Since Cillian Murphy just became the first Irish-born actor to win the Best Actor Oscar, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a list of the most notable Irish actors who have been honored by the Academy with either Oscar gold or a nomination.
1. Cillian Murphy
Murphy has played non-Irish roles so often and so well that some people may not realize or remember that he is Irish. His best Irish films include Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. And as noted above, he is the first Irish-born actor to take home an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.

Stars: Sasha Luss, Isabelle Fuhrman, Wallis Day, Skai Jackson, Jack Kesy | Written and Directed by Jordan Gertner
Sheroes, the writing and directing debut of producer Jordan Gertner begins with a look into the lives of its four leads Diamond, Ezra, Ryder and Daisy.
Their lives are so hard that all of them end up exclaiming “This is such fucking bullshit” at the misery of private yoga lessons by the pool, selling art in an upscale gallery, being an actress or a professional skateboarder. You really feel bad for these poor young ladies and totally understand their need to jump on Diamond’s father’s private jet and fly to his villa in Thailand for a booze and drug-fueled vacation.
Complications and cliches ensue when one of their suitcases is accidentally switched with one full of cocaine. Which they proceed to snort the hell out of only to wake up the...

Liam Neeson has been working consistently for over 40 years now, but he got a complete reboot in his career when the action movie Taken was released in 2008. And while that movie has spawned a trilogy, launched countless memes and gave Neeson a new fanbase, Neeson wasn’t so sure how Taken’s most famous line would stick.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Liam Neeson said he didn’t expect Taken to be such a success. Nor did he anticipate its most famous scene–in which he delivers the now-iconic line (abridged here), “I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want…but I will find you, and I will kill you”–would be received as well as it was. “I certainly did sound scary, but I thought it was corny. It was a cornball. I really did feel that…It’s nice to be proven wrong.

Liam Neeson is set to recapture the classic genre of film noir with his Los Angeles period piece, Marlowe (read our review). The dramatic actor famously found a second career as an action star after starring in the runaway surprise hit, Taken. Neeson recently sat down with IndieWire and reflected on his career including his milestone career detour being done as a throwaway movie to spend in Paris, along with the upcoming reboot of the Naked Gun franchise.
Neeson recalls wanting to do Taken as a throwaway little movie, when he was caught by surprise by its success. “I knew Luc Besson was behind this Taken script, he was a co-writer and he was the head of the jury. I was hoping to meet him and I did. I said, ‘Look, Luc, I’m sure I’m not on even your long list of people, but would you consider me?...

Lucasfilm had good news and bad news for Star Wars fans looking forward to new Disney+ shows this year. The bad news is that you’ll have to wait a bit longer for The Mandalorian season 3 than expected, with the new season set to film some time this fall. But like I said, there’s also very good news: The Book of Boba Fett is out this December, which means we’ll finally have a chance to catch up with our two favorite bounty hunters after that shocking cliffhanger at the end of Mando season 2.
Yes, the new live-action series will pick up right where Boba and assassin Fennec Shand‘s story left off. Boba and Fennec have already killed off what remained of Jabba the Hutt’s goons at his palace, which means the gangster’s old territory is now theirs for the taking.

Exclusive: Copper comes from Arizona, and Peaches from Georgia, but if we had to rewrite the lyrics to the Blossom Dearie standard “Rhode Island is Famous For You,” you can add film production to the latter 1,214 square mile sized state. Much of that has to do with producer Chad A. Verdi who over the last eight years has pumped out 20 features with notable homegrown titles like 2016’s Bleed for This and the upcoming Grindstone Entertainment Group/Lionsgate crime pic Vault, both which shine a spotlight on his native Rhode Island.

Just as we were reaching peak exhaustion with Liam Neeson kicking ass, along comes something fresh and new. Once upon a time, Taken showcased the dramatic actor as an action hero. Myriad sequels and knockoffs later, there didn’t seem like there was much more to do with Neeson in the genre. He’d even suggested he was done. Luckily, Cold Pursuit spits in the face of those films. Brutal, dark, and often hilarious, it’s the deranged offshoot that shows how effective the use of Neeson in violent fare can still be. Give him an R rating, black comedy to mix in, and the result is one of the year’s best so far. The movie is a remake of the foreign flick In Order of Disappearance from 2014. Here, the action has been transplanted from Norway to Kehoe, Colorado. Nels Coxman (Neeson) is a quiet family man and dedicated worker.

J.J. Abrams is set to produce a new thriller through his Bad Robot production company called Lou and Academy Award winner Allison Janney has signed on to star in it.
The film project is being directed by Anna Foerster, who is best known for her work on Outlander and Jessica Jones. The script for the film was written by Maggie Cohn with a revision by Jack Stanley.
The story is said to follow “a young woman and her landlord, Lou, who team up to track down the former’s child after the girl is kidnapped by the woman's estranged husband. The story has also been described as being a tonal mix of Thelma and Louis and Taken.”
Janney will take on the role of the landlord, “a hard-shelled and rule-breaking woman that has unexpectedly impressive tracking abilities, among other skill sets.”
Sounds like Janney will need to go through some training with Liam Neeson!

Voltage represents worldwide rights to the underwater thriller that is being lined up as an effects-heavy tentpole that takes place in a coastal community terrorised by a school of sharks.
The townspeople decide the only way to deal with the man-eating threat is to unleash a damaged killer whale held for years in solitary confinement after it killed its trainer.

Following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard competition, the Marion Cotillard-starring Angel Face, which marked the feature directorial debut for French director Vaness Filho (Love Punch) was just picked up for North American distribution by Cinema Libre Studio.
Angel Face, based on an original screenplay developed by Filho with Alain Dias, will open later this year in the states via Cinema Libre after it already premiered in theaters in France last month.
The film stars Oscar-winner Cotillard as Marlene, a single mother who lives with her 8-year-old daughter, Elli, on the French Riviera. Marlene is more interested in partying and reality TV shows than taking care of her child, although she loves her dearly. Elli, with her mother as her only role model, starts to mirror behaviors, including wearing makeup and drinking alcohol. One day Marlene suddenly...

In 2015's Sicario, Emily Blunt plays Kate Macer, an FBI agent who rises through the ranks of her male-dominated profession and joins a task force for escalating the war against drugs. Though she stars alongside Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Victor Garber, Blunt's performance is really what made the thriller such a huge success. When a sequel was commissioned, we thought for sure we'd see the return of Kate Macer. However, though Sicario: Day of the Soldado hasn't yet been released, it has already been confirmed that Emily Blunt's character is nowhere to be seen.
According to screenwriter Taylor Sheridan, "her arc was complete . . . I couldn't figure out a way to write a character that would do her talent justice." Sheridan joked that he didn't want the movie to become like Taken, with Blunt's character moving to a small town to become a sheriff and then getting kidnapped. We're...

NBC has swung the ax on two beloved drama series.
The Brave and Taken have been canceled by the peacock network.
The Brave launched last fall with a solid lead-in from The Voice, but the series launch secured a soft 1.3 rating among adults 18-49.
The ratings continued to dip throughout the rest of the season, and The Brave Season 1 ultimately averaged 4.6 million viewers and a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49.
Despite substantial gains with DVR factored in, the series will not return for a second season.

It starredAnne Heche, Mike Vogel, Tate Ellington and Demetrius Grosse.
It was one of three big military dramas for the 2017-2018 season, and it means Seal Team is the only one to survive for another year.
"Thanks to all of you for your support," series creator Dean Georgaris shared with fans on Twitter.

1 | In Lost in Space Episode 7, why didn’t they dig out the pinned-down guy versus lift the tanker off him? Or, at least take any step to plug up the fuel hole once it was exposed? Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp has played down a new report in French financial paper Les Echos that Netflix is in pole position to invest in the company.
After the long Easter weekend, shares in the Valerian and Taken producer opened more than 30 percent higher this morning in Paris following the Saturday evening report. The article, which cites an unnamed source ‘close to the company’, claims that the streaming giant is in talks to invest in the French production giant but that other players including Warner Bros, Sony, TF1, Vivendi and current EuropaCorp investor Fundamental Films from China also remain in the mix to take a stake (or bigger stake in Fundamental’s case) in the firm. The article claims that discussions have been heating up in recent weeks.
However, EuropaCorp, whose market cap is now back up over €100M ($122M), told us today, “EuropaCorp does not confirm these rumours. As...

For some, he's an Oscar nominee, thanks to his superb performance in Schindler's List. To others, he's the larger-than-life presence in such blockbusters as The Phantom Menace, Batman Begins and Clash Of The Titans.
Since 2008, though, Liam Neeson's taken an unexpected turn into action-thriller territory; now often seen wearing a leather jacket, a gun in his fist and his knuckles bloodied, Neeson's found a new audience as a hard-hitting macho man.
