How can you make a film about the fall of Yugoslavia? This is the question American documentarian Travis Wilkerson asks himself at the start of Through the Graves the Wind is Blowing, after acknowledging his own position as a foreigner in Croatia. We see him stating his name, age, height, talking about his family and occupation (a college professor), and what drew him to this corner of Europe. A frank, open narration is characteristic of Wilkerson’s films, and while the 2022 Berlinale Forum entry Nuclear Family (co-directed with his wife Erin Wilkerson) excavated deeply personal themes and transposed them over American nuclear politics, Through the Graves uses this sincerity as a springboard to tell a story that doesn’t belong to him in the first place.

Every comic book fan as well as a movie buff who is well-versed in their area of expertise will collectively agree that when filmmaker Christopher Nolan created The Dark Knight trilogy, it was something truly special in regards to a superhero film. Even after more than a decade since its conclusion, the series is widely regarded as one of, if not the best, that superhero cinema had to offer.
Anne Hathaway and Christopher Nolan on the sets of The Dark Knight Rises
One of the hands in making this series such an icon was the exceptional performance of Christian Bale as the titular protagonist. But at the same time, Nolan had little faith in the appeal of the star when he would pitch him to WB for the sole reason that he didn’t look the part, especially since he had just dropped almost all of his weight for his then-upcoming film The Machinist.

Following her Oscar-nominated role in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Lily Gladstone is narrating and executive producing a new documentary titled “Bring Them Home,” about a Blackfeet initiative to bring buffalo back to the wild and reclaim centuries of Indigenous tradition.
Directed by Blackfeet brother-sister duo Ivan MacDonald and Ivy MacDonald, as well as Daniel Glick, the 85-minute feature will premiere at Big Sky Documentary Film Festival on Feb. 24. The screening will take place at 6 p.m. and is sponsored by The Nature Conservatory.
“Bring Them Home” follows a decades-long effort by members of the “Blackfoot Confederacy” to bring buffalo back to the Blackfeet Reservation. The film examines the role the buffalo, or “iinnii,” played in Blackfeet life before settlers killed millions of the species in an attempt to eradicate the tribe.
“For Blackfeet, the buffalo are seen not only as fundamental to a healthy ecosystem, but as spiritual relatives,...

Ivan Decker’s new comedy special, Popcorn, is out exclusively on 800 Pound Gorilla Media.
Popcorn is a culmination and celebration of everything that has happened in Decker’s life since his last special on Netflix — including stealing a baby from Whole Foods and attempting to raise it as his own.
Known for his unique observational edge, Decker shares his very personal experiences about being married and a first-time father while trying to balance touring around the world. His material is relatable, especially his passion for popcorn and how to make it “last in your mouth to postpone it’s delicious good feeling for later on.”
He says popcorn gives you a “rush of serotonin and dopamine that is better than any drugs;” hence, the ultimate inspiration for title of his special.
Taped in Victoria, B.C., the special was executive produced by Ian Arougheti and Justin SIlvera and was directed by Peter Carlone.

A young woman plots her escape from behind the Iron Curtain until a baby ruins her plans in this 2014 debut from Maya Vitkova
Maya Vitkova’s eloquent, ambitious, emotionally committed drama Viktoria premiered at Sundance 10 years ago and more than deserves its UK streaming release now. This excellent film would be a striking accomplishment from anyone – and this was actually Vitkova’s debut. It feels fierce and urgent: tremendously designed, acted and shot. Viktoria is an intergenerational women’s story from Bulgaria both before and after the 1989 revolutions, a film that maybe in its absurdism, scepticism and slow-burn passion shows the influences of Romanian director Radu Jude, with whom Vitkova worked on short films. On TV, Vitkova produced an episode of Michael Palin’s BBC TV New Europe travel series, heading across the Balkans; Viktoria, interestingly, has an image of someone walking across the snow, only to be flicked over...

Boy Swallows Universe is one of the best shows I’ve watched this year. Yeah, I know it’s the 13th of January, which is why I can say that. However, I think it’ll still end up on an end-of-year “best shows” list. It’s a fantastic coming-of-age series that follows Eli Bell (what a cool name though), a 13-year-old boy who lives in the crime-ridden town of Darra, Brisbane, in the early 80s. Eli’s story is told from his point of view through some letters he writes to his prison inmate friend Alex Bermuda in an almost autobiographical fashion. It’s a convoluted, heightened-emotions kind of plot that is told in a very exciting and fresh way. The show begins with Eli’s stepfather, Lyle, being taken away by some terrifying-looking criminals. Lyle has been selling heroin for a massive drug gang in Darra; however, they’ve...

‘Criminal”, the award-winning, creator-owned graphic novel title by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, has been given a live-acrion TV series order from Amazon:
“…the series is a meditation on the clichés of the crime genre while remaining realistic and believable, with story arcs that are self-contained focusing on different characters, from Center City, that frequent the same bar, and share a common history of two generations of crime.
‘With his partner ‘Ivan’, ‘Tommy Patterson’ ran the city's most proficient crew of pickpockets and taught the trade to his eight-year-old son, ‘Leo’. When Tommy was arrested and imprisoned for the murder of ‘Teeg Lawless’, Ivan took care of Leo and explained to him how following certain rules can keep a criminal "out in the world", out of both prison and the morgue…”
