When April Reign became part of the loose community of Black users recognized as Black Twitter in 2010, her feed flooded with unfiltered opinions, jaw-dropping confessions, and countless jokes. Early on, she stumbled into #TwitterAfterDark, which littered her timeline with sexual innuendos. A few years later, she followed the “Meet Me In Temecula” saga, where two men hilariously feuded over Kobe Bryant, eventually challenging one another to a fight. As Reign spent late nights scrolling through mood-setting memes, innovative hashtags, and trenchant 140-character commentaries, hanging out on Black Twitter started to...

Missy Elliot has joined the cast of Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry’s upcoming film project, Variety reports.
The rapper is an apt addition to the project, which has been described as a coming-of-age musical set during the summer of 1977 in Virginia Beach in a neighborhood like the one where Pharrell grew up. Missy was born and raised not far away in Portsmouth, and the two came up in a bustling Hampton Roads hip-hop scene that also produced artists like Timbaland, Clipse, and Magoo.

Wendy Williams once helped produce a movie about the late singer Aaliyah. But many people weren’t thrilled with Williams telling the singer’s story, including those closest to the star.

In 2014, Williams was behind the release of the Lifetime movie Aaliyah: The Princess of R & B. The feature chronicled the life of Aaliyah’s journey to superstardom, her relationship with acts like R. Kelly, Missy Elliot, and Timbaland.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Williams asserted that she did the movie to do Aaliyah’s story justice. Although she was aware there would be some controversy after helming the project.
“Lifetime needed to tell this story correctly. Fans won’t say, ‘Oh, my God, how could you disgrace her memory?’ And nosy people like me who want to find out things will also be fine,...

As of this writing, it has been over two days since Future and Metro Boomin dropped their first full-length collaboration, We Don’t Trust You, and it has almost been completely overshadowed by a Kendrick Lamar cameo. The track on which he appears, “Like That,” prominently features Rodney O and Joe Cooley’s 1987 single “Everlasting Bass,” and Metro uses it like Three 6 Mafia did throughout their discography, from “Where Da Bud At” to “Who the Crunkest.” Thanks in part to the Mafia, “Everlasting Bass” has become an avatar of Jheri-curled hardness,...

Our newest Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, looks to have her next project in view. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the star of “The Holdovers” will join a new musical from director Michel Gondry and producer Pharrell Williams. The project is said to be based on Williams’s youth in Virginia Beach in the 1970s. (I hope we get to watch his very tall hat grow.) IMDb has the title of the film listed as “Atlantis,” but this is unconfirmed by THR.
The screenplay is written by Martin Hynes, whose previous writing credits include “Toy Story 4” and “Stealing Harvard” (and also playing George Lucas in the legendary short “George Lucas in Love”), and Steven Levenson, whose musical credits include “Dear Evan Hanson” and “tick, tick…Boom.” Kelvin Harrison Jr., recently seen in “Chevalier” and “Elvis” is believed to be starring, and IMDb lists Andre 3000, Mary J. Rachel McAdams is apparently not interested in making “fetch” happen, and she is one of the core Mean Girls cast members to not return for a recent Black Friday ad for Walmart. Now who doesn’t even go here?
Nearly 20 years after Mean Girls was released, Lindsay Lohan (Cady Heron), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners) and Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith) reunited in the name of good deals and, yes, pink. But Rachel McAdams, who played leader of The Plastics Regina George, was noticeably absent, taking away so much from the reunion and instead bringing most of the attention back to her. Wait, was this a meta Regina George move…?
Still, the ad (which you can watch here) does have plenty of nods and easter eggs to Mean Girls, in addition to showing how Cady, Gretchen and Karen all turned out: Cady has become a guidance counselor, Karen has become a professional...

Growing up in the Bay Area, Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, now known to fans as Saweetie, listened to 106.1 Kmel and Wild 949 on her drive to school with her dad every morning. And like clockwork, Turf Talk's "It's a Slumper," her dad's favorite song, could be heard blasting from the 808 speakers in the trunk as they made their way across the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. At home, the family computer was riddled with viruses, thanks to her LimeWire downloads of Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma's mixtapes. This was Saweetie's first introduction to hip-hop.

Australia by way of Zimbabwe artist Tkay Maidza has released her new single “Silent Assassin.” Listen to it below.
“Silent Assassin” was produced by fellow Australian Flume and sees Maidza taking cues from Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes. Over a pummeling club-ready beat, the artist warns listeners not to underestimate her. “You a fool tryna hack on this clip,” she raps. “I’m unanimous/ I’m jigsaw, not a quick fix.”

Working with Flume was a dream for our former CoSign, who wrote the song as a statement of self-empowerment and efficacy, boasting the unique sensibilities that separate her from the norm.
“I like to move in silence, but this song is a reminder that people shouldn’t count me out or underestimate my abilities; they should be afraid when I’m quiet as I come back more evolved,” Maidza said in a press release.

When Chloë took the stage at Popsugar Play/Ground on June 2, one word came to mind: confidence. Sporting a sheer bodysuit, a navy blue leather cape, and sky-high platform heels, the multihyphenate flooded the stage with a whole lot of presence, even though she was up there entirely alone. That's right: no backup dancers, musicians, or even a DJ. It was simply Chloë, with nothing but her voice and her talent and her confidence to get the crowd going.
And boy, was the crowd going. Play/Ground attendees had spent the whole day in downtown Los Angeles partaking in celebrity trainer-led workouts, self-care stations, and tasty bites - and now it was all culminating in a special performance and intimate chat with Chloë. Courtney Love has hit out at an anonymous Rock and Roll Hall of Fame voter for admitting they were “unfamiliar” with singing icon Kate Bush’s music.
In a recent Vulture article, journalist Devon Ivie spoke with two unidentified Rock Hall voters who gave their opinions on this year’s 2023 official induction class ballot. The ballot includes the likes of Bush, Missy Elliot and Rage Against the Machine.
When asked if they would vote for the “Running up That Hill” singer, “Voter two” – who’s been an active voter now for “six or seven years” – said: “I’ve got to admit that I’m not too familiar with her music, so I don’t know if I would vote for her. I want to make sure I know the catalogue.”
A few days after the piece was published, Love, the lead vocalist and guitarist of the rock band Hole, responded in outrage.

“Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical,” based on the popular West End show and not the 1996 film with Mara Wilson, doesn’t sing and dance its way to Netflix until Christmastime. But already, one musical number — the foot-stomping anthem “Revolting Children” — has captivated the internet’s attention, much to the surprise of choreographer Ellen Kane.
“I know that dancing is popular on TikTok, but I didn’t really understand quite how popular,” she says from her home in London. But Kane, whose theater credits include “Legally Blonde,” “Billy Elliot” and “Groundhog Day,” is grateful, nonetheless. “It shows you the power of dancers.”
It’s not Matilda (played in the film by Alisha Weir), a young girl with awful parents and a powerfully vivid imagination, who has been commanding the digital limelight. Meesha Garbett doesn’t think she’s a rebel. In all honesty, the 14-year-old isn’t even sure she’d call herself a professional dancer. That is at least, not yet. From the small town of Telford in Shropshire, England, Garbett tells Rolling Stone she’s been dancing since she was three, which has allowed her to pick up choreography easily. That skill has manifested into some major credits for the young actress and dancer, including parts in a George Ezra music video, Jingle Jangle, and the theatrical version of Cats.
