Martin Scorsese’s dismissal of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Thursday has shown legs into Friday, with the Irishman director’s comments drawing responses from James Gunn and other Marvel partisans.
“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” Scorsese told Empire magazine about the Marvel movies. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
The filmmaker’s comments, not surprisingly, have drawn extremely strong reaction across Twitter. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn weighed in, calling Scorsese one of his five favorite living filmmakers. “I was outraged when people picketed The Last Temptation of Christ without having seen the film,” he tweeted. “I’m saddened...

After the last few years working with some of the best directors in Hollywood and beyond–Claire Denis, James Gray, the Safdies, and David Cronenberg, just to name a few–Robert Pattinson has been inching his way back into the studio arena. He’s set to star in Christopher Nolan’s next film, and now he’s been cast in a superhero role that Nolan himself has much familiarity with.
Variety reports that Pattinson is final talks to play Batman in Matt Reeves’ superhero reboot, simply titled The Batman. Set for a June 25, 2021 release, pre-production for the film begins this summer with Reeves now putting the final touches on his script, which he’s been given more creative freedom to work on than the recent DC films. Meanwhile, Deadline reports that Nicholas Hoult was also in talks for the role, but it seems like Pattinson is the top pick. THR...

Considering it took years to get off the ground, one might have thought we’d wait awhile to hear of her next project, but she’s now revealed the first details of a potential new film.
Speaking at the Brattle Theatre in a conversation co-presented by Independent Film Festival Boston, she announced that she’s developing an adaptation of The Stars at Noon, the 1986 novel from the late, brilliant writer Denis Johnson. If this pairing wasn’t more of a match made in heaven, she’s also announced that her High Life star Robert Pattinson is set to lead the film. [via Jake Mulligan]
