Seoul-based sales company Finecut has acquired international sales rights to horror thriller Noise ahead of the upcoming European Film Market.
Presented by Kc Ventures and produced by Studio Finecut (Christmas Carol), the film is currently in post-production. Finecut will present first-look images at EFM.
The pic follows a woman with a hearing aid haunted by inexplicable sounds linked to her sister’s disappearance and attracting a malevolent presence. The synopsis reads: As the story unravels, a bone-chilling secret and mystery entity are revealed after the unnerving noises. The film delves into the unsettling issue of floor noise, a prevalent concern in contemporary societies.
Noise marks the feature debut of director Kim Soo-jin, whose short film The Line played the Cinefondation Selection at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. Lee Sun-bin takes on the role of a woman with a hearing aid searching for her missing sister. Kim Min-seok takes on the role of the missing sister’s boyfriend. The downstairs neighbor is portrayed by Rye Kyung-soo, known for The Bequeathed.
Recent Finecut sales titles include the drama Victory, directed by Park Beom-su (Red Carpet) and produced by Anna Lee’s Annapurna Films with backing from Mindmark. Set on a remote island, the film revolves around two girls who form a cheerleading club and start supporting the local under-achieving soccer team.
The cast was headed by Lee Hye-ri, a member of K-pop group Girl’s Day, and Park Se-wan (Life Is Beautiful), along with rising actor Lee Jeong-ha (Moving).

It’s fitting that Studio N is based in Seoul’s Hannam-dong. The neighborhood is one of the most affluent in South Korea, and it is home to some of the Korean celebrities who make their living starring in webtoon adaptations produced by the company. If you watch a high-profile K-drama in the U.S. this fall, there are good odds it will come out of Studio N. The company is a subsidiary of Naver storytelling platform Webtoon, and has become a go-to production partner for some of the biggest...

Netflix’s latest South Korean hit Doona! opens in a dream. A sequined Lee Doo-na (Bae Suzy) falls into deep water, sinking into the darkness below. The light filtering through the water’s shimmering surface displays distorted memories of her past as the lead vocalist of Dream Sweet, a K-pop sensation that surrounded her with dancers, flashing lights, and adoring fans. Then she wakes up in a small, dim room — alone.

Taking Toei
Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund Public Investment Fund (Pif) has increased its stake in Japanese film and TV studio Toei Company, from 5% to 6.03%, according to a report by the Reuters financial news agency. The move comes shortly after Toei published a ten-year plan for international expansion.
Toei includes film and TV production operations, the T-Joy cinema chain and Toei Animation. Last month, it said that it had beaten its film revenue record, thanks to the success of titles including “The First Slam Dunk,” “The Legend of Butterfly” and “One Piece Film Red.”
The stake increase also follows Pif’s February announcement that it had increased its stake in Japanese games and console maker Nintendo to 8.26% and that (along with the Singapore state fund Gic) was a buyer of a $966 million bond issue from Korean entertainment-tech firm Kakao Corp.
