and the love I have for my brother. Our family will miss him. But I know he’s in a better place,” said Ronald Isley in a statement.
Rudolph first started singing in church with his brothers Ronald and O’Kelly Isley. He was just a teenager when the group’s hit song, “Shout,” debuted in the 1950s.
The brothers then released “Twist and Shout” in the 1960s, which the Beatles used as the closing song on their debut album.
Other popular Isley Brothers songs include “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You),” “It’s Your Thing” and “Fight the Power (Part 1).”
Rudolph eventually left the group in 1989 after O’Kelly’s death. He became a Christian minister and was inducted into the Rock and...

A beach and fishing community reels in the wake of a fatal shark attack that has everyone on edge. How will order be restored? You don’t have to make Jaws inferences; the new HBO documentary After the Bite does the work for you. “I’m not exaggerating, it was like Jaws,” exclaims a local fisherman of a particularly shark-infested day. We see a drive-in theater marquee that advertises a double feature of Steven Spielberg’s proto-blockbuster with one of his later spectacles, Jurassic Park. The doc makes note of its fictional forefather.

Melissa Gilbert and husband Timothy Busfield bought a fixer-upper cabin in the Catskills in 2019. One day, as they were getting settled in and doing some work on their new home, a man they’d never seen before pulled up in a truck. It was the couple’s new neighbor, and he was not what they’d expected.

Rose Byrne is the latest Bridesmaids star to say she would be down to return for a sequel of the hit comedy.
In an interview with People magazine, published online Thursday, the Neighbors actress said she would “of course” do a follow-up to the 2011 film, which also starred Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper.
She continued, “If all the girls were in, I absolutely would.”
But Byrne did note that because the first movie was so successful, it would be a “hard act to follow.” Adding, “It was so magical and so beloved.”
The Paul Feig-directed film sees Annie (Wiig) go to great lengths, no matter how crazy they may be, to be the best maid of honor she can be for her best friend Lillian (Rudolph). But everything starts to turn to chaos as she leads Lillian and the group of bridesmaids down...

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress Adeline Rudolph is going from Riverdale to Outworld for New Line‘s Mortal Kombat 2. Rudolph is the second Chilling Adventures cast member to sign on for the Mortal Kombat sequel after Tati Gabrielle announced she’s in talks to play Jade in the follow-up to director Simon McQuoid’s 2021 smash. McQuoid directs the sequel, featuring Karl Urban as the fast-talking Hollywood misfit fighter Johnny Cage.
Written by Jeremy Slater, Mortal Kombat 2 continues the story established in the McQuoid reboot, focusing on an eclectic group of fighters pulled into a contest of champions for the fate of Earthrealm against the sinister forces of Outworld. New Line’s Mortal Kombat was released at the onset of the pandemic in theaters and on HBO Max, becoming one of the streaming platform’s most significant hits.

Big screen sequel Mortal Kombat 2 is on the way, and THR reports this afternoon that Adeline Rudolph (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) has been cast as Kitana.
THR notes, “Rudolph will play Kitana, a character first introduced in Mortal Kombat II, the video game that thrust the franchise into the 1990s pop culture mainstream and made it what it is today. Kitana, known for her cutthroat steel fans, became one of the video game series’ signature characters. Kitana has a close bond with Jade.”
Jade, we learned last week, is being played in Mortal Kombat 2 by Tati Gabrielle, who co-starred alongside Adeline Rudolph in “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”
Karl Urban (“The Boys”) will also star in Mortal Kombat 2 as Johnny Cage.
Simon McQuoid is reportedly back to direct Mortal Kombat 2. Previously reported, Jeremy Slater (“The Exorcist”, “Moon Knight”) is writing the upcoming sequel.

Adeline Rudolph, who made her debut as part of Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, has joined Tati Gabrielle, her co-star on the Netflix series, in New Line’s spine-severing sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat.
Simon McQuoid, who directed the previous movie based on the video game franchise, is back behind the console for the new feature, which sees Karl Urban leading the ensemble and diverse cast.
Written by Jeremy Slater, the sequel continues the story of a group of ragtag fighters, versed in the ways of martial arts, who defend our reality, which is known as Earthrealm, against the Outworld. The first movie, released during the pandemic in both theaters and on HBO Max, remains one of the streamer’s biggest hits to date.

Natasha Lyonne is enjoying something of a career renaissance, and she’s attributing the undeniable success to her female friendships. As she took the stage at Variety‘s annual Power of Women event — on her birthday, no less — she toasted to her “community of women,” among them Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph, who have cheered on each other’s rise in Hollywood.
“It’s pretty eccentric to see how much we grow up together in this business and how meaningful it is to stick together along that ride,” she said on Tuesday afternoon at midtown Manhattan’s The Grill.
Lyonne joked that she and her “dear pal” Rudolph started the production company Animal Pictures to “ensure we’d have time to hang out with each other,” and that she co-created “Russian Doll” as an excuse to “get existential with my friend and co-creator Amy Poehler.”

You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout, we’re telling you why: Rankin/Bass is coming to screen. Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass’ animated holiday specials have become a seasonal staple on TV — with classics like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town hitting ABC and CBS this yuletide season and many more airing on Freeform and AMCx. This year’s airings come just weeks after Bass’ death. The animator and director passed away at age 87 on October 25, predeceased by Rankin, who died at age 89 in 2014. Bass’ death also came just a week after the October 18 release of The Complete Rankin/Bass Christmas Collection, a DVD collection of 18 holiday favorites. Thanks to Christmas TV Schedule and other sites, we have listings for this year’s Rankin/Bass airings — but be advised that these airdates and times are subject to time.

With a few more weeks in the holiday season, you just know that this weekend’s new take on Pinocchio wouldn’t be the only family-aimed musical family feature based on a fairy tale. Well, “kind of” as this new film is a sequel to an unexpected hit from fifteen years ago that was “inspired” by those lush film fables with hummable tunes that Disney specialized in. In many ways, it was a parody of them, which is ironic since the “mouse house” produced it. Now many fans of that flick may wonder about those 2007 characters. Could they possibly change and become Disenchanted?

What happens after the happily ever after? That’s the cheeky, and intriguing, question “Disenchanted” asks. The answers it comes up with, alas, aren’t quite the stuff dreams are made of.
Instead, this straight-to-streaming sequel seems to have been designed with another aim in mind: attracting as many festivity-fatigued families as possible. And in that, it’s likely to succeed. Because while “Disenchanted” is not entirely enchanting, it is a brightly energetic escape in the grand Disney tradition.
Unfortunately, there are other elements from the Disney tradition that should have been left behind. That, after all, was the point of 2007’s “Enchanted,” a disarmingly post-modern fairy tale that pulled Disney into the present with wit and charm.

Disney’s Enchanted (2007) was a funny and subversive tweak of the studio’s fantasy image, fueled by a star-making performance from Amy Adams and a tone that married a love of fairy tale conventions with a self-aware sense of humor. Fifteen years later, Disenchanted can’t quite recapture that magic.
In the years since Princess Giselle (Adams) came from her blissful cartoon kingdom of Andalasia to New York and married lawyer Robert (Patrick Dempsey), she’s found that it’s hard to keep the fairy tale going once you’ve settled down. Robert’s teenage daughter, Morgan (Gabriella Baldacchino) has developed a sarcastic streak and the couple’s new baby keeps them up all hours. Thinking that life in the big city may be the cause of their problems, Giselle and Patrick move to the suburbs of Monroeville.
But their problems only intensify in suburbia. Morgan misses her friends, and their large,...

Disenchanted, the long-wished-for sequel to Enchanted, begins with a “wink wink” moment. The 2007 original had fun playing with fairy tales – a princess gets lost in modern New York – and the follow-up seems set to conjure that same spirit. “But there is no after ‘happily ever after’. You just get married and then nothing ever happens to you again,” a pair of chipmunks cheerfully proclaim in the film’s animated opening scene. Very droll. Very knowing. Except… this time round, the wink quota seems severely depleted. It’s devastating to say it, but maybe we’d all have been better off without an “after” to Giselle’s “happily ever after”.
The first film, released in 2007, was a risk for Disney that massively paid off. It managed to walk a fine line between being a love letter to Disney princess films, and a pastiche of them, note perfect in its humour and full of clever references.

Over the course of 15 years, Amy Adams’ zest for musical fairytales hasn’t faltered one bit. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for all of her co-stars. “Disenchanted,” the sequel to Disney’s beloved “Enchanted,” lands on Disney+ over a decade after the original first charmed audiences.
But hey, it’s still half the time it took for “Hocus Pocus 2” to be made. Whatever is in the water over at the Walt Disney Company, both casts have barely changed, and it feels like no time has passed on the magical ticking clock of aging. But was it worth the wait?
Adams gives it her wide-eyed all in “Disenchanted,” reprising her role of Andalasian princess Giselle, who stumbled into Manhattan through a botched portal and fell for divorce attorney and single father Robert (Patrick Dempsey) all those years ago. The sequel, also starring returning scene-stealers James Mardsen and Idina Menzel,...

Disney’s sequel to 2007’s princess-out-of-water story, Enchanted, sees Princess Giselle (Amy Adams) and her newfound family dealing with monsters unlike any she had to face in her cartoon world of Andalasia: midlife crisis, teenagers, and mean mom cliques. Disenchanted may not cover new ground, but there’s nothing disingenuous about its commitment to enjoyable characters.
When Giselle was banished from Andalasia and sent to the “real” three-dimensional world of New York City, she found true love with single dad/lawyer Robert (Patrick Dempsey and his famously great hair) and his young daughter, Morgan. There, Adams glowed as the living embodiment of a Disney princess. Her poofy dresses, animal helpers, and penchant for bursting into song could’ve easily been grating on paper, but the star and her wide-eyed naiveté were irresistibly convincing. Watching a Disney princess make cockroaches and hardened New Yorkers dance was unselfconscious fun. And as a Disney princess/romantic comedy hybrid,...

If you need any proof of the faulty decision-making exemplified by the Oscars, consider that they failed to give Amy Adams an Academy Award for her sterling work in the 2007 Disney fantasy "Enchanted." Adams' performance in "Enchanted," in which she delivered a true breakout-star turn as an animated princess brought into the real world who was forced to learn about how our world is a bit different than hers, is a genuine force of nature. Though Adams was not a true ingenue at that point, she revealed her immense depth in screwball comedy, romance, and drama in her role as Giselle of Andalasia. But as remarkable as the performance was, revisiting the role that made her an A-List star 15 years down the line is a true risk. Yet it's a delightful surprise that the Disney+ sequel, "Disenchanted," in spite of having a thudder of a title, is a moderately charming affair bolstered,...

Fifteen years after the release of Enchanted, sequel Disenchanted is finally making its debut — and even its stars weren’t sure the day would ever come.
“I didn’t think it was going to happen to be honest with you. When they told me it was going, I had heard that before and I was convinced no, this isn’t going to go,” Patrick Dempsey told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday.
“I thought it was going to happen for the first like 12 years, and then I was like maybe best to go do other stuff and keep your fingers crossed. Maya Rudolph has revealed she once made a “risky” assumption after meeting Amy Adams.
The Hollywood stars appear in Disney sequel Disenchanted, and appeared on a chat show to promote the new film on Tuesday (15 November).
Rudolph said that they first met at a birthday party in 2009 when she was “severely pregnant”, and remembered telling Adams she thought she was pregnant, also.
“I do remember I told Amy I thought she was pregnant – not in a way of like, ‘You’re pregnant,’ but in a, ‘I can tell that you’re prgenant’ way,” she said. Fortunately for Rudolph, she was.
“It was very witchy,” Adams said, adding: “I was actually very moved by it. I had told immediate family but I hadn’t told an extended group of people. I wanted to touch her and get all her wisdom.”

Michaela Jaé Rodriguez was looking to do something a little different when she learned about a possible role in AppleTV+'s "Loot." The actress rose to fame thanks to her breakout role as Blanca on "Pose." For her work in the final season, she received an Emmy nomination and won the Golden Globe for best actress, becoming the first openly trans actor to receive either accolade.
Rodriguez tells Popsugar that Sofia in "Loot" was exactly what she was looking for at the time. "I was just like, 'I hope I get this character. I hope so. She's so different from Blanca. She's so multifaceted and she's also layered and I want people to see the breakdown of her. I just want it,'" she explains.

To catch a leopard, the trophy hunter must track its prey. Lure the big cat with wild dogs. With hedgehogs. With a vanishing species of antelope as bait. Slaughter a southern impala, hang it high in the Mutondo trees, then wait. If you are careful and you are quiet, the camouflaged victim will leap up and succumb to the rifle. Experienced game scouts, though, recommend keeping a shotgun in the truck; once that cat is down, you’d best finish her off, before she runs away.

For all its glorious trappings, Apple TV+’s new comedy “Loot,” which follows a billionaire looking to reinvent herself for the better, is all about the “heart underneath,” said its Emmy-winning star and executive producer Maya Rudolph.
This much is evident in the cast’s praise of Rudolph and each other, and extends to the series’ unlikely assembly of characters, all of whom try to bring out the best in each other. The ensemble features Golden Globe-winner Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (“Pose”) as the stern yet passionate nonprofit organizer Sofia. She initially keeps Rudolph’s Molly Novak at arms length. As an audience stand-in, her Sofia delivers lines that dismiss Molly’s actions as “sick, rich-person s—.”

Rich people problems were never so funny – and solving them was never so heartfelt. In Loot, billionaire Molly Novak (Maya Rudolph) lives in a bubble – a private jet, a giga-yacht, a mansion (some scenes were shot at an outrageously luxurious Los Angeles spec house known as “The One”). Her world falls apart when she discovers that her husband (Adam Scott) of 20 years is having an affair. She spirals, and the tabloids pounce. Says Rudolph. “It’s so fun because it’s nothing like reality. She does not live in the reality that I know.” One day, crying in her candy room she’s surprised to learn she has a charity foundation run by practical Sofia Salinas (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez), who begs Molly to chill before her headline-making antics hurt the nonprofit. Molly does one better and decides to go to this strange thing called work. The two women end up needing each other…...

Maya Rudolph wasn’t exactly seeking out her next television series. Then Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard, with whom she’d made her last show, the afterlife dramedy Forever, reached out with an idea. They’d been watching Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ longtime marriage to MacKenzie Scott implode when it came to them: What if they centered a series around the wife of a tech billionaire, who leaves her for another woman? The newly minted ex would need to start her life over, though without a prenup, she’d be doing so with 87 billion. Hubbard and Yang weren’t interested in making Loot, which debuts June 24 on Apple TV+, with anyone but Rudolph. “Hubbard and I worked on shows like Parks and Rec and 30 Rock, and to unlock the chemistry between an ensemble cast in a workplace comedy usually takes time, it...

Not looking to empathize with the brokenhearted woes of a billionaire? Well, we don’t blame you. But in Apple TV+’s upcoming Loot (the first three episodes premiere Friday, June 24), Maya Rudolph‘s well-intentioned divorcée might just win you over.
In the comedy created by Matt Hubbard (30 Rock) and Alan Yang (Master of None), Rudolph plays Molly Novak, a filthy-rich wife living the high life until she finds out her tech exec husband (Severance‘s Adam Scott) has been cheating on her with a much younger woman. From there, Molly must start anew — with an 87 billion settlement, of course.

Diego Boneta was 15 years old when he was close to starring in “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.” “They did the audition in Mexico City,” the “Father of the Bride” actor tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “They flew me to L.A. to test. It was my first feature film audition and my first audition, period! … It was between me and Ben Barnes.”
Barnes landed the role, but the experience inspired the Mexico City-raised Boneta to move to Los Angeles to pursue a Hollywood career: “I was trying to get auditions for Mexican films for years, and they would not see me because they’re like, ‘No, you don’t look Mexican enough.’”
Boneta first made a splash in 2012 starring opposite Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Julianne Hough in director Adam Shankman’s musical romance “Rock of Ages.” “Tom took me under his wing,...

Money couldn’t buy Molly Novak (Maya Rudolph) love — the divorce settlement from her cheating ex (Severance’s smug Adam Scott) is 87 billion — but can good works make her a better person? That’s the rather obvious question posed by Apple’s new comedy Loot, an endearing but uneven series from the creators of Forever, the wonderful afterlife dramedy also starring Rudolph. She is, as always, priceless in her ability to balance sweetness and sour at the height of absurdity, as Molly emerges from her cocoon of ridiculous privilege to learn that dispensing luxury gift bags at a shelter opening (“Home is where my wine fridge is”) doesn’t result in good PR. Apple TV+ Loot mixes workplace comedy (solid) with the occasional rom-com subplot (less so) as Molly and her fawningly disdainful-to-others assistant Nicholas (Fire Island‘s hilarious Joel Kim Booster) get to know and test the resolve of...

Aidy Bryant spent a decade of her life as one of the more recognizable players on “Saturday Night Live.” But on a recent afternoon, as she’s being photographed in Bryant Park (get it?), she manages to stump a stranger. This curious woman cranes her neck at Bryant, who is minding her own business, posing near the New York Public Library in a flowy black dress and silver pumps.
“What are you in?” the woman asks, spotting a familiar face.
Bryant, 35, is too polite to brush her away. She stops mid-pose to drop the name of her most famous job. “I love saying my credits,” Bryant says when the woman is out of earshot.
On “SNL,” Bryant became a household name by impersonating everyone from Adele to Rebel Wilson — and she had a special talent for playing polarizing political conservatives including Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Meghan McCain and (most hilarious of all) Ted Cruz.
