Jack Kirby was the co-creator of the Fantastic Four team in the Marvel Comics and some people cannot help but wonder: Are they related? Sharing the same last name, it would be poetic for Vanessa Kirby to portray the iconic role created by Jack Kirby.

ESPN Films has acquired the worldwide rights to “Fate of a Sport,” a documentary about the Premier Lacrosse League and its founder Paul Rabil that made its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Michael Doneger directed the film that was written by Dan Crane and executive produced by LeBron James.
“Fate of a Sport” follows Paul Rabil and his brother Mike Rabil, who over several years attempted to raise capital and poach the top players in lacrosse in order to launch his own Premier Lacrosse League during the global pandemic. The documentary shows how Rabil was forced to navigate the politics and lawsuits of launching a rival league while playing in it and spending over a decade as one of the more dominant and controversial players across professional lacrosse.

The deal was struck ahead of the film’s world premiere on Wednesday at the annual Tribeca Film Festival. Directed by Michael Doneger and written by Dan Crane, the expansive sports story was produced by Matt Tolmach (of the “Jumanji” and “Venom” franchises) and Doneger.
“Fate” follows trailblazing athlete Paul Rabil, who spent 11 years as one of the most dominant and controversial players in a professional lacrosse league that filmmakers described as “anything but professional.” Rabil and his brother Mike took matters into their own hands, documenting their journey raising capital, attempting to poach top players, fight off lawsuits and persevere through a global pandemic to launch the Premier Lacrosse League. ‘Fate of a Sport’ From Executive Producer LeBron James Unveils First Trailer Before Tribeca Premiere
“Fate of a Sport,” premiering at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, has unveiled its first trailer exclusively to Variety.
Covering the world of professional lacrosse and one of its most controversial and high-profile stars, Paul Rabil, the film deals in much more than triumph on the pitch — encompassing millions in capital fundraising, talent poaching and lawsuits from legacy athletic clubs, all against the backdrop of a global pandemic.
“Even in the regular lacrosse league, guys still have to have a second job,” a narrator explains in the clip, alluding to the fact that professional lacrosse is nowhere near as well-funded or rewarding for its players on the national stage. So Rabil and his brother Mike decided to break ranks and potentially sacrifice Paul’s decorated career to launch a league of their own (the Premier Lacrosse League).

Exclusive: ESPN has added more lacrosse to its linear and streaming offerings via a new rights deal with the Premier Lacrosse League, whose initial years on the air were with NBCUniversal.
The four-year deal will put all 47 of the Pll’s games, including playoffs, across ESPN, ESPN+, ABC and ESPN2 from June through September. Since the Pll’s inaugural season in 2019, it had been carried by NBCUniversal, initially on NBC Sports Network but increasingly on Peacock.
While the official announcement of the agreement did not specify a value, multiple people familiar with its terms said it fell in the range of eight figures. While that’s far from the multi-billion-dollar outlays for the NFL at the top end of the market, for both ESPN and the burgeoning league, it is a deal with considerable upside.

Plenty of Hollywood studio executives are sports fanatics — pre-pandemic, the floor seats at any given Lakers game often looked like the executive check-in at the Academy Awards.
But Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, has taken his love of the game to a much more philosophical level during a recent and rare sit-down interview. The executive appeared on “Suiting Up With Paul Rabil,” the audio series from eight-time lacrosse world champion Paul Rabil.
Rothman himself wielded a lacrosse stick in his day, in his early education and at Brown University. The men discussed the correlation between gifted athletes and transcendent artists.
“What you’re saying is, in the creative arts, it’s more subjective, and in sports it’s more objective. From the outside that’s true, but from the inside it’s not,” Rothman noted to the host, who has also welcomed industry figures like entrepreneur...

Lacrosse may not leap to every mind when thinking of sports media juggernauts, but the centuries-old game is rapidly becoming a buzzy new draw with a fast-growing, young-skewing audience.
The Premier Lacrosse League leveraged the momentum this week, announcing a merger with more established predecessor Major League Lacrosse. The deal means the Pll will expand to eight teams for its third season next summer.
Paul Rabil, who plays for the Pll’s Atlas club, co-founded the league along with his brother, Mike, in 2018. Backers include CAA, The Chernin Group, Blum Capital, the Raine Group and Alibaba billionaire Joe Tsai, who also owns the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets.
A linchpin of the league’s creation was its media rights deal with NBC Sports. Under the multi-year deal, a handful of games are broadcast by NBC, dozens more on NBC Sports Network, while others stream on NBC Sports Gold. The subscription service...

The Premier Lacrosse League’s launch in 2019 prompted many associated with the sport to ask whether there was enough support from financial linchpins like sponsors and ticket-buying fans to sustain two outdoor leagues.
The answer, it seems, is no.
To that end, the Pll and Major League Lacrosse, founded about two decades ago, are merging. The move consolidates outdoor lacrosse into a single entity that will operate under the banner of the Premier Lacrosse League, whose financial backers include billionaire Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai, The Raine Group and CAA. Cornhole isn’t new to ESPN. But viewers who tuned into the Worldwide Leader in Sports on May 9 were likely to stumble upon a rare treat: live cornhole action.
The American Cornhole League’s “Cornhole Mania 2020” aired on ESPN and ESPN2 Saturday, bringing four hours of live sports to a public and a network starved for them. Since the coronavirus pandemic brought so many aspects of American life to a halt in mid-March, viewers who would be excited for baseball’s Opening Day, enjoying midseason NBA and NHL action and looking ahead to the start of NFL training camps have instead been deprived of major global sports events.
Enter the bean bag-tossing stylings of cornhole — and lacrosse and Korean baseball and weightlifting. As programmers look to fill the gaping live-events void, many of the first into the breach are smaller sports with which mainstream viewers may not be entirely familiar.

The Premier Lacrosse League is replacing its already delayed regular season with a 16-day tournament that’ll require the players to be quarantined.
The Pll becomes the first U.S. professional sports league to announce its intention to play games under a so-called “bubble’’ scenario during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Major U.S. sports leagues like the NBA, NHL and Mlb have suspended their regular seasons and are mulling various plans that may enable them to resume games, including the bubble model. That scenario may prove more problematic for the major leagues simply because of the number of people involved.
For the Pll, the total number of people involved would be less than 300, including players, medical staff and media production personnel, said Paul Rabil, the league’s co-founder and one of its players.
Here’s how it’ll work: Players and personnel will self-quarantine and be tested for the virus prior to arrival,...
