MSNBC is shaking up its weekend schedule as CNN’s Saturday and Sunday offerings continue to provide strong competition.
The NBCUniversal cable-news outlet plans to a launch a new panel show, “The Weekend,” co-moderated by Alicia Menendez, Symone Sanders-Townsend and Michael Steele that will air Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and will cancel a nighttime show anchored by the outspoke Mehdi Hasan. Those move will not only consolidate anchors who had been active on the weekend schedule in their own time slots, but leave room for broad change.
MSNBC’s weekend schedule has long been edged out by CNN among viewers between 25 and 54 — the audience most coveted by advertisers in news programming. CNN launched a new Saturday-morning lineup in November featuring Victor Blackwell,. Chris Wallace and Christiane Amanpour, and paced ahead of MSNBC in both that demographic and total viewers, according to recent data from Nielsen.

As the Israel-Hamas war continues, John Oliver has noticed that some members of the media “seem way too comfortable with” the war. One of the people who caught the “Last Week Tonight” host’s attention was a retired U.S. brigadier-general who advocated for a “war crime” while being interviewed by CNN.
During a segment on the news network, retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Steven Anderson, an analyst who has appeared on CNN multiple times, said that Israel needs to circle Gaza and apply pressure to the region using the blockade they’ve established. “The people are going to suffer,” Anderson said, before noting that the Palestinian people would eventually give up Hamas.
“Does that mean starve the Palestinian people?” an incredulous Victor Blackwell asked on the air. “Because they will be so hungry and so desperate for water and medicine that then they will give up Hamas?”
“It sounds callous,...

CNN’s new streaming product is set to look an awful lot like its familiar cable network.
CNN Max, which debuted Wednesday, has been touted as a way to get news giant’s content out to a increasing number of cord-cutters and consumers who no longer view cable as their primary way to get video entertainment and information. And parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, in the belief, perhaps, that a streaming subscription is just as good as one to a cable or satellite service, is making the bulk of its linear lineup available to the broadband crowd.
The weekday schedule of CNN Max features several new hours led by anchors such as Jim Acosta, Fredricka Whitfield, Rahel Solomon and Jim Scuitto. But a significant chunk of the service is built on CNN’s linear morning, late-afternoon and primetime schedule. When all is said and done, Max viewers will be able...

Though the WGA and AMPTP met on Friday to discuss resuming negotiations, SAG president Fran Drescher says the studios are still “not speaking to us.”
During an appearance on “CNN This Morning” on Monday, Drescher promptly confirmed to hosts Poppy Harlow and Victor Blackwell that there has been no movement on talks resuming between the actors’ guild and the studios, and called out the AMPTP’s most recent statement saying “our only playbook is getting people back to work.”
“They’re not speaking to us,” she said. “So I don’t know what that comment was that they want to seek a deal when you have to be able to negotiate and talk to the opposition to make a deal.”
You can watch Drescher’s full comments in the video below.

CNN said it would shuffle anchors across its weekday and weekend daytime schedules, grouping them together in new ways the network hopes will attract viewers as it attempts to work its way out of a longtime ratings shortfall.
John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner will lead a three-hour mid-morning program from New York that lasts from 9 a.m. to noon, while Brianna Keilar, Boris Sanchez and Jim Sciutto will anchor a three-hour Washington, D.C. broadcast between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. John King will keep his noontime show “Inside Politics” on weekdays.
CNN intends to showcase an energetic “newsroom headquarters” concept that untethers anchors from their desks and tries to show newsgathering and reporting on screen most of the time. CNN, in its latest on-camera lineup moves, has unveiled plans for a new weekday show to run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., to be anchored by John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner out of the New York City studios.
Also on daytime, CNN CEO Chris Licht has unveiled another new stand-alone news program to run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with Brianna Keilar, Boris Sanchez and Jim Sciutto as hosts out of the news channel’s Washington studios. The latest changes follow Licht boarding CNN in May 2022 with a mandate to “reimagine” the 24/7 news channel.
“We are leaning into our greatest strengths, showcasing our unparalleled newsgathering operation and giving our anchors the room to be more authentic. We’ve seen how our audience responds to this format, and we believe it will put us in a position of strength going into the evening and primetime hours,” Licht said in a statement.

CNN unveiled an overhaul of its dayside lineup on Wednesday, with plans for morning and afternoon blocks of programming that will each feature anchor trios while emphasizing more energetic breaking news and event coverage.
The approach, the network indicated, would resemble the network’s special event coverage like election night, with a heavy use of graphics and standing anchors, along with ongoing updates from correspondents in the field. A recent example was the way that the network provided ongoing coverage last week of the House Speaker vote.

Brianna Keilar, Boris Sanchez and Jim Sciutto will anchor from 1 Pm Et-4 Pm Et from Washington. The blocs will be produced in Atlanta. Amara Walker, the CNN correspondent newly assigned to co-anchor weekend mornings, will be represented by CAA.
Walker, who joined CNN in 2012, works alongside co-anchor Boris Sanchez. The two also anchor CNN’s 10 a.m. hour on Saturdays. She is based in CNN’s Atlanta studio, and continues to also serve as a correspondent. The current “New Day” airs Saturdays between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and Sundays between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. CNN has announced plans to relaunch morning programming later this year and the weekend show’s name would, presumably, change as part of that move.
Walker has reported on such events as the 2021 Atlanta spa massacre and co-hosted a primetime special with Anderson Cooper, Victor Blackwell, and Ana Cabrera, called “Afraid: Fear in America’s Communities of Color.” During the 2020 presidential election and the Georgia Senate runoff, Walker was part of an election night team reporting on...

“New Day Weekend” anchor Christi Paul announced on air Sunday that she’s leaving the network after nearly two decades with CNN and Hln.
Paul, who joined the weekend show in 2014, will join another news station in her home state of Ohio. She promised to announce her new position later this week.
As Paul took her “New Day” seat for the last time, she gave viewers the same explanation she says she gave to ex-cnn president Jeff Zucker in January of this year: that the demands of her exhausting schedule kept her away from her family. “I love these people, I love this place, I am so grateful and I am so tired,” she told her co-anchor Boris Sanchez.

A lot of changes are taking place at CNN after the merger of its parent company, WarnerMedia, with Discovery, but this wasn’t one many people were anticipating.

Paul has been with CNN and its sibling Hln since 2003, and has co-anchored “New Day” on Saturday and Sunday mornings alongside Victor Blackwell and, more recently, Boris Sanchez. A rotating group of anchors is expected to fill in on “New Day” alongside Sanchez for the foreseeable future, according to a CNN spokesperson.

As CNN’s many journalists tried to delve into the ouster of Jeff Zucker, but ran up against one of their biggest professional hurdles: a source who refuses to talk.
Some of WarnerMedia’s best-known on-air personalities pressed the company’s CEO Jason Kilar again and again on Monday, asking him to divulge more details around why Zucker resigned after acknowledging a personal relationship with Allison Gollust, CNN’s chief marketing officer. But Kilar would not.
The WarnerMedia chief faced questions from Don Lemon, Alisyn Camerota, Brian Stelter, Jim Sciutto, Bill Weir, Richard Quest, John Avlon and Victor Blackwell, as well as longtime producer Jim Murphy, many of them pressing him for more information about whether the parent company felt Zucker was given a harsher punishment than was necessary; about whether WarnerMedia was negotiating with Chris Cuomo, fired by Zucker last year, over severance; and whether the looming merger of...

WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar continued to be on the receiving end of pushback from CNN staffers on Monday over last week’s unexpected resignation of longtime network president Jeff Zucker.
According to tweets from Washington Post reporter Jeremy Barr citing CNN staffers who attended a staff meeting with Kilar, the WarnerMedia CEO sidestepped pointed questions about why Zucker’s exit was described as a “resignation” when reports suggest that Zucker would face firing if he did not agree.
CNN anchor Victor Blackwell asked if the request for Zucker’s resignation came about due to Zucker and CNN marketing exec Allison Gollust’s previously undisclosed romantic relationship coming to light, according to Barr.
Also at the meeting, Barr reported that CNN’s chief media correspondent Brian Stelter asked Kilar why he wasn’t helping the network’s “4,000 employees move on,” adding, “I kind of think, Jason, you need to pick us...

I often learn about President Trump doing or saying something bigoted before I’ve had a chance shake the cobwebs loose, as my father’s expression goes. Thanks to my phone alerts and my cursed curiosity about the news, I have to swallow some newly reported cruelty before I have brushed my teeth or have had a glass of water. What is old is often still old, often a regurgitated version of some former divisive strategy Trump has employed as far back as his old housing discrimination and Central Park Five ad days.

“Morning Joe” joined the chorus of support for Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings on Monday, calling on Republicans to defend their colleague after President Trump attacked him and his district of Baltimore in a series of tweets.
In a 10-minute segment captioned, “What Donald Trump could learn from Elijah Cummings,” co-host Joe Scarborough labeled the president’s tweet spree a “clumsy attempt to stir racial divisions and appeal to his most bigoted supporters” and urged Republicans to stand up to him.
Where others, like CNN’s Victor Blackwell or the Baltimore Sun editorial board, defended Baltimore as a whole in the wake of Trump’s attack, Scarborough highlighted Cummings’ contributions to his district, citing “empowering minority-owned businesses, working with faith-based leaders, inner-city educators, and helping seniors in need.”

America’s racist-in-chief was at it again on Saturday morning, spewing racism and hate on Twitter. Triggered by House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-md) and Saturday morning’s edition of Fox and Friends, President Donald Trump went on an unhinged rant about the congressman’s city while using blatantly racist terms that, as CNN anchor Victor Blackwell emotionally points out, he reserves for black and brown people and their communities.
….As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded.

CNN anchor Victor Blackwell grew emotional on camera today as he defended his hometown district from President Trump’s characterization of it as “a disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess.”
Blackwell took issue with the use of the word “infested,” saying the people in the district got up and went to work every morning, loved their children, and saluted the flag. He said Trump’s use of the word “infested” to describe the district was a tactic he seems to use only when talking about black and brown people.
Blackwell said he lived in the district from the time he was brought home from the hospital until he left for college. “There are challenges, no doubt. But people are proud of their community.”
Trump on Saturday said via Twitter that Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland) was a “brutal bully” for his cross examination of border patrol officials at committee hearings over conditions at the southern border.

CNN's Victor Blackwell teared up while reporting on President Trump's use of the word "infested" to describe Rep. Elijah Cummings' Maryland district, where the anchor and correspondent is from, on Saturday.
"The president says about Congressman Cummings' district," Blackwell said on New Day Weekend on Saturday as his eyes turned glassy and he bit his lip, "that 'no human' would want to live there. Updated with podium positions: Call it The Rematch. CNN picked the field for the July 30 and 31 Democratic debates tonight, and former Vice President Joe Biden will get another chance to square off against Sen. Kamala Harris of California, this time on Night 2 of Round 2. The duo, who famously clashed during the first debates last month, will stand side by side this time.
As for the two other leading candidates, Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts will face off on Night 1.
In an election cycle that features a remarkable amount of diversity among the candidate, it’s notable that the entire field of the July 30 first debate is made up of white candidates.
The 20 Dems will square off in the cycle’s second pair of 10-person debates in two weeks, and CNN’s unique on-air lottery of sorts determined who will be taking their talents where and when.
