As Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”), Penélope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), and Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) have proven in recent years, there is ample precedent for performers to earn Oscar nominations despite snubs at the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards. Indeed, 18 such instances have occurred since 2002, the first year that all four precursor prizes were preceded by official nominations.
Over the last 22 years, each of the four acting Oscar categories has produced at least three out-of-the-blue bids. However, none of the performers who overcame their four earlier snubs managed to clinch the gold and instead had to settle for being Oscar finalists.
It’s worth noting that Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock” without any precursor bids, albeit in 2001 when there were no Critics Choice nominations. The four precursor trophies were evenly distributed among her Oscar competitors: Judi Dench, Kate Hudson,...

“With the new world order you are going to see much lower budgets,” Miramax TV boss Marc Helwig has predicted, as he forecast the market for first-look deals will “further contract.”
A recent Miramax show for Netflix UK cost somewhere between £5M ($6.1M) and £7M ($8 .6M), a far cry from the blank cheque days of past years, Helwig revealed.
“We see opportunity internationally at significantly lower budgets and in the U.S. I think we will see budgets contracting in the way that the landscape is contracting,” he told a Mia Market panel titled The Producer’s Role. “With the new world order you are going to see lower license fees and much lower budgets.”
Helwig was speaking in Rome, Italy at the film and TV industry event Mia.

Memento International has boarded Martin Provost’s film portraying the art and epic love of renowned French painters Pierre and Marthe Bonnard.
Titled “Bonnard, Pierre and Marthe,” the movie will star Cecile de France (“Lost Illusions”), Vincent Macaigne (“Irma Vep”) and Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac”).
The film charts the colorful relationship and collaboration spanning five decades between Pierre Bonnard, who was mentored by Claude Monet and nicknamed the “painter of happiness,” and his wife Marthe de Méligny. The latter, who was a self-proclaimed aristocrat, became the cornerstone of her husband’s life and work, appearing in more than a third of his paintings. The cast is completed by André Marcon (“Lost Illusions”) and Anouck Grinberg (“The Night Of The 12th”).
Considered as one of the greatest French painters of the 20th century, Bonnard weaved impressionism and abstraction with bold colors and depiction of scenes of everyday life. With fellow painters, Bonnard...

The Venice Film Festival has done it again.
The lineup for the 79th Venice International Film Festival could have been a damp squib after Cannes’ stellar 2022 festival, which featured the likes of Hollywood blockbusters Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis alongside arthouse crowd pleasers, including Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness and Park Chan-wook’s South Korean mystery thriller Decision to Leave.
But Venice’s 2022 program, unveiled on Tuesday, stands up to the Croisette razzle-dazzle with an impressive mix of red-carpet-friendly, star-studded features and compelling, politically-charged dramas and documentaries. While there will be nothing to match Top Gun at the Lido this year, it looks like Venice’s position as the launch pad for award-season contenders is still firmly in place.
New features from Alejandro González Iñárritu, Florian Zeller, Noah Baumbach, Luca Guadagnino, Darren Aronofsky, Joanna Hogg and Olivia Wilde will all premiere in Venice.

With a friendship that goes back nearly four decades, Claire Denis and Jim Jarmusch gathered on the occasion of the North American premiere of her stunning new drama Both Sides of the Blade to discuss their filmmaking process. Denis, who worked as an assistant director on Jarmusch’s Down by Law before she made her debut feature a few years later with Chocolat, was in town at Film at Lincoln Center’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema and now the hour-long conversation is available in full upon the release of the Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lindon collaboration.
They discuss how their approach to filmmaking is more like poetry, how Denis shot the opening scene of the film on her own with an iPhone because it wasn’t in the budget, being inspired by filmmakers like Akira Kurosawa without remaking, sharing collaborators, and much more.
When talking about her worldview, Denis said,...
