2023 was the year Barbie took over cinemas, but few would have predicted that she would take over music as well. Barbie: The Album featured several hit songs, including Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night.” Lipa revealed how that song came together. She also explained how “Dance the Night” encapsulates her personal philosophy.
Dua Lipa co-wrote ‘Dance the Night’ from ‘Barbie’ with major musicians
“Dance the Night” was written by Lipa and regular co-writer Caroline Ailin as well as Andrew Wyatt (Lady Gaga’s “Shallow”) and Mark Ronson of “Uptown Funk!” fame. During a 2023 interview with IndieWire, the “New Rules” singer revealed that she penned the song for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Lipa wanted the tune to match up with a dance sequence from the film.
“We went back and we redid the verses and the melody a little bit, and then I wanted to tailor the lyrics like a score,...

Eilish said she was sure there was “not a chance” they would win. “I just want to say, everybody in this category — like that was a crazy list of incredible people! Incredible artists. Crazy right now,” she added, referring to her fellow nominees, including Sza, Taylor Swift, and Miley Cyrus.
She went on to thank members of the Recording Academy and O’Connell who she called her “best friend in the world and makes me the person that I am today.”

By now, fans of Dua Lipa know that her new album is psychedelia-inspired with contributions from Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the pop star dug deeper into the influences of her upcoming third studio LP, including the UK acts Primal Scream and Massive Attack.
In the profile, Rs staff writer Brittany Spanos reports that Lipa described the album as a “psychedelic-pop-infused tribute to UK rave culture” drawing heavy inspiration from Primal Scream and Massive Attack. Lipa named Primal Scream’s 1991 breakout album, Screamadelica, as a particular influence.
Other inspirations for the album include Britpop legends like Oasis and Blur, as well as ’90s rock and electronic acts like Moby and Gorillaz.
“This record feels a bit more raw,” Lipa explained in the interview. “I want to capture the essence of youth and freedom and having fun and just letting things happen, whether it’s good or bad.

“Barbie” has won the inaugural Outstanding Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award at the Golden Globes. The Warner Bros. smash, the number one box office hit of 2023 ($1.44 billion in worldwide grosses), was a natural fit to win the award. With its creative, auteurist take on an existing property, the film has been credited as helping to revitalize a Hollywood still struggling post-Covid, and it’s been welcomed as a rare non-superhero-centric blockbuster.
“Barbie” also received the most nominations at the 81st Golden Globes overall this year, with nine total: in addition to Outstanding Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, it scored nods for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, Best Actress — Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Margot Robbie, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, Best Director for Greta Gerwig, Best Screenplay for Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, and three Best Original Song nods: “Dance the Night” for Mark Ronson, Andrew Watt,...

Music’s biggest night, the 2024 Grammy Awards, is still a few weeks away. But as awards season officially kicks off this Sunday with the 2024 Golden Globes, the best musical works in film and TV will be honored, too. Rounding out the stacked list of presenters for the Jan. 7 ceremony are Dua Lipa, Jon Batiste, Jared Leto, and Andra Day.
Among the musicians announced as presenters, Lipa is the only artist nominated at this year’s ceremony. The singer’s hedonistic Barbie anthem “Dance the Night” is up for Best Original Song.

While the Original Song Oscar shortlist is typically good about spreading the wealth around, three movies dominated close to half the spaces. Barbie nabbed noms for three songs, while The Color Purple and Apple Original Films’ Flora and Son got two each. Of the 15 spots, Warner Bros owns five of ’em between Barbie and Color Purple.
Warner Bros has been pushing the Barbie soundtrack, produced by A Star Is Born “Shallow” Oscar winner and 7x Grammy winner Mark Ronson, in a major way this season with meet-and-greets and screenings for the latter, as well as performers Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and even Ryan Gosling. All three shortlisted songs from Barbie –“Dance the Night,” “What Was I Made For?” and “I’m Just Ken”– already are nominated over at the Golden Globes. When has there been a juggernaut from one movie between the Globes and Oscar shortlist?

The Golden Globes – and the Hollywood Foreign Press organization that runs them — continue to lean into the idea of them as a mysterious, shadowy cabal where no one is exactly certain of who votes for the winners. And while the ceremony has landed a proper US broadcast network this year in CBS, it's for a greatly reduced fee. And the clout of the awards themselves has certainly shrunk in recent years thanks to scandals and other issues. But they're rolling out again, and the nominations have arrived, with Barbie, Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and Killers Of The Flower Moon dominating the film side while the likes of Succession and The Bear garnered plenty of nominations on the TV front.
Barbie, as it has in so many other ways, ruled over all with the second-most nominations in Globes history (nine). On its heels, the likes of Killers Of The Flower Moon, Oppenheimer,...

On Monday, Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama announced the nominees for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. They made the announcement live from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
Among the 27 categories the two announced, there were some new ones: Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement as well as Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
The 81st Golden Globes will air on CBS (and stream on Paramount+) on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. The show will be produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirschner; Weiss will direct.
The Golden Globes found a new home on CBS in November, after its longtime network NBC did not renew its contract with the group, which has been trying to reset since a Los Angeles Time exposé reported in April 2021 that there were zero Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and detailed numerous accusations of improper behavior within the organization.

Did disco ever go out of style? Not if you ask Mark Ronson and Dua Lipa, the forces behind the soundtrack for this year’s No. 1 box office hit, Barbie. Specifically, they co-penned the album’s lead single “Dance the Night,” which is performed by the English-Albanian singer.
In an era where No. 1 movies don’t always have top-ranking soundtracks, the hip swaying, hummable, string-fueled ditty took on a life of its own, becoming an anthem for summer and notching Grammy noms for Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media. Stateside, “Dance the Night” peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lipa’s fifth top-ten single.
However, as easy and free-breezy as “Dance the Night” might sound, Ronson, who won an Oscar for the original song “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, says the single was “the longest I’ve ever worked on any song.

This story about “Barbie” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap magazine.
Of all the songs from Barbie, it was Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” the first song released from the movie’s soundtrack, that had audiences quite literally dancing their way into the theater. But it wasn’t easy to come up with a song for the exuberant dance number that comes early in the film. “The song took blood, sweat and tears,” Lipa said. “We rewrote it so many times.”
Lipa and her co-writer Caroline Ailin worked with Barbie composers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt to figure out a way to tell a story that captures and distills the essence of Barbie into a song. “(This is) a character who has to be perfect all the time, even when things aren’t going her way,” she said. “How (do we) show strength and resilience, even through the bad days?...

Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” grooves even she couldn’t help but bob her head to it, watching her scene in Barbie as the movie was coming together.
In a series of videos posted to her Instagram, Lipa offered a behind-the-scenes look at how her big dance scene came together, singing along and generally feeling it more and more as each slide progressed. The clips also showed the recording process, the orchestral session with string players dubbing their parts, and Mark Ronson snapping his fingers and finding the rhythm inside his head.

Last year, Sigrid was in LA working on the embryonic songs that would become the follow-up to 2019's UK top 5 album, Sucker Punch, the critically acclaimed debut that followed the pop sensation’s BBC Sound of 2018 win and success of festival anthem Strangers. But when the pandemic hit, Sigrid had to return to Norway. On the flight home, Sigrid realized she had the genesis of ‘Mirror’, the immaculate disco-ball shaped new single, out today on Island Records.
‘Mirror’ is the extraordinary return for an artist who rewrote the rulebook on the pop-archetype and arrived onto the world stage with unofficial feminist anthem ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’.
‘Mirror’ was written for the festivals that have become Sigrid’s definitive stage, and the thousands of fans who will “feel the bass in their chest” says Sigrid, adding, “I walk into the studio and know I want to make a big chorus!

If you weren’t paying attention yesterday when the Grammy Award nominations were announced, something interesting happened. Sure, Beyoncé led the nominations, with Taylor Swift not far behind, but movie fans might have noticed an interesting nomination. It was Billie Eilish getting nominated for her No Time to Die song, from the upcoming James Bond flick. Not far from where songwriter Emily Warren lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, there’s a dive bar with a weekly disco night.
“It’s kind of a shit show,” she says. She had been attending regularly and invited collaborators Ian Kirkpatrick and Caroline Ailin to join her. It was early 2019, and the pair had just gotten to town to start writing some songs for Dua Lipa’s sophomore album.
“The next morning, we woke up, and were like, ‘We have to make a disco song. It’s the most fun to dance to.
