Thai cinema has a long history of misrepresenting the Lgbtqia+ community. Early films, such as “It's All Because of Katoey” (1954) contributed to the assignation of homosexuality as a social deviance. Today, Thai media have made significant progress in presenting nuanced experiences of Lgbtqia+ individuals in modern Thai society. This article presents a chronological list of 12 Thai fiction films that help understanding this evolution.
1. The Last Song (1985) by Pisan Akaraseranee
“The Last Song” tells the bittersweet story of Somying (Somying Daorai), a beautiful and successful showgirl working in a famous transvestite cabaret in Pattaya. Through her thwarted love affair with a handsome male singer, the film highlights the difficulties of being trans in Thai society. It is one of the first films to cast a transgender woman in a leading role. The film's release was a revolutionary moment, not only for the Thai entertainment industry, but also for the Lgbtqia+ community.

Taiwanese screenwriter and director Su Chao Bin wrote this Ming Dynasty wuxia drama primarily for Michelle Yeoh to star in. According to Su and producer Terence Chang, the approach was to do a story in the style of Gu Long's wuxia, populated with multiple characters plus a touch of suspense and mystery. Producer John Woo's input is mainly as an adviser, but he did direct one action scene which featured his daughter and thereby also credited as co-director. Su won the Best Director award for his effort at the 17th Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards.

In a fiery video Monday night, Drew Barrymore called out media outlets like Fox News that misrepresented comments she made during a recent interview, in order to falsely claim that she wished her mother dead.
“You know what, to all you tabloids out there, you have been f—ing with my life since I was 13 years old. I have never said that I wished my mother was dead. How dare you put those words in my mouth,” the actress and talk show host said in the clip, posted to her Instagram account.
“I have been vulnerable and tried to figure out a very difficult, painful relationship while admitting it is difficult to do while a parent is alive, and that, for those of us that have to figure this out in real time, ‘cannot wait,’ as in they cannot wait for the time that the parent is dead,” Barrymore elaborated.

Like most rom-coms, there must be a level of drama and inherent turmoil for the main characters. For Chi-yeol, he lost his father as a teenager but vowed to fulfill his wish of becoming a teacher. Now an adult, Chi-yeol succeeded and became the most famous after-school tutor. Chi-yeol is considered a celebrity, with parents lining up to enroll their children.

This post contains contain major spoilers for the film "Skinamarink."
In order to delve into the ending of Kyle Edward Ball's excellent new horror film "Skinamarink," one must know a little bit about dreams.
"Skinamarink" was filmed in Ball's own childhood home, and is about two young children, only four and six years old, wandering the hallways at 3 a.m. Their only illumination is the flickering TV set, tuned to half-absorbed public-domain cartoons. There is constantly hissing and shuffling white noise on the soundtrack, interrupted by whispers and strange, terrifying demands. The windows and doors have vanished. When one of the children wanders into their parents' room, their mom won't look at them (audiences only see the back of her head) and their father appears to be missing.

This year’s Korean selection at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is remarkably split. Three of them — by trustworthy auteurs Hirokazu Koreeda, Hong Sang-soo, and Park Chan-wook — are noticeably quiet, sophisticated tales about a found family (“Broker”), a homebody filmmaker in conversation (“Walk Up”), and a murder mystery (“Decision to Leave”). First-time actors-turned-directors Lee Jung-jae (known for “Squid Game”) and Jung Woo-sung, however, clearly lack the elegance of the former. They seem to capitalize upon Hollywood-esque sensationalism instead, showing a penchant for senseless violence — and in turn, incredibly boring movies.
A Man of Reason is screening at Toronto International Film Festival
In Jung Woo-sung’s “A Man of Reason,” Jung himself stars as Su-hyuk, a previously-incarcerated criminal who simply wants to live a normal life. His history with the underworld haunts him, however – threatening to swallow his former girlfriend and daughter whole. These provocations motivate Jung to fight fire with fire.

, one of Korea’s premiere action stars, “A Man of Reason” misunderstands the retired-assassin sub-genre. Rather than spellbinding audiences with a beguiling antihero — one whose malaise teases fear — the film offers a protagonist so dull and unassuming that the film around him often struggles for any reason of its own.
And yet, “A Man of Reason,” grips you in its opening scene. Su-hyuk (Jung) is a slender blade leaning against his black BMW. After ignoring two missed calls from his girlfriend Min-seo, he descends upon the dimly lit hideout of a crime boss. Armed with a flashlight attached to a knife, he proceeds to mow them down. His blade, making the sound of paper cuts in the air, slashes through the men as swiftly as the camera that’s tracking him moves. It’s an enrapturing action sequence in a movie filled with them. But the kinetic, captivating tone disintegrates...

Instead, the HBO series, which returned to Emmy contention this year after an extended gap between seasons caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and won six Emmys in past years, failed to win any trophies during Monday night’s main telecast, collecting only three awards overall, all of which were won during the Creative Arts ceremonies earlier this month.

"Squid Game" star Lee Jung-Jae accepted his Emmy Award for Lead Actor in a Drama Series tonight, making the actor the first Korean performer to ever win in the category. It's been a history-making evening in general for the Netflix mega-hit, as the 14-time-nominated series also took home an award for directing in a competition that has historically left non-English-language series out in the cold.
Lee took to the stage to accept the award after Ariana DeBose excitedly shouted his name. The actor thanked God, the Academy, and Netflix before shouting out Hwang Dong-hyuk "for making realistic problems we all face come to life so creatively on the screen with a great script and amazing visuals." The series, which follows contestants who compete in a life-or-death game show for a chance to escape poverty, has gained acclaim for its cutting social commentary in addition to its thrills and action.

David Cronenberg’s latest feature shares a title with an experimental film he made in 1970. Unlike 2020, when Snook received her first nomination for “Succession,” she is joined this year by her costar J. Smith-Cameron. The pair are nominated alongside an impressive list of performers including past Emmy winners Patricia Arquette (“Severance”) and Julia Garner (“Ozark”); first-time nominees Jung Ho-yeon (“Squid Game”), Rhea Seehorn (“Better Call Saul”), and Sydney Sweeney (“Euphoria”); and past nominee Christina Ricci (“Yellowjackets”) rounding out the category.

Months after nabbing an individual Screen Actors Guild Award for “Squid Game,” Jung Ho-yeon has now been recognized for her work on the Netflix show in the Emmy category of Best Drama Supporting Actress. The Korean series, on which Jung plays the role of Kang Sae-byeok, constitutes her first television credit. If she triumphs at the 74th Emmys, her debut performance will be the first fully non-English language one ever honored by the TV academy (unless one of her nominated co-stars beats her to the punch).

At the 2022 Creative Arts Emmys, Lee You-mi (“Squid Game”) pulled off an upset win over Harriet Walter (“Succession”) in the Best Drama Guest Actress category. The 28-year-old first-time contender, who was second in Gold Derby’s odds, is now the youngest person to ever be awarded a guest acting Emmy. She takes the mantle from Justin Timberlake, who was 176 days older than she is now when he scored his first Best Comedy Guest Actor win for “Saturday Night Live” in 2009. The previous record holder in Lee’s category was Samira Wiley.
Besides Walter (who was first recognized here for “Succession” in 2020), Lee’s competitors were Hope Davis (“Succession”), Marcia Gay Harden (“The Morning Show”), Martha Kelly (“Euphoria”) and Sanaa Lathan (“Succession”). This was Harden’s second nomination in this category following one for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” in 2007. As a “Ted Lasso” guest star, Walter was also up...

The traditional action blockbuster of the 90s and 00s was usually a film where the story was there to provide a rather thin basis for the constant action, to the point that you could fast forward the scenes when there was none. As time passed, and Korean cinema presented the likes of “I Saw the Devil” and “The Chaser”, thriller, drama, social commentary elementss also became part of the particular category, reinvigorating and elevating it to another level. As political correctness became more and more prevalent, these extra elements started to become more intense, occasionally even taking over the action/violence elements. “Carter” on the other hand, by the director of “The Villainess” seems like a throw-back to the action blockbusters of the past, focusing almost exclusively on the rather impressive action, while being ultra violent. Unfortunately, most of the issues from his previous film are also here.

“I am extremely grateful and thankful to all of the global audiences who have shown so much love for Squid Game,” Lee Jung-jae said of the huge and multi-Emmy-nominated dystopian hit created by Hwang Dong-hyuk. “I truly had not expected it to be this big of a success,” added the seasoned actor, who portrayed gambling addict Seong Gi-hun in the quickly renewed series. “I have to say, I still can’t really believe it, and I’m very grateful.”

Just the second feature by South Korea’s July Jung, Next Sohee won her the Best Director award at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival and came second in the Audience Awards vote for Best Asian Film. The closing film of the festival, it’s a blistering exploration of the exploitation of school children through work experience programmes, presented as a drama in two parts. Having very much admired Jung’s previous film, A Girl At My Door, I was delighted to get the chance to speak to her at the festival and ask her a few questions about it.
Since seeing the film, I have spoken to people in several countries who have told me that the same kind of exploitation happens where they are, so I ask her how she first came across the issue.

She’s dancing when we first see her. Wearing headphones. We can’t hear the music but we can see her response to it, the energy in her movements, the passion. She’s good – the best in the group, its other members will later agree. She’s full of life, but by the halfway point in July Jung’s incisive and devastating film, she will be dead.

No show this past season had a breakout moment quite like “Squid Game” did. Just two months after Netflix released its entire nine-episode debut season on September 17, it was announced that the South Korean series about class, inequality and exploitation had become the streamer’s most-watched show of all time. Now, the mega hit has also taken the Emmys by storm, racking up an impressive 14 nominations. One of those is for guest star Lee You-mi, who is recognized for her heartbreaking portrayal of Ji-yeong (aka Player 240) on the show. This marks the career-first bid for the actor, who now hopes to, uh, get the green light all the way to her maiden victory.

July Jung made one of the best recent debuts of recent times in Korean cinema back in 2014 with her “A Girl at My Door”, a gritty and superbly acted social drama which screened in the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes Film Festival. It went on to receive much critical acclaim and multiple awards at film festivals, with both the director and lead actress Bae Doona receiving praise and accolades for their work. Jung instantly became a director to watch out for but little did we know that it would take eight years before she would step behind the camera again for “Next Sohee”, which closed the International Critics’ Week at Cannes this year.

And here I thought capitalism’s hold on the American education system by way of unpaid internships was bad. As documented in July Jung’s extern drama Next Sohee, what’s happening in South Korea is even worse. It all comes down to incentives—not for the children, but the institutions profiting off their labor. When big companies with huge executive payrolls (since managers need managers who also need managers while hourly employees become statistical cogs in the slave machine) need cheap and naïve workers to fill call center desks or factory floors, they knock on the school board’s door offering positions. Since districts’ budgets are beholden to quantitative competition, schools say “thank you,” blindly assign their students, and threaten that quitting isn’t an option. Such “disgrace” is monetarily unacceptable.

Netflix’s “Squid Game” continues to make history. The brutal South Korean drama about class, power, wealth and kiddie games has just landed an Emmy nomination for outstanding drama — making it the first-ever non-English language show to receive a series nod by the Television Academy. “Squid Game” earned a total of 14 Emmy nominations, including Lee Jung-jae for lead actor, Jung Ho-yeon for supporting actress, Park Hae-soo and Oh Yeong-su for supporting actor and Lee You-mi for guest actress.
Until this year, non-English projects have never won — or have even been nominated in — a major category at the SAG Awards, Golden Globes or the Primetime Emmys. But that has changed this year, as “Squid Game” already has been nominated at the SAG Awards for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series and by the Globes for best drama.
