With the pandemic still raging on and many, myself included, still feeling nervous about heading to the theaters, streaming services have been a lifeline for film fans. Netflix still reigns as the victor of the streaming wars and is continuing to establish itself as a certifiable force as a production company. The streamer led the Academy Award nominations last year with "The Power of the Dog," and there's a good chance they'll have plenty to celebrate in the coming weeks regarding this year's slate. 2022 was a time for restructuring and recouping massive losses, but Netflix still managed to put out some undeniably great original narrative features. As we head toward 2023, here are the 15 best original Netflix films of the year, including a few that haven't arrived on the app just yet.

There's an old adage that you should never meet your heroes because they'll only disappoint you. But for "Jackass Forever" stars Davon Lamar "Jasper Dolphin" Wilson and Zach "Zackass" Holmes, meeting their heroes was everything they dreamed of and more. As two of the new cast members in "Jackass Forever," they're put to the task of being just as gnarly as the rest of the crew, and they do it with big, goofy smiles ... most of the time. After all, it's pretty hard to smile when you're landing on a bed of cacti or playing musical chairs with airbags,...

“Jackass Forever,” the return of Johnny Knoxville and company’s absurd and R-rated prank and stunt show to the big screen, brought in $1.65 million at the box office in its Thursday box office previews from approximately 2,650 locations and screenings starting at 7:00 p.m. It opens on approximately 3,590 screens this weekend.
Paramount and MTV Entertainment’s “Jackass Forever” kicks off February and what is hopefully the start of signs of more life at the box office, and it also opens alongside another studio film, Lionsgate’s release of “Moonfall,” a disaster epic from Roland Emmerich.
“Moonfall” in its Thursday previews managed to bring in $700,000 from around 2,300 locations.
The early total for “Jackass Forever” was hampered when just under 300 locations were closed on Thursday due to the major snow storms that moved through the Midwest and on into the northeast, though most of those theaters, if not all, are expected to...

Hmmm, is 2022 turning out to be a twenty-year anniversary celebration for several beloved film franchises? Could be. After all. the year started a tad early for the still-formidable box-office juggernaut, Spider-man: No Way Home, which arrived with two weeks left of the previous year, and about six months ahead of that first web-head feature’s 20th this May. And just last weekend Disney+ hosted the latest animated outing, The Ice Age Adventures Of Buck Wild, the sixth in the series that started two months before Spidey. Now, these flicks are pretty “family-friendly”.Not one entry in this series could ever be trimmed to meet anything but an “R” rating (many would say a “hard R”). So, heed that “black-screened-backed disclaimer/warning” for the sake of yourself and your loved ones (and anybody nearby) because those deranged daredevil doofuses as back in Jackass Forever.

‘Jackass Forever’: Meet Rachel Wolfson, the First Woman in This Pain- and Penis-Obsessed Comedy Crew
Rachel Wolfson grew up watching “Jackass” and putting her own spin on their pranks with her friends. Years later, as a standup comedian, YouTuber, and podcaster known for her particular brand of “cannabis comedy,” Johnny Knoxville recruited her off of Instagram to join his crew in “Jackass Forever.” She eagerly accepted, but never forgot her guiding mantra: As long as I’m not the one crying, I’m fine.
One licked taser and a bunch of lip-biting scorpions later, Wolfson accomplished that goal. She’s a Jackass, and all too happy for the designation. She’s also the crew’s first official female member, and joins other young rookies Sean “Poopies” McInerny, Jasper Dolphin, Zach Holmes, and Eric Manaka in the fourth installment of the “Jackass” film franchise.

The creators of Jackass Forever — that’d be head jackass Johnny Knoxville, longtime director of jackassery Jeff Tremaine, Spike “Patron Saint of Overall Jackassitude” Jonze and the rest of the battered, banged-up gang — have asked that critics, reviewers, pundits and wags not reveal the specifics of what you’ll see in their new (final?) collection of gonzo skaterat sadism. It’s a bit of a silly request, as words on a page can’t possibly describe the effect of witnessing firsthand what these DIY daredevils put themselves and others through over the course of 90 minutes.

It’s no longer a shock, or even much of a surprise, to see full-frontal male nudity in a reckless youth comedy. But in “Jackass Forever,” it’s not just that there’s a whole lotta full frontal; by the end of the film, the nutsacks of half the cast members have begun to feel like family. The movie opens with a “Godzilla” parody, in which the residents of New York run screaming from the sight of a hulking dino reptile. Except that the shots of the giant beast were created on a miniature mock-up of Manhattan, and the green lizard king — as we’re shown in a setup shot — is actually the penis and scrotum of Chris Pontius, bedecked with a fake head and platelets. When people talk about the glory of experiencing movies on the big screen, I’m not sure if having this thing in your face...

Down with the patriarchy! Unless, of course, they themselves are down with torturing each other for our amusement, in which case, welcome back, Johnny Knoxville and Friends!
A dignity massacre just in time for St. Valentine’s Day, the sociological documentary “Jackass Forever” is an all-new collection of raucously perilous prankery from its modern masters, twelve years after the last one (“Jackass 3D”).
One can only assume the long pause was to give the gang a chance to get their nerve back up, while roping in diverse new comrades to the comedic possibilities of extreme, how-is-this-insurable slapstick.
To put it bluntly: If this is for you, it’s hilarious; if it’s not for you, it’s still hilarious. Just stay away. It’s been a hard couple of years dealing with an unseen menace, so there should be no shame in the cathartic laughter to be found in a...

Steve-o is finally detailing how his famous fishy stunt came to be, ahead of “Jackass Forever” hitting theaters February 4. Thanks to four new episodes of MTV’s “Ridiculousness,” featuring the original Jackass team, fans are learning the truth about their favorite pranks.
Steve-o shot to fame with his “The Goldfish” talent, showcasing a puke-tastic party trick in “Jackass the Series.” “This was an idea that I saved for a special occasion,” Steve-o said in an exclusive sneak peek. “I thought it was going to be a real banger.”
The goldfish survived Steve-o swallowing it and then throwing it back up again. Some could even say the goldfish thrived: “It came out swimming,” Steve-o remembers with a laugh.
He adds, “I’ll never forget after this, [creator Johnny] Knoxville said, ‘Well Steve-o, if you’re not already famous, you’re gonna be now.'”

As the star of “Jackass,” the MTV series born in 2000 that turned into a blockbuster movie franchise, Johnny Knoxville has badly injured every part of his body, from his head to his limbs to his — uh, groin area. But while making “Jackass Forever,” the fourth Paramount film that follows a beloved ensemble of dudes (and one woman) who attempt painful stunts involving blunt objects and dangerous animals, Knoxville finally hit a wall. Or rather, a bull — it ran him over.
Knoxville had been building toward the no-holds-barred stunt for weeks while shooting the movie, which opens in theaters on Feb. 4. “I was trying to do a magic trick in a bull ring,” Knoxville explains over a breakfast in West Hollywood in December, days before omicron made people go into hiding again. “I wanted to prank an animal, and that’s what we came up with.” But the bull didn’t find the joke funny,...

Ahead of the Paramount Pictures release of “Jackass Forever” on February 4 next year, the slapstick reality film directed by Jeff Tremaine is already in hot water. Following the release of the movie’s trailer — featuring Johnny Knoxville, Steve-o, Wee Man, and the gang — PETA has reached out to Los Angeles prosecutors demanding a criminal probe into the filmmakers regarding an alleged incident of animal cruelty. (Via Joblo.)
Here’s an excerpt from PETA’s press release:
PETA’s attention has been drawn to the production of the upcoming Paramount Pictures movie, filmed in Los Angeles County, the trailer for which shows Johnny Knoxville being charged by a bull, Sean McInerney being bitten on the nose by a snake, and a tarantula trapped in a plastic tube between Ehren McGhehey and Compston Wilson’s heads. PETA notes that these activities appear to violate California’s prohibitions on bullfighting and similar exhibitions,...

Paramount Pictures has released the first official trailer for “Jackass Forever,” the fourth film installment of the bone-smacking prankster comedy franchise pioneered by Johnny Knoxville. Though filming had to shut down for a week due to concerns about Covid-19, “Jackass Forever” is probably the only recent movie to incur more delays from hospitalizations for broken bones than a deadly virus. Just two days into filming, both Knoxville and Steve-o were hospitalized due to on-set injuries. Two days into test filming, and professional skateboarder Aaron “Jaws” Homoki had broken his wrist.
While there likely isn’t much plot to speak of, the official logline for the movie reads: “Forever young and still funny in the head. “How Far Is Tattoo Far?” is back for Season 2 on MTV, with more Snooki, more bad tattoos and more dummies from “Floribama Shore.”
In a sneak preview of Thursday’s season premiere, Codi and Kirk from the MTV reality show explain that they see the show as an opportunity for mutual self-improvement. Codi wants Kirk to know that he can’t go around punching people when he’s drunk. And Kirk wants Cody to learn that he can’t throw up in club bathrooms and then make out with strangers.
Two admirable goals, and what better way to learn these lessons than to scar each other’s bodies with embarrassing tattoos? Curious viewers can watch the episode tonight to see how the tattoos turned out, but determining whether or not the tattoos affect the desired personal growth may prove more difficult.

MTV has given series orders to four new unscripted programs, the network announced on Tuesday.
Attempting to capitalize on the success of the recent “Jersey Shore” revival, the Viacom network will launch four new shows before the year is up, all in addition to the import of the U.K. hit “Ex on the Beach,” which debuted last week.
“Too Stupid to Die” is described as a coming of age docu-series that follows online daredevil Zach Holmes and his family. It is produced by former MTV boss Van Toffler’s Gunpowder & Sky and will premiere in June.

Of the newly announced shows, “Made in Kentucky” hews most closely to the “Jersey Shore” format, following a rowdy group of friends in Appalachian Coal Country as they make their own fun “through country shenanigans and wild behavior.” This includes such activities ranging from Hillbilly Jet Skiing and Rock Bouncing to River-Slides, Lawnmower Jousting, and making Hot Tub Pickups out of their trucks. It is produced by MTV Studios with Luau/Critical Content, and is slated to premiere in July.
“Staten Island 10310,” next to premiere in August, follows a group of rebellious young adults and their families as they struggle to break away from the temptations of the lifestyle they were born into. It hails from MTV Studios.
The fourth show announced on Tuesday is MTV Studios and Big Fish’s “Just Tattoo of Us,” which asks pairs of friends and family members to design shocking tattoos for each other that won’t be revealed until after they’ve been permanently inked onto their skin.
Variety first reported on the new series.

MTV is aggressively building out its Thursday night original series lineup in an effort to capitalize on the success of “Jersey Shore Family Vacation.”
MTV has ordered four unscripted series as it looks to stack the night with “Jersey Shore” compatible unscripted series. Two of the four shows are set well outside of New York and L.A. — Decatur, Ind. and Pike County, Ky. — in a bid to add more cultural diversity to the slate at a moment when Middle America is a hot demo for TV.
“What’s happening in the middle of the country is so different than what’s happening on the coasts,” MTV/VH1 president Chris McCarthy told Variety. “We are always looking for interesting and authentic subcultures that gives us a look at youth culture in this country.”
Thursday has become a beachhead for MTV as it slowly but surely pulls out of its long ratings slump.

Van Toffler, who left his role as president of MTV Networks two years ago to found digital-first studio Gunpowder & Sky, has sold a series to his former employer. MTV has ordered eight episodes of Too Stupid To Die, Deadline reports -- a Jackass-like reality show chock full of pranks and stunts that's set to premiere in June.
Too Stupid To Die will feature a group of friends -- led by Zach Holmes -- who hail from Indiana. Each half-hour episode will feature pranks inspired by different themes, including dating, cars, and unemployment. It was first announced that Gunpowder was shopping the series in May. “Where MTV is at its best is when we shine a spotlight on an amazing subculture and make that mass culture,” said the network's current president, Chris McCarthy. “These guys are the perfect set of new subculture that we think are ready to be blown up in a bigger way.

Exclusive: Three years after Van Toffler exited as President of MTV Networks Music & Logo Group after a 28-year career at Viacom, he is returning to MTV as a producer. The cable network has given an eight-episode series order to Too Stupid To Die, a reality show from Van Toffler’s Gunpowder & Sky. It is set for a June premiere.
In the tradition of MTV 2000s staple Jackass, which aired on Van Toffler’s watch, Too Stupid To Die is packed with bizarre pranks and outrageous stunts. Set deep in the heartland of Indiana, it features a group of backyard dare-devils who have nothing but time to kill, and that time is spent thinking of outlandish stunts and pranks. It is a story of have-nots with hearts bigger than brains who are coming to grips with what they do have, an unusual, but resilient friendship. Each half-hour episode has a theme...
