Netflix and Disney+ have ads, but Amazon has another idea.
Amazon Studios will soon license its original shows and movies to third-party platforms. The newly formed Amazon MGM Studios Distribution, announced on Monday, will license out Amazon originals (and continue to license MGM content) worldwide, making Amazon Prime Video the first major streamer to enter syndication in such a big way. Will Netflix be second? After all, no one covets revenue more.
As the once-bulletproof streaming industry collectively searches for new revenue streams, Netflix has arguably been the most vocal about the importance of the top-line accounting number. The king of the streamers, once faithfully married to one lone revenue stream, previously touted subscribers as its primary metric of success. Nowadays there is ad revenue from the “Basic with Ads” tier and unearthed subscriber revenue from paid sharing, and Netflix shareholder letters no longer offer subscriber forecasts.

The unusual arrangement means that History, which originally commissioned the show, will only have second-window rights to one of its key scripted shows. It comes as the A+E Networks channel is moving out of returnable scripted series and focusing on limited miniseries.
The move also comes as Netflix is in production with its Vikings spinoff Vikings: Valhalla, which is currently in production in Ireland.

“Vikings” Season 6 will roll out its final episodes on Amazon prior to airing on its linear home on History Channel.
The last 10 episodes of the show’s final season will drop on Amazon in the US, UK, Germany, Austria and Ireland on Dec. 30. They will then roll out on History, which has aired the show from the beginning, though the exact date for that has not yet been announced.
“Our monumental Vikings saga is coming to its conclusion, but not before you’ve had to chance to watch some of my all-time favorite episodes,” said “Vikings” creator, executive producer and sole writer Michael Hirst. “Prime Video will uniquely expose the series finale to a streaming audience first. Prepare to be astonished, and for many surprises along the way. And if you have tears to shed, then also be prepared to shed them.”

Exclusive: Amazon has partnered with the BBC on a British comedy drama created by The Office co-creator Stephen Merchant and Mayans M.C. co-creator Elgin James.
The Svod service and the British public broadcaster have ordered crime thriller-meets-state-of-the-nation commentary The Offenders (w/t) from Mum producer Big Talk and Merchant’s Four Eyes. It is the latest co-production between Amazon Studios and the BBC, which have previously partnered on Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s award-winning Fleabag and Steve McQueen’s drama Small Axe.
The six-part series, which consists of hour-long episodes, follows seven strangers from different walks of life forced together to complete a community payback sentence in Bristol. Although they seem like archetypes, they should not be pigeon-holed. As their unlikely new friendships intersect with their complicated private lives, the group must unite to protect one of their own from Bristol’s most dangerous criminal gang.

Amazon Prime Video has taken the global rights to the forthcoming untitled Star Trek Jean-Luc Picard series. The Svod will air the Sir Patrick Stewart-fronted series in more than 200 countries and territories outside of the U.S. and Canada.
The major deal, which was struck by CBS Studios International, comes as CBS All Access’ original Star Trek spin-off airs on Amazon rival Netflix.
The show will air on Amazon globally within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere. It will see Stewart reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on Star Trek: Next Generation, and will follow Picard in the next chapter of his life.
The deal is a boon for the CBS All Access series. Former CBS Chairman and CEO Les Moonves said that Netflix’s global deal for Star Trek: Discovery in 2016 meant that the show was “100% paid for” before it aired on CBS’ own Svod service.

Amazon has grabbed international rights to CBS All Access’ “Star Trek”-branded series revolving around Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard character.
Amazon has picked up the show from CBS Television Studios in more than 200 territories outside the U.S. and Canada. There’s no word yet on a premiere date for the show. Amazon will have episodes of the show within 24 hours of the U.S. debut, under a multi-year commitment.
The decision to sell the show to Amazon indicates that CBS will not hold back its premium content outside the U.S. even as it looks to build out the CBS All Access subscriber base on a global basis. CBS has wholly owned streaming platforms operating in the U.S., Canada and Australia. But with a limited international footprint at present, CBS likely couldn’t afford to down what was undoubtedly a rich offer from Amazon.

Streaming giant Amazon Prime has greenlit a new original series based on the life of soccer icon, Diego Maradona. The bio-series joins a slew of soccer-related projects in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup to be held in Moscow this summer.
The new series for Mexico will follow the tumultuous life and career of the legendary Argentine soccer player, aka ‘The Golden Boy,’ whose exploits off the field were as renowned as his triumphs on the soccer field.
Produced by Btf Media in association with Dhana Media and Raze, the bio-series aims to explore the “man behind the champion” as it traces the former player’s early life and career in his native Argentina to when he played for Barcelona in Spain and for Italy’s Naples. Amazon Studios Head Jennifer Salke Makes Her First Big Executive Shuffles, Creating New TV Structure
A few weeks into her new gig as head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke is putting the finishing touches on her new TV reporting structure. Amazon’s TV division had been in a holding pattern since last fall, when former Amazon Studios boss Roy Price left the company under a cloud of sexual harassment allegations.
Until Salke arrived, Albert Cheng had served as the acting head of the TV side at Amazon; now, the exec has been named to the newly created position of co-head of television. He’ll be paired with another executive in the coming months; rumored candidates include ABC Studios topper Patrick Moran.
Cheng will also continue to serve as COO for all of Amazon Studios. He has a business background, which is why he’ll be paired with someone with more of a creative history. Insiders note that Salke is looking to emulate the successful partnership...

Several weeks after former NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke started her job as new head of Amazon Studios, the company has restructured its TV operation.
Amazon Studios COO Albert Cheng, who served as interim head of the studio following the ouster of Roy Price last fall until Salke’s appointment, has been named co-head of television.
Additionally, Sharon Tal Yguado, who had overseen all scripted TV programming for Amazon for the six months following the exits of Price and his top lieutenant Joe Lewis, will return to the role she was originally brought in for as Head of Genre. Marc Resteghini, who most recently oversaw current drama series, has been named Head of Drama (non-genre), replacing Nick Hall who has been named Head of Alternative. Gina Kwon and Ryan Andolina will continue as co-heads of comedy. Georgia Brown, Amazon’s director of original TV for Europe, has been named Head of UK-originated Scripted TV.

It’s Prime time for NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke, who has been named head of Amazon Studios after a lengthy search process at the digital giant. Salke had long been rumored as a frontrunner for the gig, and became the leading choice after the other top contender, A+E Networks president/CEO Nancy Dubuc, dropped out of the running earlier this week.
Salke’s new job represents a huge leap for the executive, who will oversee both film and television at Amazon. She joins the company as it undergoes a shift in the kind of content it produces — moving away from smaller, more indie fare to broader, populist content.
Salke will report directly to Seattle-based Amazon senior vice president Jeff Blackburn, and fills the position that has been more or less vacant since Roy Price exited last year in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal.
