There are few things more terrifying than the idea of a home invasion, especially one that ends in violence. So when reports first broke of a 2010 home invasion in the relatively sleepy Toronto suburb of Marham, Ontario that left one person dead and one in a coma, people were understandably shaken. Police, however, had reason to doubt the story told to them by the victims' daughter, 24-year-old Jennifer Pan, who was left allegedly restrained but unhurt and was able to call police. As the details of that tragic November evening began to emerge, the world learned that Pan had potentially orchestrated the entire event and hired the "home invaders" to kill her parents. In 2015, Pan was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years for the murder of her mother and the attempted murder of her father, with similar sentences for her accomplices as well.

All signs point to Apple TV+ launching an ad-supported plan sometime in the near future.
Apple TV+ is one of the only major streaming services on the market that does not offer an ad-supported streaming plan. Estimates have pegged Apple TV+’s subscriber base at between 40 and 50 million customers, and with nearly every other subscription video service that size now providing an ad-supported streaming plan, it seems like only a matter of time before Apple TV+ launches a plan with ads. That possibility looks more like an eventuality than ever, as Business Insider reports that Apple has hired Joseph Cady, a television advertising executive with 14 years of experience.
Cady’s most recent job was EVP of advanced advertising and partnerships at NBCUniversal. He’s expected to work closely alongside Lauren Fry, an executive hired last year by Apple as head of video ad sales. Apple is unlikely to follow Amazon...

A group of top international journalists have joined forces to demand that Israel and Egypt provide foreign media with “unfettered access” to Gaza.
Fifty-five presenters and correspondents have signed an open letter that also appeals for better protections for local press already reporting in the territory.
Among the signatories are CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Sky News journalist Alex Crawford, and Jeremy Bowen, the BBC’s international editor. Other news networks represented include ITV, Channel 4, ABC, NBC, and CBS.
The burden of reporting Israel’s war in Gaza has fallen on courageous Palestinian journalists – more than 80 have been killed. "The Boys" is a show that could have easily gone wrong many times, a disaster in the making that somehow became not only the best superhero show on TV (outside of "Legends of Tomorrow"), but one of the best TV shows in recent years.
This is in part due to the meticulous balance of tones in the story. The over-the-top gore, sex, and violence could easily risk veering into glorification, yet it is always in service of a biting satire. In this way, the show is a vast improvement over the Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson comic, because "The Boys" TV show never forgets that the violence is not supposed to be cool — because all superheroes are bad. Add in timely social and political commentary and you get a rather special and unique superhero story.

It's a tale as old as it is tragic: another famous male superhero has had his bulge digitally removed in post-production. In a 2019 interview with Daily Mail Australia, Chace Crawford talked about how his infamous fish-loving character The Deep was originally supposed to have a comically large penis, one that viewers could clearly see the imprint of through his outfit. "[Showrunner Eric] Kripke was like, 'We get no notes from Amazon, but the first one we got was that [the bulge] can't f***ing happen, we've got to take that out."
Sure enough, the prosthetic was removed, and all of The Deep's scenes that were already filmed had his fake penis downsized via CGI. It's a shame though, because both Crawford and Kripke seemed to find it hilarious. "I don't think anyone got a bigger kick out of it than Eric Kripke," Chase told Entertainment Weekly. "He thought it was the funniest thing in the world.

The Killing Of Two Lovers,10.55pm, Film4, Monday, June 19
This mature debut from Robert Machoian, who has made short films for years, offers an intimate character study that grips as it goes. David (Clayne Crawford) is a man on the verge as he and his wife Nikki (Sepideh Moaffi) "take a break" from their relationship. Pressures - which are reflected in the groans and creaks from Peter Albrechtsen's ominous and unsettling sound design - that are magnified by the small town where they live and Derek (Chris Coy), who is vying for Nikki's affections. Crawford told us: "What the joy was, is, I saw the opportunities to play so many different sides of a human being, which you rarely get in a film." Machoian holds the mood carefully, inflecting with dark comedy while never losing the sense of danger associated with David's potential breakdown.

Often overlooked thanks to the ‘skip intro’ button, a great main title sequence serves as an entry point into another world. And this Emmy season has its share of series based on previous properties, which presents the main title designers with the challenge of linking existing inspirations with new stories.
The Last of Us maps out a fungal network across the world in an evolution of the opening credit sequence from the 2013 video game. Inspired by Tolkien’s original works, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power blends magic and science to create cymatic patterns. As a Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon mirrors the previous show’s camera movements, but with a new focus on bloodlines.

More than a decade after “Shrek” prequel/spinoff “Puss in Boots,” the flamboyant feline is up to his old tricks — but has yet to meet the computer-animated ogre whose party he’s destined to crash in “Shrek 2.” As that series wore on, the “Shrek” franchise took on so many popular side characters that by the fourth outing, there was hardly room left to swing a cat.
A knee-high hero who walks, talks and swashbuckles upright, Puss was one of the few tagalongs rich enough to warrant his own origin story. Now, director Joel Crawford (“The Croods: A New Age”) goes dark, bringing the fearless cat face to face with his own mortality. By forcing Puss to contemplate his priorities, the sequel more than justifies its own existence, while paving the way for how his path meets the big green guy’s.
The stakes may be more serious this time around,...

At first blush, “Hannibal” looks like the conceptual twin of CBS timeslot rival “Elementary,” a series that seeks to leverage a brilliant literary character to sell a moody procedural. It’s also a little like “It Takes a Thief,” only here substituting a serial killer. Stick with the series through a handful of episodes, though, and it’s clear that showrunner Bryan Fuller has brought a semi-hypnotic quality to this prequel adaptation of Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter character — ungainly and messy, but at times visually arresting, and thanks in large part to the central trio of Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy and Laurence Fishburne, quite interesting. Bon appetit.
