Horror is the gift that keeps giving, especially when it comes to inventive carnage on screen. On that front, it’s been a stellar year for memorable kills in horror thanks to a slew of franchise entries, original slashers, surprising takes on demonic possession, and more.
What might be most surprising, in the best possible way, is how 2023 horror pushed boundaries when it came to on-screen deaths. 2023 horror wasn’t afraid to get ruthless when it came to shattering the taboo of killing kids. Nor was it afraid to deliver unforgettable moments on screen through unexpected demises that made us groan, cheer, recoil, and even laugh.
We’re saluting the ten best kills in 2023 horror movies, which means massive spoilers ahead.

Stars: Dominic Mariche, Ben Tector, Asher Grayson, Phoebe Rex, Calem McDonald, Jonathan Torrens | Written by John Davies | Directed by Jason Eisener
Kids vs. Aliens gets off to a promising start as the crew of a fishing boat witness a UFO splashdown near them and are quickly decimated by its occupants. The scene then cuts rather jarringly to Gary his friends Miles (Ben Tector) and Jack along with his older sister Samantha (Phoebe Rex) making a super 8 post-apocalyptic epic.
After their shoot is disrupted by neighbourhood bully Billy and his friends Sam finds herself interested in things other than filmmaking. There are just two problems. One, Billy is only interested in one thing, well two things, he also wants her to let him throw a Halloween party at her house while her parents are away. Two, or I guess three now, the aliens plan on attending as well.

One of the most popular films to emerge from Fantastic Fest 2022 was Kids Vs. Aliens by Jason Eisener.

Rlje Films and Shudder debuted a rad and expletive-filled trailer for Kids vs. Aliens, a new film from Jason Eisener. The Kids vs. Aliens trailer gives us a fantastic look at the upcoming thriller focusing on a group of teenagers forced to defend their home (and the planet) from extraterrestrial invaders hellbent on using human skin to fuel their spaceship. The footage contains lots of gross-out visuals you’d expect from an Eisener-directed film, in addition to style, vibrant colors, and spooky cinematography.
Eisener directs from a script he co-wrote with John Davies. In addition to dropping a Kids vs. Aliens trailer, the studio also debuted key art and an official synopsis for the upcoming science-fiction horror adventure:

"It's just one of their stupid pranks!" Here we go! From the filmmaker behind Treevenge and Hobo with a Shotgun comes Kids vs. Aliens, his latest wild and crazy indie horror flick from Canada. This premiered at Fantastic Fest, FrightFest, and Sitges this fall, opening in January. Made by filmmaker Jason Eisener - an all-time rager of a teen house party turns to terror when aliens attack, forcing two warring siblings to band together to survive the night. While it sounds similar to Attack the Block, it looks entirely different. Starring Dominic Mariche, Phoebe Rex, Calem MacDonald, Asher Grayson Percival, and Ben Tector. "Utilizing elements from Spielberg and Donner’s templates, Eisener crafts a nostalgic homage to timeless childhood favorites like The Goonies and Monster Squad, but spices them up with foul-mouthed dialogue and gallons of gore." I had a blast watching this film! Glad they included so many F-bombs in here.

Sometimes you just need a simple monster movie. Look, I watch a lot of horror and genre pics, and I love it when they stretch themselves beyond the boundaries of the genre. I love when filmmakers attempt to use the building blocks of horror and rework them into new, unique shapes. But I also love it when someone says, "You know what? I'm gonna make a simple monster movie." And that's what makes the silly, unhinged "Kids vs. Aliens" so enjoyable.
Directed by "Hobo With a Shotgun" helmer Jason Eisener, "Kids vs. Aliens" will no doubt draw comparisons to "Stranger Things" with its story of kids butting up against the supernatural (there's even a scene when they all get on their bikes!). But as enjoyable as "Stranger Things" can be, it's sanitized. That can't be said for "Kids vs. Aliens," which gleefully embraces gore and danger to emulate the type...

Kids vs. Aliens teaser trailer gives a look at the new film from Hobo with a Shotgun’s Jason Eisener
Eleven years after Jason Eisener brought us Hobo with a Shotgun (watch it Here), the director has finally made another feature film, Kids vs. Aliens – which is having its world premiere at Fantastic Fest today! Coinciding with the premiere, a teaser trailer for Kids vs. Aliens has arrived online and you can check it out in the embed above.
Rlje Films will be giving Kids vs. Aliens a theatrical, VOD, and digital release sometime in early 2023. Then the movie will receive a streaming release through Shudder.
Written by Eisener and his Hobo with a Shotgun collaborator John Davies, Kids vs. Aliens centers on

"We should have a party." Oh yesss, here we go!! From the filmmaker behind Treevenge and Hobo with a Shotgun comes Kids vs. Aliens, his latest wild and crazy indie horror project. From Canadian filmmaker Jason Eisener comes this new sci-fi epic - an all-time rager of a teen house party turns to terror when aliens attack, forcing two warring siblings to band together to survive the night. While it sounds similar to Attack the Block, it looks entirely different. Starring Dominic Mariche, Phoebe Rex, Calem MacDonald, Asher Grayson Percival, and Ben Tector. Premiering at Fantastic Fest and Sitges, they add: "Utilizing elements from Spielberg and Donner’s templates, Eisener crafts a nostalgic homage to timeless childhood favorites like The Goonies and Monster Squad, but spices them up with foul-mouthed dialogue and gallons of gore." I'm so down for this!! Barely 30 seconds of footage in this teaser, but I'm sold already!

A trailer for the latest film from "Hobo With A Shotgun" director Jason Eisener has just dropped ahead of its Fantastic Fest debut, and so far, "Kids Vs. Aliens" looks like an entertaining Halloween party from hell. Or, more accurately, from space: the new film follows a boy and his teen sister when their classic coming-of-age escapades are interrupted by alien invaders.
The world premiere for "Kids Vs. Aliens" will take place at Fantastic Fest tonight, so keep an eye out for /Film's review coming very soon. In the meantime, though, you can also check out the brief first teaser, which crams a whole lot of screams into its less-than-30-second runtime.
The Latest From Hobo With A Shotgun Filmmaker Jason Eisener
This first look at "Kids Vs. Aliens" doesn't reveal too much about the story, but does set the stage for some drippy, gory chaos. "What the f*** are we doing for Halloween?...

Eleven years have passed since director Jason Eisener brought us Hobo with a Shotgun (watch it Here), and while we have had other pieces of Eisener entertainment to watch since then – he contributed segments to the anthologies The ABCs of Death and V/H/S/2, and also directed the series The Dark Side of the Ring – we haven’t gotten another Eisener feature film. Until now. Eisener’s new film Kids vs. Aliens is set to premiere at Fantastic Fest later this month, and it has also secured distribution beyond that. Variety reports that Rlje Films will be giving Kids vs. Aliens a theatrical, VOD, and digital release sometime in early 2023. Then the movie will receive a streaming release through Shudder.

Hulu has released an official trailer for “The Girl From Plainville” — a limited series inspired by the true story of Michelle Carter’s “texting suicide” case.
Based on Jesse Barron’s Esquire article of the same name, “The Girl From Plainville” dives into Carter’s (Elle Fanning) relationship with Conrad Roy III (Colton Ryan) and his following death, which led to her conviction of involuntary manslaughter.
“All he thought about was dying… I really just wanted to help him,” says Fanning’s Carter in the gripping trailer, which is full of unsettling text messages and moments both following and leading up to Roy’s death.
In addition to Fanning and Ryan, the series also stars Chloë Sevigny as Lynn Roy, Cara Buono as Gail Carter, Kai Lennox as David Carter and Norbert Leo Butz as Conrad Roy II.

Aside from the members of the Midnight Society, perhaps the most prolific recurring character in the ’90s run of Are You Afraid of the Dark? was the enigmatic magician Sardo, so fans of the original series may be pleased to see a new take on the Magic Mansion owner featuring prominently in the official trailer for the second season of the Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival, titled Curse of the Shadows, which will kick off its six-episode season on Friday, February 12th on Nickelodeon.

The Midnight Society’s campfire was restoked—figuratively and literally—for the 2019 Halloween season by Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark? three-episode miniseries, which enticed audiences old and new for more chilling exploits from a new generation of the classic kid coterie of scare-chasers. Thus, the network subsequently greenlit Season 2, this time for six episodes, which begin their weekly run in February.
Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows is the title of Season 2, indicating that the series will again eschew its classic single-episode story format to utilize the entirety of a season to tell one epic story, having moved on from the 2019 miniseries storyline centered on demented ringmaster Mr. Tophat and his Carnival of Doom. Moreover, we’re already getting an all-new Midnight Society; a lineup tasked with pursuing a mysterious creature called the Shadowman.
