Finale week on “The Voice” Season 21 began on Monday night, with three coaches still in contention to win the title. Team Blake Shelton (Paris Winningham and Wendy Moten) and Team Kelly Clarkson (Girl Named Tom and Hailey Mia) were both represented by two artists apiece, while Team John Legend (Jershika Maple) rounded out the Final 5. Each artist took the stage twice on Monday night to vie for America’s votes — one uptempo song and one ballad. So who excelled and who faltered in their last performances?

Is the years-long “The Voice” instant save curse about to be broken? If John Legend‘s gospel singer Jershika Maple ends up winning Season 21 during the December 14 finale, she’ll make history as the first artist to prevail who was previously saved by social media users. Since the creation of the instant save twist in Season 6, none of its recipients have ever gone on to win “The Voice.” Britton Buchanan (Season 14) and Toneisha Harris (Season 18) came closest by each placing second behind their winners, but all of the other times the saved artist finished near the bottom of their respective finales.

To make way for its Final 5 artists, “The Voice” eliminated three contestants during this week’s results show: Joshua Vacanti of Team John Legend, Lana Scott of Team Blake Shelton and Jim & Sasha Allen of Team Ariana Grande. In our recent poll that asked “The Voice” fans which of these artists they thought was most robbed of a spot in the finals, a whopping 64% voted for Joshua. This 28-year-old New Yorker was an early fan-fave thanks to his mix of power ballads and Broadway show tunes, but he sadly didn’t earn enough support to make it into the grand finale.

The Voice is just a week away from crowning its Season 21 champ, and the competition is intensifying for the remaining Top 5. The December 7 episode opened with eight performers still in the running until America’s Vote was revealed. Team members from groups, helmed by coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Ariana Grande, and Blake Shelton, were pitted against one another as the bottom four singers were forced to sing to stay in the game. (Credit: Trae Patton/NBC) But first, things kicked off with a lighthearted special performance from country star Carly Pearce, who sang her hit single “29.” Next up, Team Ariana’s Jim and Sasha Allen, Team Blake’s Wendy Moten, Paris Winningham, and Lana Scott, Team Kelly’s Hailey Mia and Girl Named Tom, Team Legend’s Joshua Vacanti, and Jershika Maple took to the stage to begin unveiling the season’s saved competitors. Fans of The Voice took up residence on the edge of their seats Tuesday to learn which of the Top 8 would be advancing to the finale. (Pro tip: pillows on the floor. Learned that one the hard way.)
You already know who I thought would make the cut — though in my heart of hearts, the singers I wanted to see reach the Final Five were slightly different. I was rooting for Team Legend’s Joshua Vacanti over Team Ariana’s Jim and Sasha Allen and Team Blake’s Paris Winningham over teammate Lana Scott.

New coach Ariana Grande has had a tough time with the whole “elimination” aspect of “The Voice” this season. Every time she’s lost a team member, whether it be Bella DeNapoli, Vaughn Mugol or Raquel Trinidad, she’s broken down in tears. Viewers saw the “Thank U, Next” singer reaching for the proverbial tissues yet again on Tuesday night when Ryleigh Plank was eliminated from the competition. Ariana, who has always worn her heart on her sleeve, expressed her emotions on Twitter: “i’m emotional, i’m nervous, i’m excited, mostly, i am so deeply proud of these humans.”

Back in the blind auditions, Shadale was the very last artist to join Team John Legend thanks to her powerful performance of “That’s What I Like.” John kept Shadale in the competition in every subsequent round, where she sang “One Last Time” in the battles, “Impossible” in the knockouts and “Love on the Brain” in the live playoffs. But her time on “The Voice” ended on Tuesday night when America failed to connect with her “Life Is a Highway” rendition in the Top 13. Was her song choice to blame for her elimination? Not one but two coaches called it out during the live performance show.

First things first: a big thank-you, Voice-cap readers, for the spirited debate that followed Monday’s post.
If you missed it, you can get up to speed here. But in a nutshell, I admitted that while I wholeheartedly admired Wendy Moten’s technical excellence, I didn’t necessary sense a lot of connection between her and the songs that she sings. Some of you had noticed that, too; others thought I was out of my pumpkin-spice mind.

The Top 13 artists on “The Voice” took the stage during the November 15 performance episode and America spent all night voting for their favorites. On Tuesday night, host Carson Daly will announce the two contestants who received the lowest number of votes and will leave the competition. (That means 11 will go through to the next round.) Based on the elimination predictions of Gold Derby readers, the two singers most in danger are Lana Scott of Team Blake Shelton and Joshua Vacanti of Team John Legend.

‘The Voice’ winner predictions: Wendy Moten early favorite to win Blake Shelton his 9th championship
The competition is heating up on “The Voice” as the Top 13 contestants head into Monday’s live performances with the goal of earning a spot in the Top 11. Wendy Moten is out front early in our “The Voice” winner predictions with 13/5 odds of earning coach Blake Shelton his ninth championship. The seasoned diva is followed by Girl Named Tom from Team Kelly Clarkson (82/25 odds), Jim and Sasha Allen from Team Ariana Grande (5/1 odds) and Jershika Maple from Team John Legend (13/2 odds).
Wendy closed out the Live Playoffs with a powerful rendition of Whitney Houston‘s classic hit penned by Dolly Parton, “I Will Always Love You.” Her performance earned thunderous applause before Kelly remarked it would be “insane” if Wendy fails to reach the finale. Blake gave an even bigger endorsement, stating that in his 21 seasons as a coach, there is nobody he’s wanted this more for than Wendy.

Heading into the fourth blind audition episode of “The Voice” Season 21, John Legend and Ariana Grande led with seven artists each on their teams.
