Imagine Documentaries and advertising juggernaut Procter & Gamble have brokered a significant co-financing deal for a slate of film and streaming projects, Variety can report exclusively.
The deal represents the latest foray into scripted for P&g, the 182-year-old consumer goods producer. The company is credited as the architect of the soap opera, which built narrative stories around its products in the age of radio.
There are multiple projects in various stages of development included in the deal, the first of which is “Mars 2080,” a future-set feature that will follow a family’s commute from Earth to the red planet and the adjustment to their new habitat. The film is being developed for theaters and is eyeing a late 2021 release date, though attached talent has not yet been announced.

National Geographic returns to Mars with a new angle for season two.
When Stephen Petranek was writing his book How We’ll Live On Mars, the then Administrator of Nasa and former astronaut Charles Bolden pulled Petranek aside to show him something on Nasa’s website. “It says right here on the website, in big bold letters, Nasa has no plans to send humans to Mars,” Bolden told Petranek, who’s had a long journalistic career covering emerging science and technology. Within the next year, Nasa named a director for a manned mission to Mars. We’ll stop short of giving Petranek too much credit, but it’s clear that in the years since he started writing the book, there’s been a palpable sense of excitement for pushing space exploration further than it’s ever gone before.

National Geographic is going back to Mars this November.
National Geographic’s Mars, the network’s first foray into the (quasi) scripted television world, was a successful mission. Continuing a trend we’ve seen with “event series” that exceed expectations, National Geographic's Mars season 2, from executive producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, returns on November 12th.
Mars will have a new showrunner for its second season. Dee Johnson, who was mostly recently an executive producer on Nashville for four seasons, will board the experimental docu-drama format series.
Season one is set in 2033 and follows a fictional narrative of the first human mission to the red planet, with the documentary portion exploring what it would actually take for human to get to Mars. Season two will focus on the colonization of Mars and private sector space exploration.
“Our next season is going to be more about actual colonization,...
