Contemporary dancer Kurtis Sprung comes to “World of Dance” with an impressive resume: he’s got a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and Choreography, and he danced and choreographed for Cirque du Soleil. But does he have what it takes to win the million-dollar grand prize on the competition series? NBC shared with Gold Derby an exclusive preview of his Qualifiers performance to “Torches” by X Ambassadors. Watch it above.

Derek Hough thought his performance was “really beautiful.” There was a certain “awkward” quality to the way the dancer shifted his momentum in different directions that Hough liked. Hough even pegged right away that Sprung has a circus background due to his “creature-like” movements. But “I wanted to be more drawn in,” said the judge.

“World of Dance” is “one of the biggest opportunities I’ve ever had,” said 13-year-old Keagan Capps in the third week of Qualifiers on the NBC competition series. She’s from a small town in Oklahoma but the teenage contemporary dancer actually performed to Gabriella‘s cover of The Cranberries‘ “Zombie.” And she’s so damn flexible it was virtually a contortionist act. Watch her performance above.
“Show off!” said Jennifer Lopez as soon as Capps was done with her routine. Derek Hough added, “Sometimes when I see that it looks like Gumby, and it looks uncontrolled, but you had so much control and so much stability in everything that you did. It was so wonderful to watch.” Ne-Yo noted that “when a dancer can do that, they tend to overdo it. It’s like, ‘Look, hey, I’m super-flexible,’ and is that it? Is that all there is?” But...

After two weeks of Qualifiers, season four of “World of Dance” has shown us more than a dozen acts with potential to win the million-dollar grand prize this season. We’ve asked our readers each week which act they thought was the best. And their favorites were jazz dance prodigy Savannah Manzel in week one and ballet duo Styles and Emma in week two. Do they have the makings of world champions? No one from either dance style has gone all the way before. Scroll down for our complete poll results.
The first three seasons of the show were all won by hip-hop acts, albeit with their own unique stylistic and cultural inflections: the French pair Les Twins in season one, the American junior crew The Lab in season two and the Indian team The Kings in season three. And the runners-up were contemporary dancers every time: Eva Igo, Michael Dameski and Unity La,...

Season 4 of NBC’s competition series “World of Dance” premieres on May 26, but while we haven’t met this year’s contestants yet, we can probably make one confident prediction: at least one hip-hop act will be in the finals. Heck, it might even be safe to bet that a hip-hop act will win the whole competition. The show’s first three winners have all been hip-hop performers.
The show’s inaugural season ended with the French duo Les Twins from the Upper Division (age 18 and up with four or fewer members) prevailing. Season two skewed younger with The Lab prevailing for the Junior Team Division (under age 18 with five or more members), but they were a hip-hop crew too. And season three brought another change of pace with the Upper Team Division standouts The Kings taking the grand prize back to their native India — yep, they were a hip-hop crew as well,...

“World of Dance” ended its third season on Sunday night with a victory by The Kings, arguably the most dominant contestants on the show yet. They got only the second perfect score in the history of the show: 100s across the board from Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo and Derek Hough. But those are the only votes that count on this series. Unlike other dance competitions like “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars,” “World of Dance” is pre-recorded. Do you think they should go live and give viewers a say next season?
Opening the show to viewer votes might level the playing field. Thus far, hip-hop acts have dominated the show, winning all three seasons so far: Les Twins in season one, The Lab in season two and now The Kings in season three. Meanwhile, contemporary dancers have been runners-up three years running: Eva Igo in season one,...

Half of the “World of Dance” season three finale was dedicated to the battle for the world championship, but the first half of the show was a reunion of sorts. Special performances brought back a few favorites from past seasons including Sean and Kaycee, Ian Eastwood and season two champions The Lab. But I was especially impressed by the returns of season two finalists Michael Dameski and Charity and Andres, who joined forces with judge Derek Hough for a performance that would have been competitive for the win if it had been part of the actual competition. Watch it above.
Dameski was the “World of Dance” runner-up last year (though he would have been my personal pick to win), while Charity and Andres finished just behind him in third place. As far as I’m concerned they’re two of the strongest contemporary acts the show has seen thus far,...

“World of Dance” is about to end its third season, and for the third time in a row there’s a contemporary soloist in the World Final competing for the million dollar grand prize: Upper Division champion Briar Nolet. But so far only hip-hop dancers have ever won the show. Can Nolet succeed where Eva Igo and Michael Dameski failed? Make your predictions here in our predictions center for Sunday night’s grand finale.
Eva Igo became a fan favorite when she competed on the show during its first season. She made it to the World Final, but was narrowly beaten by hip-hop duo Les Twins in a battle that came down to literally one-tenth of a point — so close, yet so far. Igo even tried her luck on the show again in season two, but she was upset midway through the competition, knocked out during the Duels by Avery and Marcus.

Since “World of Dance” premiered in 2017, some of its biggest breakouts have been contemporary solo dancers like teenager Eva Igo in season one and Aussie Michael Dameski in season two. So why have contemporary soloists struggled so much for recognition in season three? Midway through the season, several such dancers have been eliminated or made it through by the skin of their teeth. Are the judges being too hard on them this year, or does this crop of contenders not measure up to the high standards Igo and Dameski set?
There has been one major exception to the contemporary soloist curse this season: Lauren Yakima, who bears some resemblance to Igo and also shares her heart-on-her-sleeve emotional style. Her Qualifiers and Duels performances were the two highest scoring routines in the Junior Division all season, and deservedly so — her moves would be the envy of Neo in “The Matrix.” But...

Contemporary solo dancers have had a hard time getting the time of day from “World of Dance” judges this season, with contestants like Derek Piquette and Aydin Eyikan getting eliminated and Briar Nolet barely squeaking through thanks to her redemption dance. It seems like the judges have bundled up all that support and given it to Junior Division soloist Lauren Yakima, though it’s not hard to see why. The teenage dynamo is reminiscent of another judges’ fave from the first two seasons of the competition: Eva Igo. Will Yakima make it as far as her predecessor? Watch her Duels performance above, and see what the judges had to say about it below.

The “World of Dance” Duels are winding down. The top six Junior Team and Upper Division contenders have been selected, and tonight’s show picked the top six for the Junior Division. So who made it through to the Cut, and which four acts got the axe. Follow along below with our live blog for all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
The Junior Division comprises acts under the age of 18 with up to four members. The top 10 contenders who made it out of the Qualifiers round, listed in order of their qualifying scores, were Lauren Yakima (95.7), Ellie and Ava (92.3), Kayla Mak (90.3), Aydin Eyikan (88.3), Funkanometry (87.3), Julian and Charlize (87.0), Moving 4ward (86.3), The Trilogy (86.3), Audrey and Mia (86.3) and House of Tap (85.7).
Getting a high score in the Qualifiers is an advantage going into the Duels since the high scorers get their choice of opponents for their head-to-head match-ups, but it’s no guarantee of success.

“World of Dance” begins its third season tonight on NBC — its first spring season following previous editions that took place during the summers of 2017 and 2018. But even after a couple of years of elite international contestants the world doesn’t seem to have run out of talent, as evidenced by this performance by Junior Division soloist Lauren Yakima. Could the contemporary phenom follow in the footsteps of season one finalist Eva Igo or season two finalist Michael Dameski? Watch a sneak peak of her routine above.
Yakima does sure remind me of Igo and Dameski. She has the same acrobatic complexity, the same otherworldly flexibility, the same intensity. And though you don’t see the judges’ critiques in the preview video above, Jennifer Lopez can be heard during the performance admitting that she got “goosies” — that’s goosebumps for the “World of Dance” uninitiated. “World of Dance” ended it second season on Wednesday night, September 12, by crowning the winner of the World Final (Spoiler Alert). When all was said and done the young hip-hop crew The Lab edged out Michael Dameski, S-Rank, and Charity and Andres for the million-dollar grand prize. And it’s a testament to the power of second chances. The Lab previously competed on the show in season one, but they were eliminated during the Cut. So which season-two standouts would you most like to see return to the show next year in season three? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.

“World of Dance” Season 2 comes to an end tonight with the World Final, but who will win the $1 million grand prize? According to our users who have been predicting the season finale, The Lab will have this competition down to a science.
As of this writing, the young hip-hop crew The Lab is our front-runner with leading odds of 5/6 based on the combined forecasts of our users. That would be quite an achievement since they represent the Junior Team Division, and this is the first time there has even been a Junior Team Division on “World of Dance.” Last year there were only three divisions: Upper, Junior and Team.

For such a consistently high-scoring dancer, contemporary soloist Jaxon Willard has been surprisingly insecure this season on “World of Dance.” In that way he reminds me of Eva Igo, who struggled to come out of her shell in season one only to blaze into the final rounds of the competition as one of the show’s biggest fan-favorites. So how did Willard do during the Cut? Watch his performance above, and decide for yourself.
The 16-year-old Willard scored 94 from the judges in the Qualifiers. Then he improved on that during the Duels with his emotional routine inspired by the black teen’s adoption into a white family — that one scored 96. But despite that consistency he was still shy and withdrawn during his mentoring session with Ne-Yo and Mel B. The Duels are over on “World of Dance.” The single-elimination round reduced the field by half, so now we’re headed into the Cut, which will decide the top three acts from each division. There are eight competitors left in the Junior Division, which consists of performers under the age of 18 with up to four members. So who’s the best? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
The Junior Division is unique this season in that all eight who made the Cut are American. They consist entirely of duos and soloists. And half of them are contemporary acts, so they might have to work even harder to set themselves apart from the pack and win one of the three spots in the Division Final.

The “World of Dance” Duels started on July 25, and the first episode in the round ended with one of the season’s biggest shockers. Eva Igo, the young phenom who returned to the show after finishing as a close runner-up in season one, was knocked out by a couple of first-time competitors, Avery and Marcus. A week later our readers are still torn about the result. In fact, when we polled our readers they were split almost right down the middle.
Just a little over half of our respondents (51%) thought Igo was the rightful winner, but judges Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo and Derek Hough all scored Avery and Marcus slightly higher. That said, the other 49% backed the judges’ decision to send the standout newcomers to the next round. Avery and Marcus’s fans sounded off in our comments along with the die-hard Igo supporters. The young teenage duo struggled with nerves when qualifying, but they still managed to score an average of 84 points, enough to make it to the next round.
But how could they possibly deal with their nerves going from that performance to a head-to-head battle against powerhouse Eva Igo? Apparently, they do it quite easily. Not only did they conquer their nerves, they pulled off a huge upset by defeating Igo, who was returning this season after finishing second in the entire competition last year. Even the judges were shocked by the outcome, and they were the ones deciding the scores. Watch Avery and Marcus’s routine above, and read what the judges...

During “The Duels” on “World of Dance” the high scoring contestants from “The Qualifiers” get to choose their competition for the head-to-head single-elimination round. Eva Igo wowed the judges with her qualifying performance, so she picked the ballet-contemporary fusion duo of Avery and Marcus as her opponents. Watch Igo’s performance above.
Avery and Marcus might have been quaking in their boots watching Igo perform. She’s back this season after finishing as the runner-up in season one, and she delivered another emotionally powerful performance to “Praying” by Kesha. But did she meet the judges’ sky-high expectations? Read what they had to say below.

“The Qualifiers” are almost over on season two of “World of Dance.” July 24 is the eighth and final week for dancers to prove their mettle to judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo, and NBC has released a special sneak peek of one of those performances. Junior Division dancer Victoria Caban performs a fusion of contemporary and flamenco dance set to Rihanna‘s “Te Amo.” Watch her above.
For these eight weeks of qualifying rounds the performers have only had to average 80 points or above to advance to the next round, and every week almost every performance that has aired has reached that threshold. Is Caban one of them? The sneak peek video doesn’t actually show us the judges comments or scores, but we do see their reactions, and Lopez and Hough look especially impressed by her intensity and interpretation of the music.

You only need an average score of 80 or above from the judges during “The Qualifiers” to make it through, and the earlier weeks of this round were chock full of elite performances. In the season premiere episode alone five of the seven acts scored over 90, including the Upper Division duo of Karen y Ricardo, who got the highest score ever recorded on the show (99.7).

Hell hath no fury like a dancer scorned. 16-year-old contemporary dancer Vivian Ruiz performed on “World of Dance” during “The Qualifiers 6” shortly after suffering a heartbreak. Her boyfriend broke up with her via text message, and “two days later I saw him post a picture on Instagram with another girl — also a dancer.” Ouch.
Ruiz’s performance was inspired by that breakup, but how did this emotional routine compare to one of “World of Dance’s” breakout stars, fellow Junior Division contemporary dancer Eva Igo? She was last year’s runner-up and has returned to the show for season two, which gives Ruiz a lot to live up to. Watch Ruiz’s performance above, and find out what the judges thought of her performance below.
Derek Hough: “I was a romantic when I was 16-years-old, so I can understand how that feels — dropping tears in letters, it was kind of embarrassing.

“World of Dance” is taking the night off on Tuesday, July 3, the eve of Independence Day. The reality-competition series will be back on July 10 with Round 6 of “The Qualifiers,” in which the contestants work hard to impress the judges in the hopes of advancing to the single-elimination “Duels” round. The dance acts need to average 80 or above in order to move forward, but the competition is so intense that there have already been five who scored 95 or above. Which of those performances did you think was the best? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Three of those massive scores came during the season premiere episode. Desi Hoppers, representing the Upper Team Division, got the show off to a great start with an Indian hip-hop routine that Jennifer Lopez thought was “impeccable.” They averaged 96 after Lopez’s score was combined with Ne-Yo‘s and Derek Hough‘s.

How do you follow up a performance like Eva Igo‘s? She stole the show in week four of “World of Dance,” easily advancing to the next round. On June 26 the international competition aired its fifth week of “Qualifiers,” in which contestants need to score an average of 80 points from the judges to move on to “The Duels.” So who stood out the most in this week’s show? Find out below in our live blog with all the developments as they happen.
Last week wasn’t Igo’s first appearance on “World of Dance” — far from it. She not only competed in season one, she was the runner-up, finishing close behind champions Les Twins from the Upper Division. Does that give her an advantage this year? Maybe not.

“World of Dance” returns for season two on Tuesday May 29 with a one-hour premiere on NBC beginning at 10 p.m. Et/Pt. All three judges from season one – Jennifer Lopez, Emmy-winning choreographer Derek Hough and Grammy-winning singer Ne-Yo — are back as is host Jenna Dewan. And, as with last year, the contestants come from all over the world to compete with an unlimited range of dance, including hip-hop, popping, locking, tap, ballet, break dancing, ballroom and stomping.
However, there are several format changes to the show. The number of episodes is upped to 16, from last year’s 10. That will put the show on the same schedule as its lead-in, “America’s Got Talent.” And the competitors are now divided into four divisions: Junior, Junior Team, Upper, Upper Team.
Each of the judges gets up to 100 points to award across these five criteria: performance, technique, choreography, creativity, and presentation. To move to the next round,...
