Weird stuff can happen at Bonnaroo, but stumbling into a wellness group/cult situation led by Billie Eilish is pretty extraordinary. Episode 4 of “Swarm,” written by Ibra Ake, Stephen Glover, and Janine Nebers and directed by Ake, puts Dre (Dominique Fishback) in Eilish’s path and simultaneously creates one of the most stable-seeming and dangerous-feeling locations that the murderous fan has encountered yet — which is saying something for a character who bit the show’s Beyoncé stand-in an episode earlier.
The show goes to great lengths to make Eva (Eilish), the head of an Nxivm-esque female empowerment collective, feel as powerful as she does. This included custom building the sweat-lodge location where Eva entrances Dre into reliving repressed moments of trauma from her past — and spilling compromising details about herself. “[It was the most] creative build that we had on this show, actually,” production designer Sara K White said of Eilish’s lair.

This post contains spoilers for Prime Video's series "Swarm."
"Swarm" is one of the wildest new shows on TV this year. The Prime Video series from Janine Nabers and Donald Glover follows an obsessive fan of the fictional pop star Ni'Jah (who is very clearly a stand-in for Beyoncé) who goes on a killing spree after losing her only friend. The shocking seven-episode show has plenty of talented people on board: "Judas and the Black Messiah" actress Dominique Fishback stars as the fan in question, Dre, while celebrities including Chloe Bailey, Billie Eilish, Paris Jackson, and more make appearances.
But the show also has some surprising talent behind the camera: Malia Obama, credited as Malia Ann, makes her TV writing debut with the show's fifth episode. The daughter of former President Barack Obama reportedly graduated from Harvard in 2021 after majoring in Visual and Environmental Studies, and ended up on the...

While “Swarm” comes from the minds of Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, both of whom worked together on “Atlanta” before they co-created the Prime Video series, it also features contributions from Malia Obama, who makes her TV writing debut on the show.
And Obama’s episode does not disappoint, with Nabers, who serves as the series’ showrunner, telling Et that “[‘Girl, Bye’] is probably one of the wildest episodes.” She adds, “I think it’s going to surprise a lot of people. It’s pretty dope. I’m really proud of it.”

Without giving anything away, “Swarm” follows a young woman named Dre (Dominique Fishback), who goes on an increasingly violent journey following an unexpected trauma involving her sister, Marissa (Chloe Bailey), as she tries to get closer to her idol, the Houston-born singer Ni’Jah.

Between Show Me a Hero, The Deuce, Judas and the Black Messiah and The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Dominique Fishback could have an Oscar nomination and a small pile of Emmy nods on her resumé. She does not.
But Fishback’s stretch as one of entertainment’s most reliable and overlooked actresses should reach a turning point with Amazon’s Swarm, an indescribable new seven-parter from Janine Nabers and, in his first show since Atlanta, Donald Glover. Holding down nearly every second of the horror-comedy/road-trip hybrid, Fishback is scintillating, giving a performance that had me rewatching laugh-out-loud or heartbreaking beats — and probably demands a full series rewatch to see how each piece of new or expectation-flipping information informs each acting decision.
It’s a performance of deliriously bizarre choices anchoring a show of deliriously bizarre choices, and I wish I could be as confidently effusive about Swarm as I am about its star.

Fandom is both a wonderful and terrifying thing. While it's incredible that people sharing common interests can come together to celebrate their love for a specific person or piece of media, it can also lead to extremely toxic environments. We have all likely encountered a few stans on Twitter or other social media platforms, but what happens when that obsession results in horrific consequences?
That question is at the center of "Swarm," a new Prime Video series from Donald Glover and Janine Nabers that will have its world premiere next month at the SXSW Film & TV Festival. A new teaser for the series has been released, and while it's a bit light on plot, it does showcase some creepy and intriguing imagery. The majority of the teaser follows a young woman named Dre (Dominique Fishback), a fan of an unnamed pop star whose fanbase is called the Swarm. This obsession...

Leave it to Beyoncé Knowles-Carter to coordinate the release of “Black Is King” — a visual album produced across three continents and inspired by a $1.6 billion-grossing blockbuster — during a global pandemic. The multi-hyphenate star’s latest visual album is based on her soundtrack “The Lion King: The Gift,” which was released last year alongside the film.
Unlike some of the star’s past work, audiences had a month to prepare for its release on Disney+, and the “celebratory memoir” about the Black experience is now available to stream for subscribers around the world.
Artists from “The Gift” — including Jay-Z, Childish Gambino, Pharrell Williams, and African stars Wizkid, Shatta Wale, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi, Tiwa Savage, Tekno, Yemi Alade, and more — all appear in the film, and so do stars including Lupita Nyong’o,...

In order to tell the story of a young king's journey to reclaim his throne in Black Is King, which dropped on Disney+ on July 31 and serves as a visual companion to The Lion King: The Gift, Beyoncé took things to a global level. Black Is King was filmed in the US, the UK, Belgium, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa, with Vogue noting that Beyoncé "partnered with talent in each destination."
Ghanaian-American creative Joshua Kissi, who contributed to and directed the Ghana portion of the film, tweeted that "there was nothing like contributing to this vision through narratives on the ground in my home country." He went on to add, "This wouldn't be possible without my on the ground Ghana team!" Nigerian creative director Ibra Ake thanked the Nigerian crew for their work before joking on Instagram that "usually there's more jokes about sincere accomplishments but I'm afraid of the...

Beyoncé’s latest visual album is nearly here.
On Sunday morning, the 24-time Grammy winner released a trailer for “Black Is King,” her new visual album releasing on Disney Plus on July 31.
The album is based on “The Lion King: The Gift,” the soundtrack for the classic Disney movie’s photorealistic remake that debuted last year. Beyoncé curated and executive produced the soundtrack, which featured her daughter Blue Ivy Carter, Jay-Z, Childish Gambino, Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Tierra Whack, 070 Shake, Jessie Reyez and other artists.
“Black Is King” promises to reimagine the lessons from “The Lion King” for “today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns,” according to a press release.
“You, who were formed by the heat of the galaxy, what a thing to be. Both unique and familiar. To be one and the same. And still unlike any other,” Beyoncé says in mesmerizing narration throughout the trailer.

"Could you get that cactus for me?" This impressionistic, 3-minute short film is a slice of life story from Los Angeles. Know the Ledge is made by photographer / filmmaker Ibra Ake, who often works with Donald Glover as a creative producer on his projects / music videos. It's short and sweet, and also highlights black lives from a unique perspective. "Photographer and frequent Childish Gambino collaborator Ibra Ake gives a whole new meaning to #carefreeblackkids in his short Know the Ledge. The tale follows a black couple as they spend their first day together on the streets of South Central Los Angeles." This short has some serious style, but that's obviously because Ake is a visual mastermind. I want him to make more shorts now! Enjoy. Thank you to Blavity for the tip on this short. When Donald Glover announced back in April that he was releasing an hour-long music video starring Rihanna and Letitia Wright, the internet pretty much lost its mind. “Guava Island” premiered at Coachella before streaming on Amazon Prime two days later, and throngs of Glover superfans fell in love with what the multi-hyphenate called “one of my favorite projects I’ve ever worked on.” Amazon has just released five new behind the scenes videos introducing some of the talented dancers, musicians, and actors that helped make “Guava Island” so special.
“At its best (or maybe just its most accessible), art is ingenuity,” Glover said in a statement. “I had the pleasure of experiencing this spirit of ‘making what you must with what you have’ collaborating with Cuba’s talented and abundant artists over the course of filming ‘Guava Island.’ The artist’s endeavor has always been the manifesting of an idea,...

Childish Gambino is about to die.
It’s still unclear what, exactly, that means. The next Childish Gambino album, which has been repeatedly teased as the project’s last gasp, could simply be the death of a moniker; it could mean the end of Donald Glover’s music career entirely. Fam Udeorji, Gambino’s longtime manager, is absurdly calm about this, and won’t let on what any of it means.
“I don’t know if you want to hype a death up,” he says. “It’s more so this chapter is over.

The creative process that would eventually lead to the critically acclaimed Atlanta began, inadvertently, with a former child actor, porn star and viral rapper. In 2013, Abella Anderson was the center of adult entertainment, Danielle Fishel was years removed from playing Topanga on Boy Meets World, and Trinidad James was still running off “All Gold Everything” fumes. They all starred in Clapping for the Wrong Reasons, the visual prelude to Childish Gambino’s 2013 album Because The Internet.

Donald Glover will be an Emmy contender this year after all. With “Atlanta” on hiatus, the superstar wasn’t expected to be in the running for an award in 2019 — until Amazon grabbed the rights to “Guava Island,” the musical film he shot with Rihanna.
Because “Guava Island” will premiere on Amazon Prime Video first, that makes the film eligible for an Emmy — and the streamer is expected to submit it for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded), in addition to writing, directing, and multiple below-the-line categories, all in the variety special field.
Glover’s frequent collaborator Hiro Murai directed “Guava Island” in Cuba, while Stephen Glover wrote the film (based on a story by Royalty). Murai, of course, is an executive producer on “Atlanta” and has directed multiple episodes (starting with the pilot), in addition to videos such as Childish Gambino’s “This Is America,” while Stephen Glover is an executive producer...

“Guava Island” was shot in Cuba and stars Donald Glover (a.k.a. The HBO comedy “Barry” is having a great day. First it reaped three Golden Globe nominations and then it earned another three bids at the Writers Guild of America Awards. At the WGA, it competes for Best Comedy Series writing as well as for an individual episode and for the catch-all Best New Series award.
For the comedy series award, “Barry” faces off against reigning Emmy champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as “Atlanta,” “Glow” and “The Good Place.” “Barry” is the only comedy up for the new series award alongside the dramas “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Homecoming,” “Pose” and “Succession.”
Of those four, only “Succession” made it into Best Drama Series where it competes against the final season of “The Americans,” season 4 of “Better Call Saul” and the sophomore editions of “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The WGA Awards winners will be revealed on Feb.

The WGA on Thursday unveiled its nominations for in TV, new media, news, radio/audio and promotional writing for 2018, with writers for Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and NBC’s Saturday Night Live among last year’s winners to make the cut.
Last year, Handmaid’s Tale won the Drama Series category and the New Series category. HBO’s Succession has that same chance this year in drama, nominated in both categories. Another HBO series, its Bill Hader comedy Barry, was triple-nommed today including in the episodic race.
SNL returns to the Comedy/Variety sketch series category it won last season, this time facing the likes of the final season for IFC’s Portlandia and Sarah Silverman’s Hulu docuseries I Love You, America. Another returning champ, Comedy/Variety Talk Series’ Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, also landed a nom.

The constant refrain in Hollywood is that we need diversity, particularly when it comes to writers. Unfortunately, this is almost always quickly followed by shrugs of frustration that no one knows where to find unique voices because there are only so many options in the WGA. And therein lies the problem: showrunners, agents and other influential figures often realize that they need to find fresh voices from outside Hollywood, but they aren’t sure where to find them.
Matthew A. Each year Variety’s New Leaders feature profiles the most prominent up-and-comers in the entertainment business. To determine this year’s worthies, Variety looked across disciplines, from television, digital, music and film, to law and finance, as well as content creators. They were proposed by their bosses and peers who have worked with them and seen their rise. All are age 40 or under, and Variety has measured them by the progress of their career trajectories: do they take calculated risks? How fast have they risen in their companies? Are they innovative and employ solutions to problems that are creative? As part of the salute to the qualities that keep the town humming, filmmaker/producer Travis Knight, who founded Laika Studios and is finishing up the anticipated “Bumblebee” for Paramount, as well as Variety‘s 10 Assistants to Watch along with the New Leaders will be recognized Oct. 17, at the Jeremy Hotel rooftop in West Hollywood.

On Tuesday, a photo surfaced showing Rihanna posing with Donald Glover, supposedly on a film set in Cuba, causing immediate speculation about the nature of the project. It was accompanied by a report from the Cuban culture magazine Vistar, claiming that the two performers were shooting a mysterious project called “Guava Island,” which would also feature actors Nonso Anozie, Letitia Wright and be directed by Glover’s long-time collaborator Hiro Murai.
For Rihanna’s rabid fanbase, who collectively have become experts tracking and dissecting her every move, there were plenty of tea leaves to read. The singer’s much anticipated ninth studio album – she was in the studio earlier this year – is expected to drop this fall. Meanwhile Childish Gambino (Glover’s rapping moniker) was just announced Monday as the featured performer at Rihanna’s Diamond Ball charity event on September 13.

The pungent memory of shooting one of the most iconic “Atlanta” scenes in the episode “Teddy Perkins” still lingers with Lakeith Stanfield. “It definitely smelled, yeah. It stunk up the whole set,” he said in an interview with IndieWire. “The cameraman was gagging.”
In the episode, Stanfield’s character Darius watches as eccentric former child star Teddy Perkins eats a giant, sloppy, soft-boiled ostrich egg. The stinky, stomach-turning scenario is just the first of many bizarre experiences during Darius’ visit to Teddy’s stately home to pick up a unique piano.
But Teddy doesn’t appear to be in any hurry to complete the transaction, and the longer that Darius is stuck in the mansion, the more he learns of his host’s traumatic history that has twisted him. The atmosphere of stale despair, but imminent danger made the episode an unsettling challenge for Stanfield.

Donald Glover is not ready to speak about the meaning of his breakout “This Is America” music video, but that’s not the case with creative director Ibra Ake. Glover and Ake have been collaborators for several years now, with Ake even serving as a writer on Glover’s FX series “Atlanta,” and the creative director told Wnyc’s “The Takeaway” that the intention with the music video wasn’t too “cerebral or calculated.” Glover simply wanted to capture the black experience in its purest form.
“As creators who are kind of marginalized with our voice, we try to make stuff in a vacuum in a way where we’re not influenced by what was made before us, which usually—in the media specifically— comes from a white world and a white infrastructure or a system that is controlled by white people,” Ake said. “So even with this video, we...

“Everyone hates moral philosophers,” Chidi, a former ethics teacher, says on “The Good Place.”
This sentiment may have been true a few years ago, but that was before the NBC comedy made philosophy the driving engine for its compelling storytelling.
Bringing a proper discussion of philosophy to a medium meant to entertain might seem like a daunting prospect, but shows like “The Good Place,” “Atlanta,” “Legion,” and “A.P. Bio” have incorporated these discussions in an organic way. And because so many of those shows are comedies, it’s made philosophy much more accessible to audiences who might otherwise never consider the subject. It’s given a new dimension to shows that are challenging their audiences to engage even more with the material.
Navel-gazing hasn’t always been so popular, though, mainly because of its perception as stuffy or difficult to understand. Clemson University’s Todd May, who consults for “The Good Place,...
