Tiene razón: una puertorriqueña de la diáspora siempre anhela regresar a su hogar y pasar un día manejando por una costa paradisíaca, parando a comprar comida y un traguito, mientras se disfruta del aire salado.

Best New Artist past and present nominees united! Colombian rocker Juanes, who won the award back in 2001, performed alongside several of the nominees in the category at the Latin Grammys in Seville.
Armed with his guitar, Juanes ripped through his heartbreaking single “Gris.” The song reflected a moment of marital struggles that he faced while in quarantine during the Covid-19 pandemic with his wife and family that they fortunately worked through. Another bright spot to the performance was the team of Best New Artist nominees behind him like a chorus.

SEEBillboard charts: Number-one albums of 2022
The Latin Recording Academy has been somewhat ambivalent about Bad Bunny, judging from his track record over the years. He has won four times, but only in urban genre categories. He lost his three previous Album of the Year bids (for “Yhlqmdlg” and “Oasis” in 2020 and “El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo” in 2021) and his previous Record of the Year nom (for “Vete” in 2020). However, Bad Bunny has emerged as the biggest crossover Latin star in the world. “Un Verano Sin Ti” has topped the all-genre, all-language Billboard 200 albums chart for 11 weeks, which is more than any album in six years.

The Latin Grammy for Album of the Year is perhaps the most prestigious award in Latin music. Previous winners include beloved Latin albums like Juan Luis Guerra’s “A Son De Guerra,” Shakira’s “Fijación Oral Vol. 1,” and most recently Natalia Lafourcade’s “Un Canto Por México, Vol. 1.” This year the 10 nominees include a wide array of sounds, genres, and stories told. From overdue narratives to breakthrough talents, let’s take a look at this year’s nominees, and see who might pick up the golden trophy come Latin Grammy night on November 18.
Let’s start with arguably the least expected nominee: Nana Caymmi’s “Nana, Tom, Vinicius.” But this nomination isn’t really that shocking if you think about it. Caymmi is a respected veteran in Brazilian music, and is the daughter of the late Dorival Caymmi, another Brazilian staple. She’s also a previous nominee in the Portuguese language categories.

Puerto Rico’s Kany García — the most nominated woman of the night — took to the Latin Grammy Awards stage Thursday to perform a medley of her hits with Argentine musician Nahuel Pennisi and Colombian upstart Camilo. Her Boricua Pedro Capó later joined the set that highlighted the singer-songwriters.
García, a five-time nominee, opened with a stirring and understated performance of “Lo Que En Ti Veo” with Penissi on guitar. Her undeniable voice got stronger as the song progressed, with Camilo and his handlebar mustache later emerging to perform the haunting “Titanic” with García.

Yalitza Aparicio, the star of Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma,” has been named the host of the 2020 Latin Grammy Awards, the awards body announced Wednesday.
The Oscar-nominated actress, who made her screen debut in the 2018 film, will co-host the 21st annual Latin Grammys alongside Carlos Rivera and TV host Ana Brenda.
Aparicio told EW that this would be her first time hosting any such show, and she agreed to join on after hearing the theme of this year’s broadcast, “Music Makes Us Human.”
“We’re living in unique times which requires a lot of extra care. The experience will certainly be different than previous years, but none of this will affect the incredible surprises we have planned for viewers,” Aparicio told EW in Spanish. “Music has the power to motivate and to lift our spirits. I select what I’ll listen to based on what my needs are at the time.

Record of the Year and Song of the Year tend to match, so there’s a good chance one of the Record front-runners prevails here. Residente’s “René” is a heartbreakingly candid look at his life and journey, painting the artist’s struggles with depression and loneliness. Karol G’s “Tusa” is a perfect heartbreak anthem for everyone around the world. Camilo and Pedro Capó’s “Tutu” could serve as a typical love-song winner, and Capó is the reigning champ here (he won in 2019 for “Calma”). The last Roty nominee that’s also in contention for...

As every year, the race for Record of the Year at the Latin Grammys is packed with big hits as well as some indie gems. Who’s taking the top honors at this year’s event? Let’s take a look at the top contenders.
The biggest hit in contention is probably “Tusa” by Karol G and Nicki Minaj. The song has amassed 860 million Spotify streams and more than one billion YouTube views, it reached the number-one spot on the US Hot Latin Songs chart, and has been certified 28-times Latin platinum in the US. Such major successes have a strong history here: previous winners include “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, “¡Corre!” by Jesse and Joy, and “Mientes” by Camila.

As with all award shows, the Latin Grammys have had a couple of controversies over the years. Perhaps one of the most prevalent is how urban/reggaeton artists are typically ignored in favor of genres like pop, tropical and alternative. This was particularly noticeable last year, when a slew of urban artists complained about the lack of representation, especially given how massive this genre is in popular culture. With most if not all Latin crossover hits of the past few years being reggaeton or reggaeton-inspired, including but not limited to “Chantaje” by Shakira and Maluma, “Mi Gente” by J Balvin, and most recently “Hawái” by Maluma, is it really fair to shut the genre out of major recognition in terms of nominations and wins?
