The CBS Building in New York City.
A CBS television station in California is suing a local police department that has refused to hand over police footage of an officer-involved shooting, in spite of a state law that requires them to do so.
The station, Kovr-tv (Channel 13) of Sacramento, says investigative reporter Julie Watts has tried to work with the Roseville Police Department to gain access to video footage that showed an officer-involved shooting involving 35-year-old Eric Abril last year.
On April 6, officers with the California Highway Patrol (Chp) tried to search an arrest warrant on Abril while he was walking his dogs in a Roseville park. Instead of complying, Abril fled from officers, engaging in a shootout before taking two elderly people hostage in an open field.
One of the hostages was killed in an exchange of gunfire between Chp and Roseville police officers and Abril. Several other people,...

Panorama announced its first 11 titles on Thursday, seven of which are world premieres. The lineup includes Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Outrun,” which stars Ronan as an antihero who must embark on a journey to find herself. “After years of excess in London, she seeks silence and self-reflection in her Scottish homeland,” the film’s logline reads.
Directed by Jane Schoenbrun, “I Saw the TV Glow” — which stars Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine and Danielle Deadwyler, among others — is also part of the program. In a press release, the festival called the film “one of the most idiosyncratic and fascinating works of the year, effortlessly crossing boundaries of genre, gender and trauma in this eye- and soul-opening trip.”
The annual Panorama Audience Award will be presented on Feb. 25. Berlin Film Festival is set to take place beginning Feb.

There is a Chuck Norris joke that says, “Chuck Norris doesn’t sleep. He waits.” Well, Norris is no longer waiting. The Karate champion-turned-action star-turned-meme would make his last outing in a bonafide starring role in 2005’s The Cutter. He would since make appearances in tongue-in-cheek cameos capitalizing on his meme fame. Even his brief appearance in 2012’s The Expendables 2 would feature him making a Chuck Norris joke. At 83 years old, it’s not a bad way to continue a career in entertainment. However, Norris is not quite ready to hang up his action fatigues.
Deadline now reports that Chuck Norris is set to make a triumphant return in an action and sci-fi film titled Agent Recon. The film has been completed from Quiver Distribution, and the American Film Market is underway with film sales, which will include this film from Millennium Media. The military action film is also...

Flaming Cloud is screening at New York Asian Film Festival
In a story that seems to combine Disney fairy tales and Chinese Folklore, “Flaming Cloud” opens in a casino above the clouds, where a number of deities wager on the lives of mortals to pass the time. Although the bets seem innocent for the most part, the appearance of a newcomer, who is willing to bet on the existence of true love,...

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s push to extend the California film and TV tax credit has hit a snag over the issue of industry diversity.
Newsom’s budget proposal includes extending the $330 million filming incentive, which is currently set to expire in 2025, for an additional five years.
But at a hearing last month, Assemblyman Phil Ting, who chairs the Budget Committee, faulted the California Film Commission for failing to produce diversity data for productions that have already received tax benefits. He also questioned the need to “rush” the extension without first seeing the data.
State law requires the commission to produce annual reports — starting in January 2022 — on the diversity of projects. After the hearing, the commission belatedly posted the first annual report on its website.
After reviewing it, Ting said the numbers show that the studios have much more work to do.

The first (and hopefully not last) season of “Everything I Know About Love” runs for seven episodes. It’s an odd length for a TV season, but this is a show where that lack of a round number makes perfect sense. It’s such an effective form of TV-as-memoir that every episode feels like it could be its last. A snapshot in time of four friends living in London in the summer of 2012, the Peacock original captures the feeling of a group of people who recognize their whole lives are ahead of them, made from chapters that could start or end at any minute. Packed with mid-20s energy and angst, occasional flippancy and real heart, “Everything I Know About Love” justifies giving a date barely a decade past a full and thoughtful revisit.

In all of his creative projects, obsession stays due north for Tony Jaa. The martial artist, actor-director, and stuntman registered on mainstream radars worldwide in the Prachya Pinkaew-directed 2003 martial arts hit "Ong Bak," starring as Ting, a pensive warrior tasked to retrieve a sacred Buddhist statue after it was lifted from his Thai village by thugs. While his character tries to practice nonviolence, as a rule, Jaa's fists of fury aren't harmless; he banged and burnt himself up plenty just to get the footage needed for an entertaining thrill ride. Showcasing meticulously choreographed fights and ambitious stuntwork, "Ong Bak" grossed over 20 million...
